AI does not replace Formula 1 race strategists. F1’s documented machine-learning systems process historical and live data, predict pit windows and tyre effects, flag undercut threats, and compare alternative strategies. Human strategists decide how those forecasts fit the race, communicate a call across the team, and make sure it is executed under pressure. The evidence supports a complementary division of labor—not a proven contest with one universal winner.
What “AI versus human” means in F1 strategy
Formula 1 strategy is a continuous decision process, not a single instruction to pit. Teams collect evidence in practice, plan tyre usage, prepare qualifying runs, monitor the race, and review what happened afterward. Machine-learning models are useful because they can examine very large data streams and repeatedly test “what if?” scenarios. People are essential because the forecast must be interpreted in context, communicated clearly, and deployed at the right moment.
The available official and technical descriptions document model-assisted insights rather than an autonomous system running a team’s live race strategy. They also do not provide a controlled head-to-head study measuring points, wins, or decision accuracy for an AI strategist against a human strategist. Any claim that AI is categorically better, or that a particular victory was “an AI strategy,” goes beyond the evidence.

How an F1 strategy decision is made
A useful way to understand the relationship is as a four-stage loop. The loop can run repeatedly during one lap, and the balance between calculation and judgment changes as the race develops.

1. Collect and interpret evidence
Cars, timing systems and trackside operations generate information about lap time, tyre behavior, fuel use, gaps and traffic. F1 and its technology partners describe combining historical race data with live inputs to produce strategic insights. In a technical account of its Pit Strategy Battle system, AWS described a car with 300 sensors and about 1.1 million data points per second; those figures belong to that circa-2020 account. A separate Formula One announcement on May 14, 2025 referred to more than one million data points per second from F1 cars. They are distinct, dated descriptions rather than one current inventory number.
Models can turn those streams into estimates such as expected lap-time loss in traffic, tyre degradation, the likely pit-window gain, or the risk that a rival’s earlier stop will create an undercut. Strategists still check what the data is saying against driver reports and track conditions.
2. Compare scenarios
Strategy software can evaluate many combinations: pit now or later, use a different tyre compound, cover a rival, or stay out during a changing weather pattern. AWS descriptions of F1 analytics cite timing, race pace, tyre degradation, weather and track conditions as inputs to “what if?” questions. The output is a set of possible outcomes, not a guarantee.

Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →In May 2025, Formula 1 launched a fan-facing “Real-Time Race Track” experience that generated two viable strategies for a circuit designed by a user. It demonstrates how F1 can expose strategy modeling interactively, but it does not show that a named team handed live race control to an autonomous AI.
3. Apply context and choose
A forecast may indicate that an early stop is fast in clean air, while the strategist knows the driver would rejoin behind a slow group or that a safety car is likely. Human experience supplies that missing context. Ruth Buscombe, a Formula One strategist, describes the job as “facilitating the best possible decision making across the course of a race weekend.” She identifies planning, maths and communication as central parts of the work.
4. Deploy and review
Once the team commits, the decision must reach the driver clearly, the pit crew must be ready, and engineers must monitor whether reality matches the forecast. Afterward, teams can ask whether the result came from the process, the model, an assumption about weather, or a communication breakdown. That review improves both the human workflow and future model inputs.
What AI and analytics do best
Processing more data than a person can track
Machine-learning systems can evaluate large historical datasets and high-frequency live telemetry without tiring. Formula 1’s June 29, 2018 partnership announcement with AWS said its data scientists trained models using more than 65 years of historical race data. That is a description of the dataset cited in that 2018 announcement, not a current audit of every record now available.

The practical advantage is breadth: a model can consider many laps, compounds, circuits and traffic states while a strategist focuses on the decisions that need human attention.
Repeating scenario calculations
Algorithms are well suited to running the same calculation across hundreds or thousands of possible pit laps and tyre sequences. They can estimate how an undercut threat changes when the gap is two seconds rather than five, or how a stop loses value if the driver rejoins in traffic. Repetition also makes it easier to expose assumptions and compare a baseline plan with alternatives.
Surfacing strategic signals
F1’s documented analytics examples include predicted pit timing, undercut-risk analysis and alternative-strategy comparisons. Broadcast-facing F1 Insights has also been designed to help explain split-second decisions to viewers. These outputs are most useful as alerts and decision support: they direct attention to a developing threat or opportunity that a strategist can investigate.
Updating as conditions change
As lap times, tyre wear, weather and track temperature move away from expectations, a model can recalculate quickly. That speed helps the pit wall avoid relying on a plan created before the start. It does not remove the need to validate the inputs; a sudden yellow flag, a damaged front wing or an unexpected rain cell can make a mathematically attractive option impractical.
What human strategists do best
Planning the whole race weekend
Strategy begins before the lights go out. Buscombe’s description includes deciding what data to collect in practice, using tyres efficiently, planning qualifying runs and preparing for the race. A model can optimize a defined question, but people decide which questions the weekend requires and how to gather the evidence to answer them.
Combining formal data with experience
Human instinct in F1 is not a mysterious alternative to analysis. Buscombe characterizes it as a summation of experience: recognizing when a familiar pattern is emerging, noticing that a forecast conflicts with driver feedback, or understanding how a particular circuit tends to evolve. Experience helps a strategist judge whether a model’s assumptions still match the track.
Communicating one actionable plan
Multiple departments may see the same data differently. The strategist has to turn probabilities and alternatives into a concise message: stay out, box this lap, cover the rival, or prepare for a weather change. Buscombe says, “Communication is everything. When everybody asks me what strategy I say, it’s 50 percent maths and it’s 50 percent communication and we spend hours and hours and hours working as a team.” Her “50 percent” wording is a practitioner’s characterization, not a measured statistical split.

Coordinating execution under pressure
A correct forecast is useless if the driver receives it too late, the pit crew is not prepared, or the car rejoins into an avoidable queue. Human strategists coordinate with race engineers, tyre specialists, weather analysts and the driver, then adapt the call when a rival or race-control decision changes the situation.

Buscombe states: “There is still a human in the loop, which is one of the things that makes sport glorious, there are actually quite a lot of humans in the loop.” The statement captures the documented boundary: analytics can inform a choice, while people retain responsibility for interpretation and action.
How does an F1 team decide when to pit?
There is no universal lap number. The team weighs the time gained on fresh tyres against pit-lane loss, traffic, tyre degradation, gaps to rivals, weather and the chance of a safety car. The decision is a moving comparison between staying out and stopping now.
Signals that an early stop may work
- The driver is losing lap time as the current tyres degrade.
- A rival is close enough that an earlier stop could create an undercut.
- Fresh tyres would provide a large pace advantage in clear air.
- The expected rejoin position is safe from slower traffic.
- Weather or a race-control event makes track position unusually valuable.
Signals that staying out may work
- The driver’s tyres remain consistent and the car is running in clean air.
- A rival’s new tyres will be slow to warm up or will encounter traffic.
- Extra laps could create a useful gap before a stop or enable a different compound sequence.
- There is a credible chance of a safety car that would reduce the pit-lane time penalty.
- The alternative stop would rejoin behind cars that cannot be passed quickly.
Models can quantify these trade-offs, but strategists must decide which assumptions are credible. A predicted gain is not the same as a guaranteed pass, and a later stop is not automatically an overcut win.
Undercut versus overcut: the strategic example
What is an undercut?
An undercut is a move in which the chasing driver pits earlier, receives fresh tyres and uses the immediate pace advantage to gain time before the rival stops. If the time gained is greater than the pit-lane loss and the rival’s eventual out-lap, the chaser can emerge ahead after the rival’s stop.

What is an overcut?
An overcut keeps the chasing driver on the older tyres for longer while the rival stops. It can work when the staying-out car has strong pace, clear air, or a tyre advantage, or when the rival loses time warming new tyres or rejoining traffic.
Why neither move is always best
F1 notes that the undercut is more powerful at some circuits than others. The deciding variables include pit-lane length, tyre warm-up, degradation, traffic, overtaking difficulty and how quickly the track evolves. At a circuit where a stop is relatively cheap and new tyres provide an immediate gain, an undercut may be potent. Where fresh tyres take time to work or the rejoin is congested, staying out can be better.

Analytics can run both options repeatedly with current gaps and tyre estimates. The strategist supplies the circuit knowledge, driver feedback and risk tolerance that determine whether the modeled gain is realistic.
How do strategists practice before a race?
Practice is not only about finding a qualifying setup. Strategists use sessions to collect evidence about tyre life, pace differences, traffic and the behavior of the circuit as rubber builds on the surface. They plan which runs will answer those questions while preserving tyres and complying with the weekend’s allocation.
Questions practice data should answer
- How quickly does each available tyre compound lose performance?
- How long does a new tyre take to reach useful operating temperature?
- What is the pace difference between a clear lap and a lap in traffic?
- How much time does the pit lane cost under current conditions?
- Do simulations agree with driver comments about balance and grip?
Those observations feed qualifying plans and race simulations. The human team decides which data is reliable enough to change the plan and which result may have been caused by traffic, weather or an unusual run.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. When should a driver change tyres?
The answer depends on the race objective, not simply on how many laps a tyre has completed. A stop is attractive when the expected time gained on the new compound exceeds the pit-lane loss and the risks of traffic, a slow stop or an unfavorable rejoin.
Dry-race considerations
Teams compare degradation curves, tyre warm-up, remaining race distance and the legal requirement to use the required dry compounds when applicable. A driver may stop before the tyre is fully worn if protecting track position or covering a rival matters more than maximizing the final laps of that set.
Changing weather
Weather creates a different calculation because the value of a tyre can change within a lap. A model can compare forecasts and lap-time scenarios, but the team must judge radar reliability, the driver’s position on track and whether conditions justify accepting an extra pit stop.
Safety cars and neutralizations
A safety car can reduce the relative cost of pitting and bunch the field. Strategists therefore recalculate rather than follow a pre-race schedule. The decision still depends on the driver’s position, available tyres and the expected restart.

Does AI make F1 race-strategy decisions?
Official material supports a narrower answer: AI and analytics generate insights, predictions and scenario comparisons that assist the strategy process. The cited sources do not establish that an AI system independently authorizes and executes a team’s live race calls or replaces its strategists.
F1’s public “Real-Time Race Track” experience, announced May 14, 2025, is explicitly a fan-facing demonstration that creates strategies for custom circuits. Jonny Haworth, Formula 1’s Director of Commercial Partnerships, said: “Our ongoing partnership with AWS continues to evolve and transform how fans interact with Formula 1. The ‘Real-Time Race Track’ experience exemplifies how we’re using cloud technology and AI to bring fans closer to the sport than ever before.” That statement describes fan interaction, not autonomous team control.
The distinction matters. A recommendation engine can rank options, while a race strategist decides whether the assumptions fit the live race, communicates the call and accepts responsibility for deploying it.

Where AI can fail—and where humans can fail
Model and data failure modes
- Bad inputs: A faulty sensor, delayed timing feed or incorrect tyre assumption can produce a confident but wrong output.
- Unusual events: A red flag, debris, sudden rain or an unexpected safety-car period can invalidate scenarios built from normal racing.
- Historical bias: Past races may not represent a new tyre construction, regulation, circuit surface or weather pattern.
- False precision: A numerical probability can look exact even when several inputs are uncertain.
Human and operational failure modes
- Slow interpretation: A team may recognize the right option but communicate it too late.
- Conflicting instructions: Several departments can send the driver different messages.
- Anchoring: People may cling to a pre-race plan after conditions change.
- Execution error: A correct strategy can lose time through a delayed call, pit-lane issue or poor traffic judgment.
The review stage should identify which category caused the outcome instead of labeling every miss as either “AI failure” or “human error.”
What the evidence can—and cannot—prove
The documented examples establish capabilities: historical and live-data processing, pit-timing predictions, undercut-threat analysis, alternative-strategy simulations and fan-facing strategy visualizations. They do not establish a numerical superiority score for either humans or machines.
There is no cited independent head-to-head study reporting that AI strategists score more points, win more races or make fewer errors than human strategists. A team’s result is also affected by car performance, tyre availability, pit execution, reliability, penalties, traffic and race control. Without a controlled comparison, attributing a result to “AI” alone would be misleading.
A practical decision framework for readers analyzing a race
When a broadcast shows a strategy graphic or an unexpected pit call, use this sequence to understand it without assuming the graphic is an instruction from an autonomous system.
- Identify the objective. Is the team trying to pass a rival, protect track position, reach the finish, or react to weather?
- Check tyre state. Compare compound, age, degradation and warm-up rather than treating “fresh” as automatically faster.
- Estimate the pit-lane cost. A stop only helps if the expected pace gain can repay the time lost and the likely traffic.
- Look at the gap and rejoin. Determine whether the driver will emerge in clear air, behind a rival or inside a train of cars.
- Consider the circuit. Overtaking difficulty, pit-lane length and track evolution change the value of an undercut or overcut.
- Account for uncertainty. Weather, safety cars and model assumptions can alter the ranking of options within a lap.
- Separate recommendation from action. A prediction or broadcast graphic shows an analysis; the team’s people still interpret, communicate and execute the call.
Bottom line: complementarity is the defensible answer
Machines are strongest at scale, speed and repeated scenario testing. Human strategists are strongest at context, experience, communication, coordination and accountable execution. Formula 1’s published examples show those capabilities working together, not an AI system replacing the pit wall. Until a controlled study measures outcomes under comparable conditions, “AI versus human” is the wrong scorecard: the practical question is how well the team connects the model’s forecast to a human decision that can actually be carried out.
