Scrabble engines can challenge the strongest human players, but the available results do not show that they reliably beat the best players across full games. One striking comparison—Nigel Richards’ 1.2% endgame error rate against an AI’s 4.9%—covers tracked endgames, not full-game wins. A separate 500-game match between Quackle and grandmaster Kenji Matsumoto was nearly even: Quackle won 248 games and Matsumoto 252.
What does “AI can’t always beat the best” mean?
It means strong Scrabble engines are competitive without being proven consistent winners against elite humans in full-game play. It does not mean computers never win, or that humans always outperform them. The figures available measure different things—endgame move errors, results in one long match, and estimated win rates—so they should not be treated as one controlled head-to-head test.
In a 2026 article, Andy Boxall attributes endgame figures to World English-Language Scrabble Players Association (WESPA) data shown in a video: Nigel Richards had a cumulative 1.2% error rate in tracked endgames, compared with 4.9% for the top AI on those same games. The year of the underlying data is not specified, and the dataset is not exposed in the article. These percentages describe endgame errors, not the probability of winning a full game. Boxall’s account of the comparison is therefore best read as a specific, attributed result rather than a universal ranking of humans and machines.
How did an AI do over 500 games?
A longer match gives a different kind of evidence. In a 500-game series against Scrabble grandmaster Kenji Matsumoto, Quackle won 248 games and Matsumoto won 252. César del Solar, a Scrabble AI developer, described that result in 2022. It shows a close contest over a substantial sample, not a decisive machine advantage or proof that humans are generally stronger.

Matsumoto argued that engines’ ability to find strong words was not the same as strategic mastery. He wrote: “I have no doubt that some day Scrabble computers will achieve superhuman strength. But as of now, computers in Scrabble are far from reaching the levels of excellence that they have reached in other games, and their only ability to compete is based on their ability to consistently play-find.” His comment is an assessment from 2022, not a claim that engines cannot improve. Del Solar’s account of the match and Matsumoto’s view provides the context.
Why strong word-finding does not settle the game
Choosing a legal, high-scoring word is only one part of a strong Scrabble move. An engine also has to judge what its play leaves on its rack, how it shapes the board, what tiles the opponent may hold, and how volatile the position will become. A move with the highest immediate score may not be the best strategic choice.

Early and middle play
BestBot developer César del Solar describes using Monte Carlo simulations to look ahead during early and middle play, alongside tile-leave values. These methods estimate likely outcomes, but depend on evaluating uncertain future positions and opponent possibilities.

Endgames
When the bag is empty and both racks are known, the remaining game becomes one of perfect information, making exhaustive search more tractable in principle. Del Solar says an engine can still sometimes run out of its allotted evaluation time on complex endings. So even a phase with less hidden information can present difficult computational choices.

Del Solar’s broader point is that Scrabble involves “board shape considerations, inferences, volatility, etc.” that current engines do not fully account for. His technical explanation of BestBot’s algorithms describes how engine methods address parts of the problem while leaving strategic judgment challenging.
Why published win-rate estimates do not agree
Several additional percentages appear in the 2026 account: Richards’ estimated lifetime win rate is reported as 75%, WESPA players’ average as 50%, Quackle’s approximate win rate as 50–55%, and BestBot’s as about 60%. Those are reported estimates with no common comparison protocol established in the account. They are not interchangeable with the 1.2% and 4.9% endgame error rates, or with the 248–252 result from the Matsumoto series.

Del Solar’s 2025 developer account estimates that the best engines are near 50% against the best human players. It also describes a long-running series in which 2024 North American champion Mack Meller was winning 40–42% against BestBot at the time of publication. These are developer-reported figures, not independent controlled evaluations; the match context and engine version matter when interpreting them. Del Solar’s 2025 account supplies that qualification.
What the evidence supports—and what it does not
The results support a restrained conclusion: top engines can compete with elite humans, while the cited evidence does not establish that they reliably dominate them across full games. To compare future claims fairly, check whether a figure measures win rate or move errors, which phase of play it covers, how many games were played, who the human opponents were, and which engine and lexicon were used.

These results also do not prove a general theorem that people are better at Scrabble. They show particular contests and attributed estimates, with different methods and limitations. Del Solar’s 2022 essay calls Scrabble far from solved, but an unsolved game is not, by itself, evidence that human players outperform machines.
