A match cut’s quality depends on whether the outgoing and incoming frames create the intended visual connection—not just whether a prompt describes the action. A controlled comparison of four video models requires their actual outputs, prompts, versions, and settings; without those records, no model winner or measured cut offset can be stated. You can still use a repeatable workflow to create and inspect a zombie transformation cut, then distinguish the model’s timing from any trimming done in an editor.
What makes an AI video match cut work?
A match cut connects two shots through a visual feature such as subject position, framing, movement, lighting, or shape. For a zombie transformation, that might mean the person’s face stays in roughly the same place as the appearance changes, or that a movement continues across the edit. The transformation itself can happen before, on, or after the intended cut; the edit point is where you decide whether the two shots read as one visual transition.
Prompting for a sequence is not the same as delivering a finished, frame-accurate edit. A model may follow the requested order while placing an event at a different moment than you intended. Judge the generated output and the final edited cut separately.

Can you control a video’s first and last frames?
Some generation workflows accept image frames as constraints. Google’s Veo 3.1 API documentation says the model supports video generation using interpolation or specified first and last frames; the last frame is supplied alongside the initial image as a generation constraint. This describes a documented Veo 3.1 capability, not a guarantee that a resulting transition will be frame-perfect. Check the exact model version: Google’s reference for the Veo 3.0 model ID does not list first-and-last-frame generation as supported. In an image-to-video workflow, Runway’s official guide describes the input image as the first frame, providing composition, subject, lighting, and style. It recommends expressing event order in natural language or rough timestamps and making sure the sequence fits the selected clip duration. For a longer sequence, its guide suggests extracting the last frame and using it as the next image input. It also says generated clips can be combined in an editor and the shared frame removed to adjust timing. These are workflow suggestions, not results from a comparative test. How to create and inspect the cut
- Define the visual match. Choose what should carry across the edit: for example, the zombie’s face position, head turn, or camera framing. Decide when the transformation should occur relative to the cut.
- Set up the generation. Record the exact model and version, access method, prompt, any start or end image, aspect ratio, resolution, frame rate, and duration. If you use timing language or rough timestamps, make the events fit the chosen duration.
- Save the untouched output. Keep the model-generated clip separate from any version you trim or stitch. This preserves evidence of where the model placed the action.
- Inspect at normal speed first. Watch the whole transition at its intended playback speed. Note whether the subject, composition, lighting, and direction of movement connect clearly.
- Step through the edit point. In an editor’s frame-by-frame or Trim mode, inspect the outgoing and incoming frames around the cut. Adobe Premiere’s Trim mode shows both sides of an edit and includes one-frame trim controls, which can help identify whether the match is clearest just before or after the current edit point. - Make a separate edit-only version if needed. Record the trim in frames or timecode, then compare the adjusted cut with the unedited output. Attribute the changed timing to the edit, not to the model.
How many frames should you trim?
There is no universal frame offset for a match cut. Trim only after inspecting the actual outgoing and incoming images: a one-frame change can alter the apparent timing, but the right choice depends on the specific footage and intended visual connection. Record the edit point using timecode that includes the frame field, and state whether you are reporting the native output or a manually adjusted version.

Keep frame-rate interpretation separate from trimming. Adobe notes that changing a clip’s interpreted frame rate changes its playback duration: its example turns a 10-second clip recorded at 24 fps into a 5-second playback when interpreted at 48 fps. That is a timing transformation in post-production, not a model-generated improvement. Adobe’s frame-rate guidance explains the distinction.

A useful comparison needs the four saved outputs and their test records. Use the same intended scene and comparison method, but report each system’s actual settings rather than implying that every model used identical controls or produced identical native formats.

- Identify the system: exact model/version and whether it was accessed through an app or API.
- Record the inputs: prompt, start image, end-image method, and any reference images.
- Record output settings: aspect ratio, resolution, frame rate, and duration, including differences between systems.
- Judge the cut: endpoint control, subject and composition continuity, event timing, and the quality of the edit point when viewed frame by frame.
- Track editing effort: note prompting, regenerations, stitching, and manual trimming. Report counts or time only when you recorded them.
- Label normalization: if you resize, change playback rate, or trim clips for a side-by-side, identify those changes and keep native outputs available for reference.
For context, Google’s Veo 3.1 API documentation lists an output rate of 24 fps and duration options of 4, 6, or 8 seconds depending on variant and configuration; it also describes constraints that vary with resolution and other settings. Those specifications should not be generalized to other models or treated as the settings used in a particular test. Google’s documentation provides the current configuration details.

Without the four original clips, prompts, versions, and generation logs, there is no basis to name a winner, claim a measured frame offset, or report which system performed best. Product documentation can establish that a workflow or control exists; it cannot establish how a specific zombie match cut performed. A defensible comparison must show the native outputs, disclose any edit adjustments, and connect each conclusion to the frames being judged.
