For a tutorial that must show a product accurately, start with a real screen recording. It captures the interface and actions your audience needs to follow. AI video automation is usually most valuable around that recording: it can help draft or refine narration, generate a synthetic voice, add visual emphasis, and, in some workflows, turn one capture into both a video and a written guide. An avatar-led or fully generated video is better suited to a high-level explanation than to proving exactly where a user should click.
There is no independently tested winner for speed, quality, accuracy, or cost. The right choice depends on whether your priority is interface fidelity, hands-on control, repeatable production, or additional outputs.
What the two approaches mean
Direct screen recording
A screen recording captures a person operating the product’s real interface. You may record microphone audio at the same time or add narration later, then trim the footage and publish it as a tutorial. A screen recorder therefore preserves the exact product state, including the labels, menus, permissions, and results visible during the take.

AI-assisted, recording-first video
In a recording-first workflow, the real interface remains the source material while AI handles selected production tasks. Tutorial AI documents a process in which a creator records first, generates or refines a script, adds an AI voice, applies smart zoom and cursor effects, and then reviews and edits the result in Video Basics.
This distinction matters. Automation can polish a genuine capture, but it does not make an inaccurate capture accurate. If the original recording uses an old menu, a test account, or the wrong sequence, the polished version can still teach the wrong thing.
Avatar-led or generated product video
Some product-video systems begin with a script, uploaded help material, a screen recording, or a presenter avatar instead of requiring a continuous recording of the real workflow. Synthesia describes product videos that can use avatars, screen recordings, or uploaded help content on its AI Video Platform for Product Videos page.

Which is better on the criteria that matter?
“Better” changes with the job. Use this comparison before choosing a production method.
| Criterion | Direct screen recording | AI-assisted tutorial workflow |
|---|---|---|
| Interface fidelity | Shows the real product state and the actions taken during the capture. | A recording-first process can retain the real capture while automating narration and visual polish. A generated or avatar-led video requires a separate accuracy check. |
| Creator control | You choose the take, wording, timing, cursor movement, and every cut. | AI can create a draft or effects, but the documented workflows include review and editing. Keep a human approval step. |
| Production steps | Capture, narration, editing, and publishing are handled directly by the creator or editor. | Script work, voice generation, effects, and some editing can be combined around one recording. |
| Voice | Use live microphone narration or record a voiceover separately. | A system may generate speech from a script. Pronunciation, product terminology, pacing, and tone still need checking. |
| Visual emphasis | Apply zooms, cursor highlights, and cuts manually in the editor you use. | Some tools offer automated zoom and cursor effects, followed by manual adjustment. |
| Additional outputs | Usually produces a video; a written guide must be created separately. | Tutorial AI says it can create a written article with screenshots from the same recording, as described in its Introduction. |
| Best fit | Short, simple walkthroughs; precise live explanations; or teams that want complete manual control. | Repeated tutorials, support teams that need a repeatable process, or projects that benefit from narration, effects, and documentation. |
| Independent performance evidence | No independent head-to-head figures for production time, factual accuracy, quality, or total cost are established by the cited materials. | |
Choose the format by tutorial objective
When the viewer must reproduce exact clicks
Use a real screen recording as the factual backbone. Record the current production interface, not a mock-up, and keep the sequence aligned with the task the viewer is trying to complete. AI can help draft narration or emphasize the cursor, but compare the finished cut with the live product before publishing.
When the walkthrough is short and simple
Direct recording is often the most economical in attention and control. For a three- or four-step task, an intentional take, a few clean cuts, and a clear explanation may be easier than configuring an automation pipeline. This is a fit judgment, not a measured claim that manual production is always faster.

When you maintain a library of onboarding or support lessons
Consider a recording-first AI workflow if you repeatedly need scripts, narration, visual emphasis, or a companion article. Tutorial AI states that one recording can produce both a video tutorial and step-by-step documentation with screenshots in its Quickstart. Treat that as a documented capability; the source does not quantify the labor saved or the accuracy of the generated article.

When the goal is an overview rather than a click-by-click lesson
An avatar-led or generated video can introduce a product, explain a use case, or orient a new audience before they open the software. Keep the boundary explicit: an overview is not a substitute for demonstrating the current interface when the viewer needs operational instructions.
How to make a dependable direct screen recording
A manual workflow is straightforward, but the preparation determines whether viewers can follow it.
- Define one outcome. Write the task in a single sentence, such as “Create a project and invite a teammate.” Remove adjacent features that do not help achieve that outcome.
- Prepare a clean account and workspace. Use representative data, hide personal information, and set the window to a readable size. Check that the account has the permissions the viewer is expected to have.
- Rehearse the path without recording. Note exact menu names, confirmation dialogs, loading states, and any branch caused by account settings. A rehearsal prevents narration from promising a control that does not appear.
- Choose your audio method. Speak during the capture if your explanation depends on timing, or record silently and add a voiceover later. A microphone is optional; silent capture and later narration are both documented workflows.
- Record deliberate actions. Pause briefly after opening a menu, move the pointer purposefully, and allow pages to finish loading. Avoid clicking repeatedly while you search for the next control.
- Review the full take before editing. Confirm that no notification, password, customer record, or unrelated tab appears. Check that every state change needed for the task is visible.
- Edit for comprehension. Remove dead time and mistakes, but retain enough context for the viewer to know where the action occurs. Add your chosen callouts, zooms, or captions in the editor you control.
- Verify against the live product. Follow your own finished video in a fresh session. Correct any changed label, permission requirement, or result before publishing.
How a recording-first AI workflow works
Tutorial AI’s documentation provides a concrete example of this pattern. The following sequence combines its described steps with the review decisions a product team still has to make.
- Plan a narrow recording. Tutorial AI’s quickstart recommends keeping recordings under 10 minutes for best results. That is the vendor’s workflow guidance, not a universal limit; split a longer lesson when separate chapters will be easier to maintain.
- Clean the recording environment. Close unnecessary tabs, mute notifications, and click deliberately so the recorder can track actions, as advised in the Quickstart.
- Record silently or speak while capturing. Silent capture lets you add narration later. Speaking during the recording gives the system audio and wording to refine. HeyGen also documents screen and microphone capture in its screen-recorder workflow.
- Generate or refine the script. Treat the first draft as an editable starting point. Compare each sentence with what is visibly happening; remove claims about features, plans, or outcomes that the recording does not demonstrate.
- Choose the voice deliberately. A synthetic voice can read the approved script, but listen for pronunciation of product names, acronyms, file formats, and commands. Adjust wording rather than expecting the voice model to infer specialist terminology.
- Apply automated emphasis. Smart zoom and cursor effects can direct attention to a control. Inspect every effect: an automatic zoom that lands on the wrong panel is more distracting than no zoom.
- Review the edit. Tutorial AI describes editing the script, adjusting effects, adding slides, and cutting or combining clips in its Video Basics documentation. Use that review to fix timing, remove irrelevant pauses, and restore context lost by aggressive cuts.
- Preview the complete lesson. Watch once as an editor for pacing and once as a first-time user for clarity. Confirm that the voice, cursor, and visible interface agree at every step.
- Export or embed. The quickstart describes previewing visual styling and exporting an MP4 or embedding the result. Select the delivery method that matches your help center, learning platform, or release process.
- Generate the written companion when useful. Tutorial AI says it can create an article with screenshots from the same recording. Check every generated step and screenshot after UI changes; a shared capture does not guarantee that the written version remains correct.
Where avatar and generated scenes help—and where they do not
Good uses
- Introducing a product to people who do not yet need operational detail.
- Explaining a concept, workflow, or business outcome before showing the interface.
- Localizing a presenter-led explanation when a consistent synthetic presenter is part of the communication plan.
- Combining supplied help material and selected screen clips into a high-level product story.
Risky uses
- Showing a generated interface as if it were a verified current screen.
- Teaching a sequence where a missing permission, dialog, or loading state changes the result.
- Using an avatar to conceal uncertainty about a feature that has changed since the script was written.
If a generated scene includes UI, compare it with the live product and label the video’s scope. A polished presenter cannot compensate for a wrong button name or an invented workflow.

Quality control before publishing
Automation changes who performs the first draft; it does not remove the publisher’s responsibility for correctness.
- Interface check: Every visible control, label, icon, and result exists in the product version and account state you name.
- Sequence check: The clicks occur in an order a new user can reproduce, including waits for loading and any required confirmation.
- Script check: Narration describes what is on screen rather than adding unsupported promises about speed, availability, pricing, or permissions.
- Audio check: Names, acronyms, keyboard shortcuts, and technical terms are pronounced correctly and remain understandable over interface sounds.
- Visual check: Zooms, cursor effects, overlays, and slides point to the intended control and do not hide essential context.
- Privacy check: Remove credentials, personal data, customer information, internal URLs, notifications, and unrelated browser tabs.
- Documentation check: If a written article is generated from the capture, follow its screenshots and steps independently. Update both assets when the UI changes.
- Change-management check: Record the product version or release date internally so the team knows when to re-record. Do not leave a “current” claim unqualified when the interface is likely to change.
Equipment, software, and cost expectations
You do not need a special microphone to make a tutorial. A creator can capture silently and add synthetic narration later, or record microphone audio during the screen capture. If you choose live narration, a microphone that produces clean speech may improve the result, but no particular model is established by the cited materials.
Current prices, plan limits, accessibility outcomes, security terms, and program eligibility are not established in the vendor pages cited here. Check those details directly for the edition and region you intend to use instead of assuming that a documented feature is included in every plan.
Likewise, do not promise a fixed production-time or cost reduction from AI. The available materials describe capabilities and workflows, not an independent benchmark against manual editing.

A practical decision framework
Use the following order when selecting a method for a new tutorial:
- Does the viewer need to see the real interface? If yes, make a verified screen recording the foundation.
- Is the lesson short and unlikely to be repeated? If yes, direct recording and manual editing may be the clearest path.
- Will the team produce many similar lessons? If yes, evaluate whether script drafting, synthetic narration, automated effects, or a shared documentation output justify a recording-first AI workflow.
- Is the video primarily conceptual? If yes, an avatar-led or generated format may work, provided it is not presented as a live UI demonstration.
- What must be maintained when the product changes? Keep the source recording, approved script, and written steps together so the team can identify every asset that needs re-recording or review.
In practice, many teams will use a hybrid: record the real workflow, use AI for a first script and visual polish, then have a product-aware editor approve the final video and any generated documentation. That preserves the evidence a tutorial needs while reserving automation for the repetitive production work it can actually perform.
Bottom line for product-tutorial creators
Choose screen recording when factual interface accuracy and control are the deciding factors. Choose recording-first AI when you already need a real capture but want help with narration, effects, editing, or a companion guide. Choose an avatar-led or generated video for explanation and orientation, not as proof of detailed product behavior. In every case, verify the finished lesson against the live product before users rely on it.
