Short answer: Khanmigo is the strongest broad-subject starting point if you are willing to work within Khan Academy’s lessons and exercises. Siko is the closest match to a literal “no-upload” tutor because it reads the assignment already open on your screen. Photomath is useful when the question is a single math problem, while a live human tutor remains the most flexible option for a professor’s private slides or unusual course requirements.
“No upload” does not always mean “no context.” Khanmigo avoids course-file ingestion by teaching from an existing curriculum. Siko avoids a file-import step by analyzing screenshots of your active screen. The right choice depends on whether you need curriculum-based coaching, help with the exact page you are viewing, or an explanation tailored to material that is not in a public library.

What “no-upload AI tutor” actually means
There are two different workflows hidden behind the phrase “AI tutor without uploading my course materials.” Understanding the difference prevents an unpleasant surprise about what the tutor can see and what it can teach.

Curriculum-based tutoring
A curriculum-based tutor uses lessons, exercises, videos and articles that are already in its own educational library. You do not import your lecture slides or course PDFs, but the tutor is most reliable when your question matches that library. Khanmigo follows this model through Khan Academy’s content, with coverage that includes math, humanities, coding and social studies.

This approach is convenient and usually easier to supervise: the tutor can guide you through a known concept, ask questions in sequence and point to related practice. The trade-off is that it may not know the exact notation, terminology, reading list or grading rubric used by your instructor.
On-screen tutoring
An on-screen tutor looks at the assignment, equation or passage currently displayed in another app. You do not create a course knowledge base or attach a packet of files. Instead, the tutor receives enough visual context to discuss what is in front of you. Siko describes this as sitting “on top of whatever the student is already doing” and using Socratic questions while the student continues in the original app.
This can match a worksheet or web page more closely than a fixed curriculum, but the privacy question changes: the service may still transmit a screenshot for analysis even though you never clicked an upload button.

Why “no context” is not realistic
A tutor cannot explain a problem it cannot identify. If your professor’s private slide deck contains a definition that differs from the standard one, a no-upload service may need at least a short quotation, a typed equation or a live explanation from you. For sensitive or restricted material, use a school-approved system or a human tutor and share only the minimum necessary context.

Khanmigo: the broad-subject starting point
Khanmigo is the most practical first choice when your classes overlap with Khan Academy’s curriculum. Khan Academy says it “doesn’t just give answers. Instead, with limitless patience, it guides learners to find the answer themselves.” In practice, that means the tutor is designed to ask leading questions, prompt you to show your reasoning and help you correct a step rather than simply returning a completed solution.
What it can cover
The integrated content library spans math, humanities, coding and social studies. That breadth makes Khanmigo more suitable than a math-only app when you are switching between algebra, history, writing or programming. Its usefulness still depends on whether the relevant topic and level are represented in the available Khan Academy material.
How to use it without uploading slides
- Open the Khan Academy lesson, exercise, video or article that is closest to the concept you are studying.
- Start Khanmigo from within that learning environment and state the specific step that is confusing you.
- Show your attempted reasoning. For a calculation, type the expression and your intermediate work; for an essay or reading, summarize the passage and identify the sentence you cannot interpret.
- Ask for a hint, a question that checks your understanding or a simpler example instead of requesting a finished submission.
- Complete the next step yourself, then ask the tutor to check the reasoning and explain any error.
This workflow avoids importing a private course archive, but it does not make Khanmigo a universal reader of every assignment. If your instructor uses a specialized textbook, a proprietary lab manual or a definition that is absent from Khan Academy, describe the discrepancy explicitly and verify the explanation against your class materials.
Access, age and price
Khan Academy’s current learner page lists $4 per month or $44 for an annual plan for parents and learners. The same page states that parent or learner access requires the account holder to be 18 or older, live in the United States and have a U.S. billing address. A minor therefore needs a parent or guardian to sign up and manage access. These conditions are not a universal promise of availability outside the United States.
Privacy and supervision
Khan Academy’s community guidance advises users not to share private photos or personal details and says images are not stored. Its safety information says children’s chat history and activities can be visible to connected parents or guardians and, where applicable, teachers or school administrators. That visibility can be useful for supervision, but it is important to understand before a child discusses a sensitive assignment or personal situation.
Khan Academy also warns that the AI can occasionally provide incorrect information and should not replace teacher instruction or parental guidance. Treat a confident explanation as a starting point: check calculations, quotations, code output and historical claims against the lesson or your instructor’s materials.

Siko: the closest match to a literal no-upload workflow
Siko is designed for students who want help with the exact page, equation or passage already open on their computer. Its official description says there is “no main window, no upload step, no separate app to learn.” The tutor appears over the active application and uses escalating Socratic hints and a walkthrough while you continue working in the original program.
Supported on-screen situations
Siko says it works with Pages, Word, Google Docs, PDFs viewed in Preview, Notability, GoodNotes, Khan Academy, IXL, browsers and other on-screen passages or equations. That list is useful because it describes the workflow rather than requiring you to move content into a special editor.
Typical workflow
- Open the assignment in the application you normally use.
- Place the cursor or selection near the sentence, equation or step you want to understand.
- Invoke Siko’s overlay and let it inspect the visible context.
- Read the first hint and attempt the next step yourself.
- Request a stronger hint or the walkthrough only after you have tried the earlier prompt.
- Keep the finished reasoning in the original document and verify it against the assignment instructions.
This is a better fit than a curriculum-only tutor when the question depends on the exact wording or layout of a worksheet. It is not equivalent to offline processing. Siko says screenshots are sent to an AI model for analysis, so an internet connection is required.
What Siko says about data
Siko states that it does not store screenshots on its servers, pool data across users, sell or share data, train a model on the learner’s work or create a profile of the learner. At the same time, the service says screenshots are transmitted to the AI model during analysis. Those statements address different stages of handling: temporary transmission for an answer is not the same as retaining a screenshot on Siko’s own servers.
Before using an on-screen tutor with a school account, check your institution’s policy. Hide names, student IDs, grades, medical information and other unrelated content before invoking screen analysis.

Siko’s site currently directs prospective users to a waitlist or early-access path. The site does not state pricing publicly; pricing details are supplied with an invitation. Do not assume that joining the list guarantees immediate access or that a price seen in an older discussion still applies.
Photomath: a focused option for individual math questions
Photomath is a narrower alternative for a learner who mainly needs help with one math problem at a time. Its official site identifies it as a math-help app, and its camera or app workflow means you can work from a problem without importing an entire course pack.
When it makes sense
- You need to understand the steps for a single equation or calculation.
- Your main requirement is math rather than writing, history, coding or mixed-subject study.
- You prefer a dedicated problem-solving interface instead of a tutor embedded in a course library or desktop document.
What is not established
Photomath’s official site does not state current plan names, usage limits, privacy controls or the exact range of supported problem types. Confirm those details in the app or its current documentation before relying on it for a class with specialized notation. It should not be treated as a substitute for a broad tutor when you need explanations across several subjects.
When a live human tutor is the better no-file option
A human tutor can work without receiving your complete course archive. You can explain the assignment verbally, type the relevant equation or share only the paragraph that needs clarification. This is often the safest route when the instructor’s private materials, grading rubric or lab procedure is central to the question.
Advantages
- The tutor can ask follow-up questions about your class, prior lessons and instructor expectations.
- You can negotiate exactly what is shared instead of granting an application broad screen access.
- A human can notice confusion, language barriers or gaps in prerequisite knowledge that an automated system misses.
Trade-offs
Availability, scheduling, price, geography and tutor quality vary. A human tutor also cannot guarantee that their explanation matches your professor’s preferred method, so bring the assignment instructions and ask them to distinguish a general solution from the method required in class.

Privacy checklist before using any AI tutor
Use this checklist regardless of which option you select:
- Remove student names, IDs, email addresses, grades and contact information from the visible page.
- Do not include medical, financial, disciplinary or accommodation records unless your institution explicitly authorizes the service.
- Check whether a parent, teacher or school administrator can view the account’s history.
- Distinguish local storage from transmission: a provider may say it does not retain screenshots while still sending them to an AI model for an answer.
- Read your school’s acceptable-use and academic-integrity rules before using generated hints or worked steps.
- Keep a copy of your own reasoning. An AI explanation can be wrong, incomplete or inconsistent with your instructor’s method.
- Ask for the minimum help needed: a definition, a next-step hint or an error diagnosis is safer and more educational than sharing an entire course folder.
How to get tutoring instead of an answer dump
The wording of your request strongly affects the result. Use prompts that preserve your role as the problem solver.
For math and science
- “Ask me one question at a time to identify where my equation went wrong.”
- “Give me a hint for the next step, but do not calculate the final answer.”
- “Check my units and explain the first incorrect step.”
For reading and history
- “Help me identify the author’s claim using only the passage I described.”
- “Ask questions that help me build an outline; do not write the paragraph.”
- “Explain this term in plain language, then ask me to apply it to the reading.”
For coding
- “Point to the bug and ask what the line is supposed to do before showing a fix.”
- “Give me a smaller test case so I can reproduce the error.”
- “Explain the concept behind the error message, then let me propose the change.”
If the tutor immediately produces a complete solution, ask it to switch to hints, hide the final result and check only the step you attempted. This keeps the interaction aligned with learning rather than submission completion.
Common failure modes and fixes
The tutor does not recognize the assignment
A fixed curriculum may not contain your textbook’s terminology, and an on-screen tool may miss content outside the visible region. Type the exact sentence, equation or instruction that matters, or summarize the missing context in your own words. Do not upload the entire course archive merely to solve one ambiguity.
The explanation conflicts with your class
Ask the tutor to state its assumptions, then compare them with the instructor’s notes. In math and science, check notation, units and sign conventions. In writing and history, check the assigned reading and citation requirements. If the conflict concerns a private rubric or lecture claim, ask the instructor or a human tutor rather than treating the automated answer as authoritative.
You are asked for more data than expected
Stop and inspect what is on screen. Close unrelated tabs, crop or hide personal information and share only the relevant excerpt. For a service that analyzes screenshots, remember that “no upload step” does not mean “nothing leaves the device.”
The service is unavailable
Siko’s current waitlist means access may not be immediate. A Khanmigo account may be unavailable if you are outside the stated U.S. region, lack a U.S. billing address or do not have an eligible adult account holder. Photomath’s current plans and limits require confirmation in its present app or documentation. If none fits, use the school’s approved tools or a live tutor and provide minimal context.
The AI gives a confident but incorrect answer
Ask for a derivation, intermediate steps or a source within the tutor’s own lesson library. Recalculate independently and test code in the approved environment. Khan Academy explicitly warns that AI responses can occasionally be incorrect; that warning applies to the practical decision to verify every consequential answer.
What the available evidence can and cannot establish
The documented differences above describe product workflows, stated access conditions and provider privacy claims. No independent learning-effect statistic or head-to-head accuracy study is cited for these options. Therefore, choose based on fit, supervision and data handling rather than assuming one tool has been proven universally more accurate or educationally effective.
Bottom line for a no-upload learner
Start with Khanmigo if you want patient, Socratic guidance across several subjects and your work fits Khan Academy’s curriculum. Choose Siko when the exact assignment on your screen matters more than a fixed library, but account for its waitlist, internet requirement and screenshot transmission. Use Photomath for narrowly defined math help, after checking its current terms. When private course materials or a professor-specific rubric are essential, a human tutor or school-approved system lets you provide controlled context without handing over an entire archive.
