AI can speed up travel research and help shape an itinerary, but it did not replace a travel agent in a reported family-trip test. Planning suggestions were not live quotes or confirmed bookings, and the traveler still had to book manually and consider who could help if plans went wrong.
What the Disneyland Paris test found
Stuff Associate Editor Spencer Hart gave ChatGPT and Gemini the same brief: two adults and a nearly four-year-old planning a Disneyland Paris trip in early November, on a moderate budget, with an on-site hotel. The comparison was a practical exercise, not a controlled benchmark of every AI assistant or travel agent.
ChatGPT: structured planning with caveats
ChatGPT asked about constraints, built a day-by-day plan, compared hotels and gave price ranges. It described those figures as planning estimates rather than live quotes, pointed to sources and corrected a date detail.
Gemini: more tailored suggestions, less clarity
Gemini offered more personalized suggestions and a Google Maps route card. Hart found its answers less clearly sourced and less explicit about how prices might change. The feature also described unexpected personal details surfacing in Gemini, illustrating that personalization can raise privacy questions as well as improve relevance.

Neither completed the trip booking
Hart could not give either assistant credit-card details to book the trip, so he had to handle the booking manually. He also noted that a good agent can respond when a train is cancelled or a hotel is overbooked; the assistants in this exercise did not provide that kind of real-time help. His conclusion was: “Neither of these fully replaced a human travel agent.” Read the Stuff feature.
Where AI helps—and where it does not
| Travel task | What AI can contribute | What still needs checking or action |
|---|---|---|
| Planning | Organize ideas into an itinerary and tailor suggestions to dates, budget, group and preferences. | Check that recommendations fit your actual constraints and current destination rules. |
| Comparing options | Summarize hotels or routes and help identify trade-offs. | Verify live prices, availability, inclusions and cancellation terms with the booking provider. |
| Booking | Help you prepare and compare before you buy. | Use the appropriate booking channel to confirm the reservation and make payment; the tested assistants did not book Hart’s trip. |
| Disruptions and changes | Help you think through possible next steps. | Know in advance who can actually change a reservation or assist during a cancellation, overbooking or other disruption. |
The key distinction is between a useful answer and an actionable confirmation. A plausible itinerary or price range is not proof that a room, ticket or transport connection is available at that price. Treat AI as a planning assistant, then verify consequential details with the provider before paying.

How to judge an AI travel plan before relying on it
- Check whether it asked for the right constraints. A useful plan should account for dates, party size, budget, priorities and practical needs rather than assuming them.
- Follow the evidence. Prefer answers that link to primary sources and clearly distinguish an estimate from a live quote. Open the links and confirm the relevant details yourself.
- Check personalization and privacy. Decide whether the extra tailoring is useful and whether you are comfortable sharing the information used to produce it.
- Confirm the booking outside the chat. Check current prices, availability, what is included and the terms for changes or cancellation through the actual booking channel.
- Make a disruption plan. Know whom to contact if a service is cancelled, a hotel cannot honor a reservation or you need to change plans. An itinerary alone does not provide assistance.
What traveler surveys say about AI and human help
Several 2026 surveys suggest that AI use and demand for human support can coexist. Their figures should not be compared as if they came from one shared sample: each was commissioned or released by a different company, asked different questions and covered a different population.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches| Finding | Survey details |
|---|---|
| 40% were concerned about poor customer service if something went wrong after an AI purchase. | Expedia Group reported this result from a YouGov survey of more than 5,700 adults in the US, UK and India, conducted 10–25 March 2026. Expedia Group’s report. |
| 77% of surveyed US adults who use AI tools said they were likely to still rely on a human for final travel decisions when using AI to plan; 82% said human support when booking a vacation was extremely or very important. | ALG Vacations reported these results from an Atomik Research online survey of 1,000 US adult AI users, conducted 24–28 April 2026. The release reports a margin of error of ±3 percentage points at 95% confidence. ALG Vacations’ release. |
| 58% of surveyed Americans said they used AI tools to plan summer vacations, compared with 14% who said they relied on human travel agents. Separately, 25% cited inaccurate or outdated information as a frustration and 18% reported encountering AI hallucinations. | Qlik reported these results from a Censuswide survey of 2,001 US adults planning a summer trip, conducted 5–9 June 2026. Qlik’s release. |
These are self-reported survey responses, not measurements of booking success or the quality of individual assistants. They do, however, show why planning convenience is only part of the decision: accuracy, confidence and access to support matter too.

Keep destination guidance specific
Disneyland Paris and Disneyland Resort in California are different destinations, with separate procedures. A planDisney answer dated 13 March 2026 concerns Disneyland Resort in California: it says the resort does not offer travel-agent services, while Cast Members can help with tickets and hotel reservations and a separate phone line handles vacation packages. It also says dining reservations typically open 60 days ahead, with availability not guaranteed. Those details should not be applied to Disneyland Paris. Read the planDisney answer.
For any destination, check the relevant official and booking-provider information for your location and dates. Travel rules, prices, booking windows and availability can change; confirm them before making a payment.
