An AI training cluster is a coordinated system, not a pile of GPU servers. Compute nodes run model calculations, dedicated network fabrics move accelerator and storage traffic, storage tiers feed datasets and retain checkpoints, management services operate the environment, and a scheduler assigns resources to jobs. A sound design keeps those roles explicit so performance, reliability, and supportability can be planned together.
What an AI training cluster includes
Training workloads repeatedly read large datasets, exchange gradients or activations between GPUs, write checkpoints, and compete for shared infrastructure. The cluster architecture determines whether those operations overlap efficiently or wait on one another. NVIDIA describes its DGX SuperPOD architecture as a combination of DGX systems, InfiniBand and Ethernet networking, management nodes, and storage. That description is useful because it treats the cluster as an integrated service rather than a server count.
The exact implementation depends on the model, parallelism strategy, target system generation, power and cooling envelope, and operational requirements. A node count or GPU count by itself does not establish performance. The B200 and GB200 figures discussed below are vendor reference-design examples, not universal sizing rules or independent benchmarks.

GPU compute nodes
Compute nodes host the accelerators and execute training processes. Their internal topology matters: GPUs may communicate through high-speed links within a node, while processes on different nodes communicate over the cluster fabric. The number of GPUs per node, CPU and memory configuration, local storage, and accelerator interconnect should be selected together with the model’s data, tensor, pipeline, or expert-parallel workload.

For a practical design, document the placement of every accelerator, the links available between GPUs, the path to network adapters, and the amount of host memory and local scratch space. A configuration that has enough aggregate GPU capacity can still underperform if a parallel job is split across an unfavorable topology or if data staging consumes the same resources as collective communication.
Network fabrics by traffic purpose
Calling every connection a “fast network” hides important design differences. The B200 reference architecture separates four functions:
- Compute fabric: the accelerator-cluster network used for GPU-to-GPU and node-to-node training communication.
- High-speed storage fabric: a dedicated path to shared storage. In the B200 design, storage is independent of the compute fabric, and the storage fabric provides high bandwidth to shared storage.
- In-band management network: Ethernet connectivity for users and cluster services that operate through the production data path.
- Out-of-band management network: an isolated path for device management and recovery operations.
This separation limits contention and makes failures easier to localize. A storage burst should not automatically consume the links needed for gradient collectives, and a misconfigured management service should not remove the only path to a switch or server controller.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesThe H200 reference material likewise describes an InfiniBand storage fabric and management access to services such as Base Command Manager, Slurm, code repositories, and data sources. Those are examples of a reference design; another deployment may use different products or topologies, but it should still account for each traffic class explicitly.
Storage tiers
One storage system rarely serves every behavior equally well. Training streams large files, creates metadata operations, stages shards, and periodically writes checkpoints. The B200 documentation distinguishes high-performance storage from user storage. H200 guidance describes high-performance storage as being designed for parallel I/O, while user storage emphasizes metadata performance, IOPS, enterprise capabilities such as checkpointing, and a secondary management path.

Separate tiers can therefore have different purposes:
- High-performance training storage supplies many workers concurrently and is tuned for sustained parallel reads and writes.
- User or enterprise storage holds home directories, experiment artifacts, metadata, and durable checkpoints where management and data-protection features are important.
- Local node storage can cache datasets, package environments, or temporary shuffle data, reducing repeated reads from shared systems but requiring an explicit refresh and eviction policy.
In NVIDIA’s B200 component description, the reference requirement is at least 40 GBps of storage bandwidth per DGX B200 system. That is a requirement in that particular design, not a general recommendation for every cluster. Measure the aggregate demand of the intended jobs, including simultaneous checkpointing, rather than multiplying a headline number without considering concurrency.

A typical training iteration follows a pipeline: workers obtain batches from storage, decode and transform them, run forward and backward passes on GPUs, exchange data for the selected parallelism method, and periodically persist checkpoints. The architecture should allow these phases to overlap. If all workers read from one bottleneck, faster GPUs will spend time idle. If checkpoint writes share congested links with collectives, a save operation can stall every rank.
Designers should record, for each workload:
- Dataset size, file and shard format, and expected read concurrency.
- Whether workers repeatedly revisit data or can use a local cache.
- Checkpoint frequency, checkpoint size, retention policy, and recovery objective.
- Metadata intensity, including the number of files opened per step.
- Whether multiple jobs will checkpoint at the same time.
These measurements determine whether the priority is sequential bandwidth, random I/O, metadata operations, or a combination. A storage tier optimized for one dimension should not be assumed to satisfy all the others.
Scheduling and cluster operations
What the scheduler does
The scheduler is the control point that turns a pool of GPUs into a shared service. It queues jobs, reserves whole nodes or specific GPU counts, enforces priorities and limits, starts distributed workers, and releases resources when a job ends. It also provides the accounting and placement information needed to diagnose failed or slow runs.

NVIDIA’s SuperPOD FAQ identifies Slurm as an enterprise-proven scheduler for multi-GPU, multi-node batch processing. In a Slurm-based design, a job request should express the number of nodes, GPUs per node, CPUs, memory, expected wall time, and any required placement or partition constraints. The launcher then propagates rank and network information to each worker. Exact command syntax depends on the installed version and site policy, so operators should use the cluster’s deployment documentation rather than copy assumptions from an unrelated system.
Support and qualification implications
The same FAQ warns that substituting a scheduler or changing other major components can affect a system’s status as a supported NVIDIA DGX SuperPOD. The cited constraints include the scheduler, operating system, certified storage, and fabric topology. This is a support and certification condition for that branded solution, not proof that other schedulers are technically incapable of running distributed training. Organizations should decide early whether maintaining the reference qualification is more important than customizing the software stack.
Management services
Management nodes and services provision hosts, maintain images, collect health data, expose repositories, and coordinate user access. Keep management traffic on the intended in-band and out-of-band paths, and define who can perform firmware, switch, and node operations. Monitoring should cover GPU health, link errors, fabric congestion, storage latency and throughput, filesystem capacity, scheduler queue times, failed jobs, and checkpoint completion. A dashboard that reports only GPU utilization can miss a saturated storage path or a failing network link.
Scale examples: read the generation and unit definition
Reference architectures use “scalable unit” as a building block, but the meaning changes by generation. NVIDIA’s B200 architecture reference focuses on four scalable units containing 128 DGX nodes and 1,024 GPUs. Its table also gives these examples:
| B200 scalable units | DGX nodes | GPUs | What the figure represents |
|---|---|---|---|
| 2 | 64 | 512 | A smaller example in the same B200 reference design |
| 4 | 128 | 1,024 | The reference design’s central example |
| 64 | 2,048 | 16,384 | The largest tabled B200 example |
The GB200 reference is a different generation and defines a scalable unit as eight DGX GB200 systems. Do not combine that unit definition with the B200 node and GPU table or treat either as a standard for all vendors. Before ordering equipment, verify the target generation’s own architecture guide, rack design, switch count, and facility requirements.

A step-by-step design method
- Characterize the jobs. Record model size, parallelism approach, batch and sequence dimensions, expected run time, data volume, checkpoint behavior, and the minimum acceptable recovery time.
- Choose the compute building block. Select the target accelerator generation and node topology, then document GPUs per node, host memory, local scratch, accelerator links, and network-adapter placement.
- Map traffic classes. Draw separate paths for accelerator collectives, storage, user access, in-band services, and out-of-band management. Identify where paths are shared and where they are isolated.
- Size storage from concurrency. Calculate read demand from the number of workers and batch pipeline, then add checkpoint and artifact writes. Validate bandwidth, metadata performance, IOPS, capacity, and protection features independently.
- Define scheduling policy. Establish partitions or queues, GPU and node limits, priorities, reservations, wall-time limits, and placement rules. Confirm the scheduler and operating system remain within any required support or certification boundary.
- Plan the facility. Check rack power, cooling, floor layout, cable lengths and routes, switch placement, and expansion increments. High-density systems can make facility capacity the limiting factor before compute capacity is exhausted.
- Instrument acceptance tests. Test multi-node collectives, concurrent data loading, checkpoint saves and restores, node or link failures, scheduler recovery, and management-plane access. Record results for the exact generation and topology being deployed.
Power, cooling, cabling, and physical growth
Large clusters are physical systems as much as logical ones. Accelerator nodes, network switches, storage servers, and power-delivery equipment all consume rack space and generate heat. Cable paths must preserve the intended topology without exceeding length or bend constraints, and out-of-band connections should remain reachable during a fabric outage.
Use scalable units as procurement and expansion increments only after confirming what a unit contains in the selected generation. A design that grows by adding compute but not storage or fabric capacity can create an imbalance in which new GPUs wait for data or network bandwidth. Conversely, overbuilding every tier may waste capital if the workload is limited by model parallelism or queue policy.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. How to compare candidate designs
When evaluating two architectures, compare like-for-like generations and workload assumptions across these axes:
| Area | Questions to answer |
|---|---|
| Compute topology | How many GPUs per node, which intra-node links exist, and how are GPUs placed across nodes? |
| Inter-node fabric | What are the bandwidth, latency, adapter count, routing, and failure domains for collective traffic? |
| Storage | What are sustained parallel-I/O rates, metadata and IOPS behavior, capacity, checkpoint performance, and protection options? |
| Operations | Are management and data paths separated, and can operators service a failed device without losing control access? |
| Scheduler and software | Which scheduler, operating system, drivers, containers, and certified components are supported? |
| Facility | What power, cooling, rack, cabling, and expansion requirements apply to the target generation? |
These questions expose trade-offs more reliably than comparing a single GPU specification. Vendor reference numbers should be labeled as such; they are useful design anchors but are not neutral cross-vendor benchmarks.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Common failure modes and corrective actions
GPU utilization is low despite available accelerators
Check data-loader wait time, storage latency, CPU saturation, and network congestion before adding GPUs. A separate high-performance storage path or a larger cache may address the bottleneck; increasing the GPU count alone may make it worse.

Distributed jobs stall during collectives
Inspect the compute fabric for link errors, oversubscription, incorrect routing, and topology mismatches. Confirm that storage and management traffic are not unintentionally sharing the collective path.
Checkpointing pauses every job
Measure checkpoint write bandwidth and metadata behavior under concurrent saves. Schedule checkpoints to avoid synchronized bursts, use the intended enterprise storage tier, and verify that retention and recovery policies do not create unnecessary duplicate writes.
Jobs remain queued or receive fragmented placement
Review scheduler limits, reservations, wall-time estimates, and placement constraints. Distributed training often needs a coherent set of nodes; a queue with many free individual GPUs may still be unable to satisfy a whole-job request.
The deployment loses reference support
Compare the installed scheduler, operating system, storage, and fabric topology with the qualified configuration. If a component was replaced, decide whether to restore the supported design or accept responsibility for a custom deployment.
Practical checklist before production
- Model and document intra-node and inter-node GPU topology.
- Separate compute, storage, in-band, and out-of-band traffic as intended.
- Validate parallel reads, metadata operations, and concurrent checkpoint writes.
- Test multi-node jobs at the largest planned placement, not only on one node.
- Set scheduler limits and failure handling for both short experiments and long training runs.
- Monitor fabric errors, storage latency, filesystem capacity, GPU health, and queue behavior.
- Confirm rack power, cooling, cable routes, and expansion capacity for the selected generation.
- Keep generation-specific architecture and support documents with the operational runbook.
The Bottom Line
Design the cluster as one system: match GPU topology to the training algorithm, isolate network traffic by purpose, size storage for parallel reads and checkpoint behavior, and treat scheduling and support boundaries as architecture decisions. NVIDIA’s B200 and GB200 references provide concrete examples, but their counts and requirements must not be generalized beyond the specified generation and design.
