AI-related technology shares extended their sell-off on Thursday, October 15, 2026. Memory and data-storage stocks including Micron, SanDisk, SK Hynix, Seagate and Western Digital were down more than 5% in early trading, while CoreWeave fell another 8% after losing 15% the previous day. The Roundhill Memory ETF was down 7% at the time covered by Yahoo Finance’s report, originally published by Investopedia.
What happened in Thursday’s trading
The decline was broad rather than confined to one company. Memory makers, storage vendors, semiconductor shares and AI-infrastructure providers all came under pressure. The technology-heavy Nasdaq was also weak after falling nearly 2% on Wednesday following a hotter-than-expected inflation report.
These percentages are early-session figures from the October 15 market snapshot; they can change substantially before the close. They should not be read as closing returns or as evidence that every company in the sector moved by the same amount.

Why memory and storage stocks were hit
A reported Chinese production breakthrough
The immediate sector-specific catalyst was a report that a Chinese company had achieved a breakthrough in memory-chip production. The account did not establish the company’s name, production volume, commercial yield or shipment schedule. Investors nevertheless treated the news as a potential increase in competition for established memory and storage suppliers.

Memory is a globally traded, cyclical business. If a new supplier can eventually produce competitive parts at scale, customers may gain negotiating leverage and incumbent manufacturers could face pressure on prices, market share or future margins. Thursday’s reaction reflects that risk being repriced; it does not prove that the reported breakthrough will translate into large commercial supply.
Why the reaction spread beyond memory manufacturers
Storage companies and related semiconductor names are exposed to overlapping customers, component costs and capital-spending cycles. A concern about future memory pricing can therefore affect businesses that sell drives, storage systems or other infrastructure even when the original development involves a different part of the supply chain.

Why CoreWeave dropped more sharply
CoreWeave became a focal point because of its financing structure. Investors were concerned that the market price of the company’s long-term debt could make it harder or more expensive to finance additional data centers. Building AI infrastructure requires substantial upfront spending on servers, networking, power and facilities. When debt financing becomes less attractive, expansion can require more equity, proceed more slowly or generate lower returns.

That performance does not establish a default, a funding shortfall or a change in customer demand. It shows that public-market investors were assigning greater risk to the cost and availability of capital.

Is the AI trade losing momentum?
The sell-off shows investors questioning whether the enormous sums being committed to AI will produce returns high enough to justify the spending. That is an economic debate, not a finding that AI demand has disappeared.

These concerns can coexist with rapid growth in AI usage. A company may sell more equipment while its shares fall if investors believe the required spending, financing costs or competitive pressure will absorb too much of the eventual profit.
