If you want an AI tool beyond ChatGPT or Midjourney, start with the task—not a leaderboard. The options here serve different needs: writing, working with your own source documents, literature research, coding, design, or image creation. The evidence supports seven useful options, not nine, so this guide does not pad the count with unverified names.
How to choose an AI tool beyond ChatGPT and Midjourney
The Prairie Initiative at the University of Nebraska–Lincoln notes that “AI tools are changing quickly, and choosing the right one can be difficult.” Its AI Tools Library organizes services by purpose and encourages readers to weigh strengths, limitations, platform, API availability, and responsible-use considerations.
Use these questions to narrow your options:
- What job do you need done? Writing, source-based study, literature review, coding, design, and image generation are different workflows.
- Should it use your documents or general prompts? A tool grounded in material you supply may be more useful for a bounded set of sources than a general assistant.
- Does it fit your existing workflow? Consider the apps you already use, as well as supported inputs and outputs.
- Can you access it where you are? Availability and limits can depend on geography, product, or plan. Check current terms before choosing.
- Can you verify its output? AI responses can be inaccurate. Check consequential claims against reliable sources, and review the service’s current data terms before uploading sensitive material. Capabilities and privacy expectations can vary by service tier.
Seven AI tools organized by task
Writing and long documents: Claude
The University of Nebraska–Lincoln directory describes Claude as an option for professional writing, revision, synthesis, and long-document analysis. Consider it when those tasks are central to your workflow; the directory’s description does not establish that it is better than other models.
Working with your own sources: NotebookLM
NotebookLM is described as a source-grounded assistant for summarizing and synthesizing materials you provide. It may suit study or document work where answers should stay tied to a bounded collection of sources. Its usefulness depends on the quality and completeness of those materials, so check whether key documents are missing and verify important conclusions against the originals.
#1 Best Overall
Literature reviews and evidence extraction: Elicit
The directory lists Elicit as a research assistant for literature reviews and evidence extraction. Treat it as a way to support a research workflow, not as a replacement for reading and evaluating the underlying papers. Confirm that extracted claims accurately reflect the original studies.
Coding assistance: GitHub Copilot
GitHub Copilot is listed as a coding tool. The cited description supports that category fit, but does not establish comparative coding performance or current plan details. Review generated code, test it in your project, and check current product terms before adopting it.
Rank #2
Image generation and editing: Adobe Firefly
The directory describes Adobe Firefly as an image-generation and editing option within Adobe’s creative ecosystem. It may fit people already working with Adobe tools. That positioning is not a guarantee about the legal status of a particular output; review the terms and permissions relevant to your intended use.

Design workflows: Canva AI
Canva AI is categorized as a design tool. That makes it a design-workflow option, rather than simply a substitute for a dedicated image-generation service. Choose based on the kind of design work you need and how it fits your existing process.
Image creation and editing: Meta Muse Image
In a July 7, 2026 announcement, Meta Superintelligence Labs described Muse Image as a model for following instructions, editing precisely, and composing from multiple references. Meta said it was available through Meta AI, Instagram Stories in the United States, and WhatsApp in limited countries. These are company statements and access details can change, so check availability for your location and product before relying on it. The same announcement called Muse Video a preview and said broader availability was forthcoming at that time.
