There is no verified book or publication titled AI & The Programmer: A Manifesto for Developers Who Refuse to Be Replaced in the material available for this topic. That means no author, edition, chapter list, or manifesto can responsibly be attributed to it. The useful question is what current commentary does—and does not—say about AI coding tools, programming work, and job replacement.
Is “AI & The Programmer” a real book or manifesto?
The exact-title publication identity is unverified: no reliable title page or publication record establishes an author, publisher, edition, or contents. Treat the phrase as an editorial topic, not as the name of a known book. In particular, there is no substantiated title-specific manifesto to quote or summarize.
How might AI coding agents change a programmer’s work?
A third-party topic index compiling Steve Yegge commentary describes a possible shift in developer work toward directing coding agents, reviewing their output, and coordinating tasks. This is commentary about changing work practices, not a measured result about productivity or employment outcomes. Read the Steve Yegge topic index.

Reviewing generated code still involves deciding whether it meets requirements, fits the surrounding system, and behaves as intended. The commentary does not establish how widely this workflow is used or how much it changes the amount of work required.

Why might programming languages still matter?
An excerpt from Moral Codes argues that programming languages remain important and that natural language is not automatically the right interface for programming. That is the author’s position in the excerpt, not a demonstrated consensus about how software should be built. Read the Moral Codes excerpt.
The distinction matters even when a developer uses an AI agent: describing an intended change in ordinary language is not the same as understanding the code produced or its behavior. The excerpt supports the case for taking programming languages seriously; it does not quantify the future demand for programmers.

What does this evidence establish about programmer replacement?
It does not establish how many programmers AI will replace, when displacement might occur, or whether the net effect on employment will be positive or negative. The available commentary concerns possible changes to how developers work, while the book excerpt advances a position about programming languages. Neither provides labor-market measurements that answer those questions.
Keep two separate questions in view when assessing claims about AI and programming:
Rank #3
- Workflow: Does a developer or team use agents to generate or modify code, or continue to do more of the work manually?
- Responsibility: Do people review and understand the resulting software, or rely on generated output without sufficient scrutiny?
These are useful ways to frame the debate, not a validated scoring system or proof of what will happen to a particular job.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. How should developers read claims about AI and their jobs?
Separate claims about tasks from claims about employment. A claim that agents can take on some coding tasks does not, on its own, prove that a job will be eliminated; a claim that developers will review more generated code does not prove that employment will remain unchanged. To assess a specific prediction, look for evidence that directly measures hiring, displacement, or workforce changes and states its scope and date. The sources discussed here do not provide that evidence.
