AI text detection estimates whether writing may have been generated or altered by an AI system. A detector’s score or highlighted passage is an assessment of patterns in the text—not proof of who wrote it. False positives and false negatives are possible, so a flag should be treated as a reason to review context, not as a verdict.
What AI text detection means
An AI text detector analyzes submitted writing and returns an indicator, score, or highlighted passages that its system considers consistent with AI-generated or AI-altered text. It generally makes an inference from the text, rather than retrieving a conclusive record of how the text was produced.
Detection products do not all use the same method. OpenAI described its former classifier as a language model fine-tuned on paired human-written and AI-written text on the same topic. Turnitin describes its report as identifying qualifying prose its model assesses as likely AI-generated, with a separate category for text that may have been AI-paraphrased or altered. Those examples do not establish that every detector uses the same features or approach. Avoid assuming that one proposed signal, such as perplexity, describes all systems.

Can a detector tell whether ChatGPT wrote something?
No detector result, including a ChatGPT response about authorship, establishes who wrote a passage on its own. OpenAI says ChatGPT has no reliable knowledge of whether it generated a given text and may invent an answer when asked to identify authorship. Its help article states: “ChatGPT has no ‘knowledge’ of what content could be AI-generated or what it generated.” OpenAI Help Center

A detector can flag text it considers statistically consistent with AI-generated writing, but a positive result can be wrong. A negative result does not prove that AI was not used. The distinction is important: an indicator about a passage is not an identification of its author.
How accurate are AI text detectors?
There is no single accuracy figure that applies to the detector market as a whole. Results vary with the detector and its version, the language and length of the text, its genre, the AI model, how much the text has been edited, the human comparison set, and the threshold used to classify it. Vendor descriptions and independent studies may therefore report different results without testing the same conditions.

What a discontinued OpenAI classifier showed
In 2023, OpenAI reported that its text classifier correctly identified 26% of AI-written text in its English challenge set as “likely AI-written” and incorrectly labeled human-written text as AI-written 9% of the time. OpenAI called it unreliable and discontinued the classifier on July 20, 2023. These figures describe that historical classifier and test set; they are not current accuracy estimates for other detectors. OpenAI, “New AI classifier for indicating AI-written text”

A 2023 arXiv study evaluated 12 publicly available tools and two commercial systems, including Turnitin and PlagiarismCheck. Its authors concluded that the tools in their evaluation were not accurate or reliable, and found that obfuscation techniques further reduced performance. That conclusion applies to the tools and test setting in the study, not automatically to every product or later version. “Testing of Detection Tools for AI-Generated Text”
OpenAI’s educator guidance also reports that detector work sometimes labeled human-written examples such as Shakespeare and the Declaration of Independence as AI-generated. It warns of potential disparate impacts on some English-language learners and on formulaic or concise writing. These are reasons to avoid treating a detector flag as a standalone accusation. How to read a Turnitin AI Writing Report
Turnitin is one product example, not a definition of AI detection in general. Its report percentage indicates the share of qualifying text that its model identifies as likely AI-generated or as likely AI-generated and subsequently altered using an AI paraphraser or bypasser. Turnitin says this result is separate from and independent of the similarity score: similarity checking and AI-writing detection are different indicators. Turnitin, “Using the AI Writing Report”
Submission conditions and limitations
At the time described in Turnitin’s guide, a submission needed at least 300 words of prose in a long-form format and could contain no more than 30,000 words. The guide listed English, Spanish, Japanese, and Arabic, and DOCX, PDF, TXT, and RTF files. Turnitin says its model does not reliably detect non-prose such as poetry, scripts, and code, or short and unconventional formats such as bullet lists, tables, and annotated bibliographies. Check Turnitin’s live guide for current requirements because product coverage can change.
Why some low percentages appear as an asterisk
Turnitin suppresses the numerical score and highlights for detected amounts from 1% to 19%, displaying an asterisk because of false-positive concerns. Reports created before July 8, 2024 may show an older numerical score in that range. This is Turnitin’s reporting choice; it is not a universal threshold or a guarantee that a higher score is correct.
Turnitin’s release notes document changes over time, including Spanish detection in September 2024 and Japanese detection in April 2025, as well as later updates to AI paraphrase and bypasser detection. Turnitin, “AI writing detection model”

A detector result is best treated as a prompt for contextual review. DePaul University’s guidance recommends cautious use, further review, and treating a detection result as the beginning of a conversation rather than a strict enforcement tool. DePaul University Teaching Commons, “AI Detectors”
- Review the applicable course or workplace policy and the requirements of the assignment.
- Ask the writer to explain their process, sources, and choices, rather than treating a score as proof.
- Consider drafts, version history, notes, assignment context, and relevant AI conversations where available.
- Keep the tool’s indicator separate from the human decision about authorship or misconduct.
OpenAI’s educator guidance suggests asking students to document and cite AI use, share relevant AI conversations, and use those records to discuss process, information literacy, and how they evaluated AI output. OpenAI educator guidance
What to check before relying on a detector
For a specific product or institutional workflow, verify the details that determine whether its result fits the case:
- Supported languages, text types, and minimum or maximum input length.
- Whether it reports a document-level indicator, passage-level highlights, or both.
- How it handles paraphrased or mixed-origin text.
- Whether it publishes false-positive and false-negative performance, and the test set and threshold behind those figures.
- Its privacy and retention terms, accessibility, and fit with the institution’s review process.
Do not rank tools as universally “most accurate” by comparing vendor claims or tests conducted on different samples.
