A paid AI plan is like an electric bill: you pay for continuing access to a provider’s service, models, interface, and features. Running AI locally is more like generating power with a solar panel: you can avoid per-use cloud charges for supported models, but the computer still costs money, consumes electricity, and takes work to set up and maintain. An ordinary PC does not automatically replace a paid AI service.
What you pay for with an AI subscription
A subscription buys access to a hosted service rather than ownership of a model running on your computer. The provider operates the models and interface and may bundle tools or other features. The trade-off is ongoing cost, along with plan-specific limits and terms.
As of October 7, 2026, Anthropic listed Claude Pro at US$20 per month in the US. Anthropic says Pro usage exceeds the free plan but is still subject to session and weekly limits; the consumer plan does not include API usage. See Anthropic’s plan details. Google listed Google AI Pro at US$19.99 per month on its US page, with higher Gemini access and other Google features; availability and inclusions vary by geography. See Google’s AI plan details. These are examples, not a complete or region-neutral price comparison.

What local AI changes—and what it does not
With local inference, compatible software runs a model on your own hardware. For those runs, you can avoid a cloud inference charge, but “local” does not mean cost-free: you may need to buy or upgrade a computer, pay for electricity, spend time installing and maintaining software, and accept the limits of your hardware and chosen model.
Ollama describes local hardware runs as unlimited under its service model, while its cloud usage uses credits and token pricing. That statement concerns Ollama’s service model; it does not make a computer’s capacity unlimited, guarantee support for every model, or remove electricity costs. Some features or models may use the cloud. Check Ollama’s pricing information and GPU support documentation for the setup you intend to use.

Compare the costs over the same period
There is no universal break-even month. The answer depends on whether you already own suitable hardware, what you would otherwise spend on subscriptions, how often you use AI, your electricity rate, and whether the local model handles your work well enough.
| Cost or factor | Hosted subscription | Local inference |
|---|---|---|
| Access cost | Recurring plan fee; price and included features depend on provider, region, and plan. | No per-use cloud inference charge for runs performed locally, but the computer and software still have costs. |
| Hardware | Usually no dedicated local AI hardware purchase is needed to use the hosted service. | Uses your existing computer if it supports the chosen model; a new purchase or upgrade may be needed for some workloads. |
| Power | Your device uses power, while the provider runs the model remotely. | Your computer consumes electricity while running inference; the cost depends on usage and local power rates. |
| Setup and upkeep | The provider maintains its service; you use its interface and bundled features. | You choose and download models and runtimes, configure them, and maintain them. |
| Limits and fit | Plan limits and reset rules apply; capabilities depend on the provider’s models and features. | Performance and availability depend on the hardware, software support, model, and settings. |
If the PC is already yours, treat its purchase price as a sunk cost for a decision about using it now; compare incremental electricity, setup time, and any upgrades with subscription fees. If you would buy a PC specifically for local AI, include that purchase and any future upgrades in the same time period as the subscriptions you are considering. Do not count local inference as a saving while ignoring the hardware cost that made it possible.

Check whether local models can do your actual work
Cost is only useful if the alternatives can handle the same jobs. Test the kind of writing, coding, research, image understanding, or other work you actually do. Compare output quality, reliability, speed, and any tools you rely on—not just whether both options can produce a response. The available plan and product information does not establish that local models match any particular hosted subscription.
Hosted plans can bundle a polished interface and provider features. A local setup gives you a different set of choices: you select the runtime and model, and compatibility and performance depend on your machine. For a question like “How close can I get to Claude Pro with a local model?”, the answer is workload-specific; a Reddit post using that phrasing is a user question, not a benchmark. See the discussion as an example of the question, not proof of equivalent performance.

Check hardware before buying anything
Start with the computer you already have and the model you want to run. Hardware fit depends on the model, its quantization, memory requirements, and the speed you expect; a GPU is not required for every local model. Check whether your intended runtime supports your hardware before making an upgrade decision. Ollama’s GPU support documentation covers supported hardware, including NVIDIA GPUs, but does not establish one universally suitable graphics card.

Limits and availability
A paid plan may have usage caps or reset rules even when it offers more access than a free tier. Claude Pro, for example, has session and weekly limits. Local use avoids a provider’s subscription usage cap for a local run, but remains constrained by the machine, runtime, and model support.

Convenience and features
A hosted subscription is generally the simpler choice when you want the provider’s interface and bundled features without managing models. Local inference makes more sense when you are willing to choose, download, and maintain a runtime and model in exchange for running supported workloads on your own machine.
Privacy
Do not treat “local” as a blanket privacy guarantee. Check the exact software, configuration, data handling, and whether any feature sends prompts or files to a cloud service. Apply the same care to a hosted product’s data policy before sending sensitive information.
Quick Recap
Choose based on your situation
- Consider a hosted plan if its specific models and features suit your work and you value a managed interface more than avoiding a recurring fee. Check the current regional price and usage limits.
- Try local inference on existing hardware if you are comfortable with setup and your chosen model performs adequately for your tasks. This is the clearest way to evaluate fit before buying new equipment.
- Consider a hardware upgrade only after checking compatibility if local performance or model support is inadequate and the cost still makes sense over your expected use period.
- Use both when their roles differ if local runs handle some tasks while a hosted service’s capabilities or features are still useful for others. Compare the combined cost with your actual usage rather than assuming one must eliminate the other.
