To compare AI stocks responsibly, examine growth, margins, cash conversion, valuation, capital structure, and execution risk together. A headline P/E or EV-to-sales ratio is only a starting point: it is meaningful only against a fair peer, historical, or benchmark comparison and a clearly defined period. The practical question is not “Which AI stock has the lowest multiple?” but “What future cash flows and risks does this price imply?”

Why AI-stock multiples are unusually easy to misread

Companies described as AI businesses can have very different economics: a recurring software subscription model, a hardware manufacturer, a cloud infrastructure provider, a consulting operation, or an early-stage product company still spending heavily to find repeatable demand. Applying one “AI multiple” to all of them ignores those differences.

A multiple is a relative-valuation tool. Compare it with a similar company, the company’s own history, or an appropriate industry, sector, market, or peer-group benchmark, and explain why the comparison is fair. CFA Institute’s valuation guidance emphasizes that a difference from a benchmark can reflect differences in growth, margins, risk, or capital structure rather than a simple bargain or overvaluation. See CFA Institute’s market-based valuation guide.

Growth can create value only when it supports durable earnings or cash flow. Rapid sales expansion can coexist with weak margins, operating losses, large capital requirements, customer concentration, or uncertain sales timing. Conversely, a slower-growing company with strong margins and reliable cash generation can justify a different multiple from a faster but riskier business.

Start with the numerator and denominator

Before comparing a ratio, identify exactly what is in its numerator and denominator, whether each figure is trailing or forecast, and the period and currency used.

Valuation family Numerator Denominator What it helps answer Important omission
Price-to-earnings (P/E) Share price or equity value Earnings per share or net income attributable to common shareholders How much investors pay for a unit of current or expected earnings It becomes unusable or distorted when earnings are negative, unusually volatile, or affected by accounting items
PEG P/E Expected earnings-growth rate How the P/E relates to a particular growth forecast It inherits the forecast’s uncertainty and is not a universal fair-value rule
Price-to-sales (P/S) Share price or equity value Revenue per share or total revenue How the market prices a unit of sales when earnings are unavailable It ignores cost structure, investment needs, and the quality of revenue recognition
Enterprise-value-to-sales (EV/Sales) Enterprise value, generally equity value plus debt and other claims minus cash Total revenue How the whole operating business is priced, allowing comparisons across capital structures Sales do not show whether the company can become profitable or generate cash
Enterprise-value-to-EBITDA (EV/EBITDA) Enterprise value Earnings before interest, taxes, depreciation, and amortization Operating valuation before financing and certain noncash charges EBITDA excludes capital expenditure and working-capital requirements; it is not free cash flow

Price multiples pair an equity measure with an equity measure. Enterprise-value multiples pair enterprise value with a company-level operating measure. Mixing share price with EBITDA, or enterprise value with earnings per share, produces an inconsistent comparison.

For every multiple, label whether it is trailing (based on reported results), forward (based on an estimate), or based on a specific next-twelve-month or fiscal-year period. A forward ratio is not an observed fact; it is a price divided by a forecast that can change.

Measure growth beyond a single percentage

Use several periods

Review year-over-year revenue growth across multiple periods and, when disclosed, separate organic growth from acquisitions, foreign-exchange effects, or one-time contracts. A single high-growth quarter can reflect a difficult prior-year comparison, a large customer deployment, or revenue timing rather than a durable trend.

Identify what is paying for the growth

Read the filing’s business discussion for evidence of recurring demand, customer additions, retention, usage expansion, backlog, or other disclosed drivers. The same growth rate has a different value when it comes from many renewing customers than when it depends on a few contracts or a temporary project.

Connect growth to eventual economics

Growth is a forecast input, not a guarantee. Ask whether incremental sales carry attractive gross margins, whether selling costs rise proportionally, and whether additional infrastructure or research spending is required. CFA Institute notes that a justified P/S multiple is related to profit margin, growth, and required return; therefore, two businesses with the same sales multiple can have very different economics.

For a young or loss-making company, P/E may be unavailable or misleading. EV/Sales can provide a comparison point because sales may remain positive, but it says little about the cost structure or the path to profitability.

Read margins and cash conversion together

Gross margin shows product economics

Gross margin indicates how much revenue remains after the direct cost of delivering the product or service. Compare its level and direction with peers. A falling gross margin can signal pricing pressure, a shift toward lower-margin offerings, cloud-compute costs, or customer and product mix changes.

Operating margin shows the burden of running the business

Operating margin measures operating profit relative to revenue after operating expenses such as research and development, sales, and administration. Track the margin over time, not only the latest figure. Rapid revenue growth with a widening operating loss requires a credible explanation of when and how operating leverage is expected.

Free-cash-flow margin tests cash generation

Free-cash-flow margin adds a cash perspective after operating needs and investment. Cash flow can be affected by working-capital movements and capital expenditures, so inspect the components rather than treating one period as a permanent run rate. A company can report accounting earnings while using cash, or report a loss while generating cash temporarily through working-capital changes.

SEC-filed factor disclosures commonly consider sales growth and operating margins alongside free cash flow, leverage, relative P/E, and financial risk. That combination supports a multi-factor review rather than a single-metric test; see the SEC-filed investment-factor disclosure.

What each major valuation metric can—and cannot—tell you

P/E: useful only when earnings are meaningful

P/E compares share price with earnings per share. State whether the figure is trailing or forward and identify the earnings period. Negative earnings make the ratio meaningless; unusually high or low earnings can make it misleading. The SEC’s Beginners’ Guide to Financial Statements explains how to read the underlying statements.

PEG: a forecast-dependent supplement

PEG divides P/E by an expected earnings-growth rate. It can help organize a growth comparison, but the result changes when the growth estimate, period, or earnings basis changes. It does not prove that a particular PEG is fair, and it should not be compared across companies with different accounting, cyclicality, or risk without adjustment.

P/S and EV/Sales: useful when profits are absent

Sales-based ratios allow comparisons when earnings are negative, but revenue is not profit or cash flow. They ignore differences in gross margin, operating expense, reinvestment, and revenue quality. EV/Sales is often preferable when companies have different debt and cash balances because enterprise value covers the operating business, but it still cannot establish an eventual path to cash generation.

EV/EBITDA: an operating comparison, not a cash-flow valuation

EBITDA excludes interest, taxes, depreciation, and amortization, so it pairs naturally with enterprise value. It can make operating comparisons clearer across financing structures, yet it omits capital expenditure and working-capital needs. A capital-intensive AI infrastructure business and an asset-light software business can show similar EBITDA while producing very different free cash flow.

Cash-flow multiples and DCF

Define the cash-flow measure before calculating a multiple. CFA Institute distinguishes free cash flow to the firm (FCFF), available to all capital providers, from free cash flow to equity (FCFE), available to common shareholders. The numerator must match the claims represented by the valuation measure.

Discounted cash flow (DCF) values expected future cash flows in present terms. CFA Institute defines the method this way: “Discounted cash flow (DCF) valuation views the intrinsic value of a security as the present value of its expected future cash flows.” — CFA Institute, Free Cash Flow Valuation, 2026 CFA Program curriculum.

Use peer comparisons without turning a median into a verdict

Build a peer set based on business model, customer type, revenue mix, geography, scale, and profitability—not merely the presence of the word “AI.” Then align the measurement basis: trailing with trailing, or the same forward period with the same forward period.

Comparison axis Questions to answer
Growth What is the rate, duration, and source of growth? Is it organic, recurring, acquired, or concentrated?
Margins How do gross and operating margins compare, and are they improving or deteriorating?
Cash conversion How much revenue or EBITDA becomes free cash flow after investment and working-capital needs?
Valuation Is the ratio trailing or forward, and how does it compare with peers and the company’s own history on a consistent basis?
Capital structure Do debt, cash, leases, dilution, or other claims change the equity-holder risk?
Forecast uncertainty How sensitive is the implied value to revenue, margin, reinvestment, and discount-rate assumptions?

A peer median is a description of the selected group, not a fair-value conclusion. A company can deserve a premium for stronger growth and margins, or a discount for concentration, leverage, or execution risk. CFA Institute’s comparable-valuation material highlights peer, industry, market, sector, and company-history benchmarks as possible reference points.

Build a DCF as a range, not a single precise number

  1. Set the starting point. Use reported revenue, operating results, balance-sheet data, and cash flow from the latest filing. Separate recurring operations from unusual items.
  2. Forecast operating drivers. Estimate revenue growth by product or segment where disclosures permit, then model gross margin, operating expenses, taxes, working capital, and capital expenditure.
  3. Choose the matching cash flow. Use FCFF with a firm-level discount rate and enterprise value, or FCFE with an equity discount rate and equity value.
  4. Estimate the terminal value. State the terminal growth or exit-multiple assumption and explain why it is consistent with a mature business.
  5. Discount each period. Convert forecast cash flows and terminal value to present value using the selected discount rate.
  6. Run sensitivities. Show how value changes when growth, margins, reinvestment, terminal assumptions, or the discount rate move. A narrow range created by optimistic assumptions is not evidence of precision.

DCF is complementary to multiples. Multiples anchor a market comparison; DCF makes the assumptions behind intrinsic value explicit. CFA Institute reports that a 2019 study cited in its 2026 curriculum found 92.8% of surveyed analysts used market multiples and 78.8% used a discounted-cash-flow approach; among discounted-free-cash-flow users, 86.9% used discounted free-cash-flow models. These are reported analyst-use statistics, not evidence that either method produces superior investment performance.

Make risk part of the valuation

Financial risk

  • Review debt maturities, interest expense, cash balances, lease obligations, and potential dilution.
  • Check whether the company needs repeated equity raises or debt financing to sustain its plan.
  • Compare operating cash burn with available liquidity and contractual commitments.

Customer and revenue risk

  • Look for concentration among major customers, dependence on renewals, and exposure to a small number of contracts.
  • Distinguish backlog or remaining performance obligations from recognized revenue; timing can move results between periods.
  • Test whether demand is recurring or dependent on discretionary projects and pilots.

Execution and model risk

  • Assess whether the company can deliver products at the promised cost and scale, including infrastructure and hiring requirements.
  • Identify dependencies on suppliers, cloud capacity, data access, regulation, or rapidly changing technology.
  • Challenge forecasts when management cannot establish when profitability will be reached or when operating expenses are expected to keep rising.

Higher expected growth can support a higher justified multiple, while a higher required return reduces it. The relationship is not a mechanical rule for deciding whether a market price is appropriate; it is a reason to connect assumptions and risk rather than viewing ratios in isolation.

A dated filing example: what C3.ai’s disclosures illustrate

C3.ai, Inc.’s fiscal 2026 filing reported net losses of approximately $470.4 million for fiscal year 2026, $288.7 million for fiscal year 2025, and $279.7 million for fiscal year 2024; each fiscal year ended April 30. The company’s filing says it has a history of losses, expects operating expenses to continue increasing, and cannot state whether or when it will achieve profitability. It also discusses customer concentration, sales-cycle timing, and difficulty forecasting results. Read the issuer’s fiscal 2026 Form 10-K for the dated disclosures.

Those facts show why a loss-making AI company may require sales, cash-burn, liquidity, and scenario analysis instead of a P/E comparison. They are facts about that issuer, not assumptions to apply automatically to every AI business. For any other company, use its own filings and dates.

A repeatable workflow for comparing an AI company

  1. Define the business. Record products, customers, revenue model, geography, and whether the company is software, hardware, infrastructure, services, or a mix.
  2. Collect comparable periods. Use the latest annual and quarterly filings; write down fiscal-year dates, currency, share count, and whether figures are reported or estimated.
  3. Map growth. Calculate multi-period revenue growth and identify organic, acquired, recurring, concentrated, or one-time components.
  4. Map profitability. Compare gross margin, operating margin, EBITDA where relevant, and free-cash-flow margin; explain the direction of each.
  5. Select matching multiples. Use P/E only with meaningful earnings, sales measures when earnings are negative, and EV/EBITDA only when EBITDA reflects the operating comparison you need.
  6. Choose peers deliberately. Document why each peer matches on business model, scale, growth, margins, capital structure, and geography.
  7. Build scenarios. For a DCF or forward multiple, model base, upside, and downside cases with explicit growth, margin, reinvestment, and discount-rate assumptions.
  8. Stress risk. Test customer loss, slower sales cycles, pricing pressure, higher compute or capital costs, financing needs, and dilution.
  9. Write the conclusion as a conditional statement. State what assumptions would have to hold for the valuation to make sense, rather than labeling the stock universally cheap or expensive.

Common mistakes to avoid

  • Using a universal cutoff. There is no defensible AI-wide P/E, P/S, or EV/Sales threshold established by these sources.
  • Comparing mismatched periods. A trailing multiple for one company and a forward multiple for another are not like-for-like.
  • Treating revenue as earnings. Sales growth does not demonstrate margin expansion or cash generation.
  • Calling EBITDA cash flow. Excluding capital expenditure and working capital can materially overstate cash available to investors.
  • Ignoring the balance sheet. Two businesses with the same operating multiple can expose shareholders to different debt, cash, and dilution risks.
  • Believing a precise DCF output. Small changes in long-term growth, margins, reinvestment, or discount rates can materially change present value.
  • Assuming the AI label is a valuation method. Analyze the disclosed economics and risks of the actual business.

Reader checklist

  • Have I identified the exact numerator, denominator, period, and forecast status of each multiple?
  • Are the peers genuinely comparable in business model, growth, margins, scale, and capital structure?
  • Is growth durable, recurring, and supported by customers rather than a single timing event?
  • Are margins improving, and does free cash flow support the accounting story after investment?
  • Can the company fund losses and planned investment without unacceptable leverage or dilution?
  • Have customer concentration, sales-cycle timing, technology dependence, and execution uncertainty been reflected in the comparison?
  • Does a DCF show sensitivity to the assumptions that matter most?
  • What specific assumptions make the valuation reasonable, and what evidence would invalidate them?
