AI can estimate a team’s chance of winning, forecast scoring, or track how a game’s odds change as play unfolds. It cannot make a sports result certain. There is no single accuracy rate for “AI sports predictions”: performance depends on the sport, the outcome being forecast, the data available, and how the model is tested.
What sports prediction models actually predict
“Predicting a game” can mean several different things. A model might estimate whether a team will win, assign a win probability, forecast a score, measure a team’s underlying strength, or estimate the value of a particular game state. These outputs are related, but they are not interchangeable. A strength rating summarizes performance across a broader context; it does not guarantee what will happen in one match.
Sports analytics is broader than choosing winners. It uses data to understand performance and game situations, and may also incorporate betting-market information. The right method depends on the sport’s rules, strategies, data collection, players, and role of chance, as Baumer, Matthews, and Nguyen explain in their 2023 overview of sports analytics (arXiv).

A typical forecasting process starts with historical schedules and results, then estimates team or player strength and uses those estimates to produce probabilities or other forecasts. Some models focus on pregame outcomes; others update win probability as the game state changes. The inputs and statistical choices vary by sport, and the data provide only an imperfect view of the processes that produced each result. A 2022 paper on sports forecasting discusses these limits and the use of simulation frameworks to analyze predictive models (Springer Nature).

Data that may feed a forecast
Depending on the sport and prediction target, a model may use past game results, game-state information, team or player ratings, and other sport-specific data. Betting-market data may also be considered in some forms of analysis. No single input list applies to every model, and a claimed data advantage is meaningful only if those inputs were actually available when the forecast was made.
How accurate are AI sports predictions?
There is no universal figure. A model’s reported accuracy must be read in context: which sport and outcome it covered, which games were included, what period was tested, and what metric was used. A percentage of correctly picked winners does not tell you whether the model’s probability estimates are trustworthy.

For example, a model that assigns 70% win probability to many games is well calibrated if roughly 70% of those forecasts come true over time. A model can pick winners often yet be poorly calibrated—its stated probabilities may not match actual frequencies. Accuracy and calibration answer different questions.

Can AI predict the winner of a game?
It can estimate a probability that a team or player will win, but that estimate is not a guarantee. An outcome remains uncertain even when a model has a useful edge in historical evaluation. Results from one sport should not be assumed to transfer to another: sports differ in their rules, strategies, data, and the influence of chance.
That distinction matters especially when predictions are connected to betting. In a 2023 NBA betting experiment, Walsh and Joshi reported average returns on investment of 110.42% for calibration-optimized systems and 2.98% for accuracy-optimized systems. Those are results from that particular experiment, not expected returns for readers or evidence of a general betting strategy (Walsh and Joshi, arXiv preprint, 2023). The tennis findings above also show why systematic predictions do not remove volatility or ensure profit.

How to evaluate a sports prediction claim
Before trusting a headline, app, or model performance claim, look for answers to these questions:
- What is the target? Is it a winner, a score, an in-game probability, or a team-strength rating?
- What data were used? Are the inputs relevant to the sport and target, and were they available before the forecast was made?
- How was performance measured? Does the claim report winner accuracy, probability calibration, or another metric? These measure different things.
- Was the test genuinely out of sample? A credible evaluation tests forecasts on games not used to build or tune the model, ideally in a future period.
- What are the sport, sample, and time period? A result without these details cannot support a broad claim about “AI” in sports.
- Does the source explain uncertainty? Probabilities describe likelihoods, not certainties; betting returns, where reported, can be volatile.
The practical rule is simple: judge a prediction by its defined target and its evidence on unseen games, not by the label “AI” or a single accuracy percentage.
Why smarter analytics still leave room for uncertainty
More data and more sophisticated models can help fans interpret a matchup, compare team strength, or follow changing probabilities during play. But the model’s output is an estimate built from limited observations, and a single game can depart from what was most likely. Treat forecasts as one analytical lens—not a result already decided.
