Choose an AI smart-home security system by matching each device to a specific job, confirming that it works with your hub and platform, and checking how it handles recordings and account access. A Matter label can help devices work across supported platforms, but it does not guarantee that every model exposes every feature in every app. And “AI” alone does not tell you what a camera detects or how recordings are handled.
Start with the security jobs you need covered
Build the system around the functions you need, rather than treating “smart security” as one interchangeable product category. A camera records a view; a doorbell camera covers an entry and supports doorbell functions; contact sensors report whether a door or window is open; motion sensors detect movement; locks control access; and a security panel can coordinate parts of a system. One device may combine functions, but confirm the exact model’s capabilities.
Amazon’s Works with Alexa requirements, last updated August 28, 2026, list cameras, doorbells, locks, garage-door openers, security panels, and contact and motion sensors as separate compatible-device categories. The controls required differ by category, so a platform listing does not mean every device offers the same controls.

Make a coverage list
- List the doors, windows, rooms, and outdoor areas you want to monitor.
- For each area, decide whether you need video, an open/closed alert, motion detection, access control, or more than one function.
- Decide who needs to receive alerts and whether anyone besides you should be able to view or administer cameras.
Check what “AI” means on the exact product
The cited compatibility standards and platform requirements do not define a general “AI security” feature set. Do not infer a particular detection capability, accuracy, or privacy practice from an AI label. Check the product’s feature list for the specific detection functions it offers, whether those functions require a subscription, and whether video or analysis is processed locally or sent to a cloud service. The available sources do not establish model-by-model AI capabilities or performance.

Match the device to your hub and smart-home platform
Matter is a connectivity standard, not a replacement for a smart-home platform. The Connectivity Standards Alliance (CSA) says Matter uses Bluetooth Low Energy for setup and Wi-Fi, Thread, and Ethernet for connectivity. Its supported device categories include bridges, controllers, locks, safety and security sensors, and other smart-home devices. Major platform providers support Matter, but support for a standard does not make every product feature available in every platform.
Verify the full device-to-platform path
- Check the exact product model’s Matter certification and the platform or app you plan to use.
- Confirm that the specific functions you want—such as alerts, camera controls, or recording settings—are supported in that platform, not merely that the device can connect.
- If you want to share a device between platforms, confirm that the product and platforms support the required multi-admin setup.
- For an older product, do not assume a software update will add Matter. The manufacturer decides whether an update is technically possible and whether to release one.
The CSA describes Matter’s native connectivity as Wi-Fi, Ethernet, and Thread. Zigbee and Z-Wave devices do not interoperate natively with Matter; they need a compatible bridge to participate in a Matter setup. A bridge may be a separate hub or built into another device, so check the bridge and device compatibility for the exact products involved.

What Matter 1.5 means for cameras
On November 20, 2025, the CSA announced Matter 1.5, which adds camera support. The standard defines capabilities including live video and audio, two-way communication, local and remote access, multi-stream configurations, pan-tilt-zoom controls, detection and privacy zones, and local or cloud storage for continuous or event-based recordings. The CSA’s announcement says: “Matter cameras support live video and audio streaming using established WebRTC technology, enabling two-way communication and both local and remote access via standard STUN and TURN protocols.”
These are capabilities defined by the standard, not a guarantee that a particular retail camera is certified, available, or supports every capability in every ecosystem. Check the exact model’s certification and feature list. Matter 1.5 also revises support for closures such as garage doors, gates, shades, and drapes, which may be relevant if a security routine needs to check whether a garage door or gate is closed.

Compare recording, access, and privacy controls
For each camera, establish where footage is stored, which recording modes are available, and who can access the stream. Matter 1.5 defines options for local and cloud storage and for continuous or event-based recordings, but products can implement the standard differently. Confirm the actual options in the model and app you are considering.
- Storage: Check whether recordings are stored locally, in the cloud, or through a choice of both, and whether local recording needs a separate hub or storage device.
- Recording mode: Confirm whether you can record continuously, only on events, or use both modes.
- Remote access: Find out whether live viewing works away from home and whether you can disable remote viewing if you prefer.
- Account permissions: Check who can view live video, review recordings, change settings, or invite other users.
- Privacy zones: If the camera supports them, set zones to exclude areas you do not want recorded. Verify that the feature is available in your chosen app and on the exact model.
Secure the cameras and the accounts that control them
The FTC recommends treating camera security as both a device and household-network issue. Before buying, look for information about encryption. After setup, use a strong router password, a firewall, current router software, and WPA3 or WPA2 Wi-Fi encryption. Consider putting cameras on a separate network from other household devices.

- HDD Storage and Remote Playback – Including a pre-installed 2TB HDD, videos can be recorded and stored for ten days without overwriting occurring. Users can add one additional external 8TB HDD via the camera’s e-SATA port. With the free Reolink app, all videos can be played back through your smart device anywhere, anytime.
- Replace default credentials with a unique, strong password; do not reuse a password from another account.
- Enable two-factor authentication on cloud accounts when available.
- Install firmware and app updates as they become available.
- Review account-sharing and remote-viewing permissions, and remove access that is no longer needed.
These safeguards reduce avoidable exposure; they do not make a camera or network invulnerable. Consider where a camera points, who has account access, and whether footage leaves the home when deciding whether a feature is appropriate.
