A prompt tells an AI video tool what you want; a workflow makes the result repeatable. For a short video, that means capturing the brief, planning shots, preparing prompts and references, generating clips, reviewing alternatives, and assembling the edit. Skills and workflows do not replace prompts—they organize the steps around them so you can control, revise, and reuse the process.
What a workflow adds to an AI video prompt
A standalone prompt can describe a scene, but it does not necessarily account for missing brief details, shot boundaries, alternate generations, editing, or export checks. A reusable workflow encodes those decisions and links the stages together. Depending on the tool, that may mean a visual node pipeline, a task-oriented agent skill, a multi-shot recipe, or an editor timeline.
For example, Runway describes Workflows as a node-based approach to media generation. Its documented nodes include inputs, media models, language-model steps that can modify prompts, and utilities for operations such as stitching video or adding and extracting audio. Its starter tutorial connects text inputs to image generation and then image-to-video generation; users can run individual nodes or the whole workflow and compare or restore outputs. A skill is the task-specific procedure within that broader idea: it can guide an agent through a request such as making a vertical reel from an image or building an explainer with voiceover. Runway’s Agent documentation describes skills, a timeline editor, and the option to provide a simple initial sentence and optional assets. These are product examples, not evidence that one approach produces better video than another. Runway’s Agent guide also cautions that generations can make mistakes and may need iteration.

How to build the workflow

Define the brief and deliverable
Record the subject, intended audience, destination platform, aspect ratio, target duration, style, and any constraints as separate inputs. Keep a natural-language prompt as the creative starting point, but have the workflow ask for missing details or pass structured choices to later stages. This makes it easier to change one requirement without rewriting the whole request.

Plan the shots
Break the idea into short units, each with one clear action, framing, and visual direction. That gives you places to revise and compare rather than treating the entire video as one indivisible generation. Runway’s documented Multi-Shot recipe can either decompose a story prompt or accept an ordered list of 3–5 shots; that recipe offers total durations of 5, 10, or 15 seconds. These are options for that recipe, not universal limits for AI video. Runway’s Multi-Shot guide explains its setup.

Prepare the prompt for the generation mode
For text-to-video, describe what is visible and how it moves. For image-to-video, treat the image as the anchor for composition and style, then use the text prompt to specify motion, camera movement, and timing. Runway recommends beginning simply and adding prompt elements iteratively; its prompting guide also documents Gen-4 image-to-video clips of 5 or 10 seconds. In a node workflow, a language-model step can modify a prompt according to creative intent, while the original brief remains available as context.

Generate clips and keep alternatives
Connect the planned text or image inputs to the appropriate generation nodes. Save or compare variations before moving on; a promising result may need a different take, while an earlier output may be the better fit. The Runway starter workflow demonstrates running nodes separately as well as running the complete chain, with options to inspect and restore outputs.

Review, revise, and assemble
Check each clip against the brief and shot plan, then revise the prompt, reference, or shot as needed. Once the clips work individually, assemble them and address pacing, continuity, transitions, and audio. Runway’s workflow utilities document stitching clips and adding or extracting audio. OpenAI’s Sora prompting guide says shorter clips generally follow instructions more reliably and gives stitching two 4-second clips in editing rather than generating one 8-second clip as an example. That is guidance in the Sora guide, not a guarantee for every model or project. OpenAI’s Sora 2 Prompting Guide provides the example.

Check the exported deliverable
Before publishing, watch the actual export. Check pacing, shot continuity, audio, captions, aspect ratio, and whether the file fits the destination platform. These are practical editorial checks across a generation-and-editing workflow, not a vendor-prescribed checklist.

Choose a workflow shape that fits the task
The main options solve different orchestration problems. The documentation establishes capabilities, but does not provide a neutral quality, reliability, production-time, or total-cost comparison.

- Task-oriented agent skill: Useful when a task can be expressed as an instruction and the agent can guide the work through generation and a timeline editor. Runway documents skills and warns that results may require iteration.
- Multi-shot recipe: Useful when shot order and duration need to be explicit. Runway’s recipe accepts a story prompt or a custom ordered list of 3–5 shots, with the recipe’s documented total-duration options of 5, 10, or 15 seconds.
- Timeline-centered editor workflow: Useful when clip placement and assembly are central. Adobe’s Firefly instructions, last updated June 16, 2026, describe selecting Runway Gen-4.5, choosing a 5-, 8-, or 10-second duration, and placing the generated clip on the timeline. That configuration specifies default 720p widescreen output; do not assume it produces portrait video. Adobe’s third-party video model instructions describe this editor flow.
When evaluating tools for a particular project, compare how much work can be reused or automated, how precisely you can control shot boundaries and prompts, which text and media inputs are supported, whether you can review and revise outputs, which duration and output settings are available, and the usage cost. The cited documentation describes several feature differences, but does not establish a complete current cost comparison or a vendor-independent ranking.
Why short shots make iteration easier
A short video is easier to manage when its shots are separate creative units. If one action or camera move is wrong, you can focus revision on that segment instead of rebuilding the whole sequence. This also makes the brief concrete: each shot can have its own action, framing, reference, and motion prompt.
That approach aligns with OpenAI’s guidance that shorter clips generally follow instructions more reliably, while Runway’s Multi-Shot recipe offers a way to decompose a story or supply an ordered shot list. Neither source proves that short shots always look better; use the structure to improve control and make revisions more targeted.
What to keep in the human review loop
Automation can carry work through a sequence, but the creator still needs to judge whether each result serves the brief. Review for:
- Whether the action and subject match the shot description.
- Whether framing and movement fit the intended style.
- Whether adjacent shots feel continuous when assembled.
- Whether audio and captions are present, intelligible, and correctly timed.
- Whether pacing, aspect ratio, and export settings suit the destination.
Preserve useful alternatives and make revisions deliberately. An agent or workflow can reduce repeated setup, but it cannot remove the need to inspect variable generations and decide which version belongs in the final edit.
