Traditional checkout automation is usually the safer default when it fills a transaction you have already chosen and leaves the final review and approval to you. An AI shopping agent can search, compare, select products and complete payment, which gives it more authority—and more opportunities to misunderstand your intent, follow malicious instructions hidden in shopping content, or make an unintended purchase.
That is a risk-based conclusion, not a measured head-to-head result. No controlled, like-for-like data currently establishes lower fraud, loss, error or privacy rates for one approach. Safety depends on the permissions, payment controls, review steps and accountability around the particular implementation.
What the two checkout approaches actually do
Traditional checkout automation
Traditional automation normally starts after you have selected a specific item. A browser feature, script or accessibility tool may fill your name, address and card fields, apply a saved preference, or submit a prepared order. Its decision scope is comparatively narrow: it automates mechanics while you retain product choice and, ideally, final authorization.

That does not make it automatically secure. A compromised browser extension, stolen session or incorrectly mapped field can still expose data or submit the wrong order. The important safety property is limited delegated authority, not the word “automation.”

AI shopping agents
An agent can perform a longer chain: interpret a request, discover products, compare sellers, read reviews, select an item, enter account details and place an order. Some systems stop at recommendations; others can act through checkout with stored credentials or a payment token. The more of that chain the agent controls, the more consequential decisions occur without a person making each one.
The Bank for International Settlements (BIS) describes assisted commerce as a likely transition toward more autonomous, agent-delegated purchasing. It identifies a higher risk of unintended purchases when authority is delegated and says stronger trust mechanisms and guardrails are needed.
Which is safer for a consumer?
Use traditional automation when you have already chosen the exact product, seller and quantity and can inspect the final order yourself. Consider an AI agent only when its authority is narrowly bounded and the service gives you a clear, transaction-specific approval step.
An agent should not receive an open-ended instruction such as “buy whatever is best” while also holding unrestricted access to your account and payment method. A safer design converts your request into explicit constraints—such as merchant, product type, maximum total, quantity and delivery deadline—and verifies those constraints against the final order.
The evidence available today supports this decision framework, but not a universal ranking of products. The sources do not provide controlled incident rates comparing checkout automation with delegated agents, so claims that one category is categorically safe or unsafe go beyond the evidence.

Compare the risks before you delegate

Why prompt injection becomes a payment problem
Prompt injection is not only a chatbot-quality issue. The Payment Card Industry Security Standards Council (PCI SSC) said in guidance dated 11 September 2025 that malicious input can attempt to make an AI system take privileged actions, disclose sensitive information or change its behavior, including performing fraudulent payments.
Shopping content is an attractive place to hide such input. A product description, review, support message or page element could contain text that an agent interprets as an instruction rather than untrusted data. The agent might be urged to change the product, reveal a credential, bypass a confirmation or send payment to a different destination.
AP2, a payment protocol security model, assumes prompt injection cannot currently be prevented outright and treats agents themselves as potential attackers. Its threat model includes manipulated checkouts, theft of payment credentials, malicious product discovery and double spending. That assumption does not prove that every commercial agent is compromised; it means the architecture should limit what a compromised or manipulated agent can do.
Controls that reduce injection impact
- Keep retrieved product text separate from commands that authorize payment.
- Validate every proposed action against the user’s original constraints and the merchant’s trusted checkout data.
- Filter outputs and commands before they reach account, shipping or payment systems.
- Require a fresh approval for changes to item, seller, quantity, total or delivery terms.
- Log the input, decision, authorization and final receipt so an incident can be reconstructed.
Payment credentials should be transaction-bound
PCI SSC recommends use-case-specific, least-privilege credentials that can be tracked and revoked. An agent should not receive a general-purpose card number or an account token with broader powers than the purchase requires.
AP2 specifies a stronger sequence: a payment credential or token should be released to the merchant only after the system receives and verifies a final Payment Mandate. The mandate binds the payment authority to that transaction. In practical terms, the payment system should know which merchant, amount, currency, item or other constraints were approved before releasing the ability to charge.

Questions to ask about an agent’s payment design
- Does the agent ever see the underlying card number, or does it use a scoped token?
- Can the token be limited to one merchant, one order and one amount?
- Is it automatically revoked or expired after the transaction?
- Can the user see the final mandate before payment credentials are released?
- Are failed, changed or duplicate requests blocked rather than silently retried?
These are design principles and protocol requirements, not proof that a named service has implemented them. Check the provider’s technical and privacy documentation before enabling autonomous payment.
Use a safer approval workflow
If you decide to use an agent, configure it as a constrained assistant rather than an unrestricted buyer. The following workflow keeps the irreversible step under your control.
- Define the request precisely. State the product category or exact model, acceptable condition, quantity, delivery location, deadline and maximum all-in price, including tax and shipping.
- Set merchant and category limits. Allow only approved merchants or domains when the service supports that control. Exclude marketplaces, international sellers or subscription products unless you intentionally need them.
- Use a transaction-specific payment method. Prefer a scoped token or virtual account with a low limit and expiration. Do not grant broad account access merely to save a few checkout clicks.
- Require a final proposal. The agent should show the exact item, seller, stock status, quantity, subtotal, shipping, tax, total, delivery date, recurring charges, return terms and any substitutions.
- Verify independently. Open the merchant’s trusted checkout or order page, check the destination and total, and make sure the receipt matches the proposal.
- Approve once. Use an explicit confirmation for the final mandate. Do not treat a conversational “sounds good” as authorization unless the service clearly identifies the precise transaction being approved.
- Monitor the result. Save the receipt, watch the payment account for the expected amount and cancel or revoke the token if the order changes.
Privacy: minimize what the agent can learn
Shopping agents can process more than payment data. A request may reveal health interests, household composition, income-related constraints, location, travel plans or other sensitive preferences. AP2 calls for selective disclosure and data minimization. PCI SSC similarly advises not giving an AI system access to data and systems it does not need.
A practical data-minimization checklist
- Provide the delivery address only when the selected merchant requires it.
- Use a separate shopping profile instead of granting access to all email, files, contacts and calendars.
- Disable retention or model-training use where the provider offers that choice.
- Check whether prompts, product searches, receipts and failed attempts are stored and for how long.
- Limit account permissions to read-only discovery until the final purchase step.
- Remove access and rotate credentials when you stop using the agent.
Selective disclosure does not guarantee privacy. Exact collection, retention and sharing practices vary by provider and must be verified in that provider’s disclosures.
How scams can exploit agentic shopping
Visa’s threat analysis describes a fraudulent storefront that appears legitimate while an agent uses stored credentials, as well as conversational scam agents. These are threat examples from a payment network with a commercial interest in agentic commerce, not measurements of how often such incidents occur.

The risk is different from a conventional phishing page because an agent may be optimized to complete a task quickly. A convincing product page, altered search result or fake support conversation can influence the agent’s selection before you see the final order. Require the agent to use verified merchant identity, display the destination and pause when a page requests unusual credentials, a gift-card payment, a changed shipping address or an unexpected recurring charge.
What payment-network initiatives do—and do not—prove
Visa’s Trusted Agent Protocol announcement describes agent-specific cryptographic signatures and fields for agent intent, consumer recognition and optional payment information. The announcement says the initial specifications applied to the Visa network in that phase and that work toward broader standards alignment was underway. It should not be read as evidence of universal adoption across merchants, banks or agents.
Protocol support can improve authentication and traceability, but it does not replace user constraints, final-order review or dispute processes. A cryptographically identified agent can still be authorized to do too much if the underlying mandate is overly broad.

Visa’s 14 October 2025 announcement, citing Adobe Data Insights for August 2025, reported a more than 4,700% year-over-year increase in AI-driven traffic to U.S. retail websites. That is a traffic figure, not a purchase count, loss rate or security incident rate.
The same announcement said 85% of shoppers who had used AI for shopping reported an improved experience. The cited material does not provide enough survey-method detail to generalize that result to all shoppers.

Visa also reported that Visa PERC observed more than a 450% increase in dark-web community posts mentioning “AI Agent” over the prior six months compared with the previous six months. That counts underground-channel mentions; it is not a 450% increase in fraud or attacks.
None of these figures establishes whether traditional automation or autonomous agents produce fewer unauthorized purchases, privacy harms or payment losses.
Business responsibility and consumer law
The UK Competition and Markets Authority (CMA) guidance published 9 March 2026 says a business remains responsible for consumer-law compliance when it uses an AI agent, including a third-party agent. The guidance recommends clear disclosure when AI use could surprise or mislead customers, training agents to respect consumer rights and obtain required consent, testing, regular monitoring, human oversight and rapid correction when behavior causes problems.

The CMA states that enforcement can include fines of up to 10% of worldwide turnover and possible consumer compensation. Those consequences are specific to the UK guidance and law; they are not universal penalties in every jurisdiction.
For consumers, the practical lesson is to identify the contracting merchant, preserve the order record and ask the agent provider how disputes and unauthorized actions are handled. BIS identifies authentication, liability, fraud and recording buyer intent as unresolved challenges in agentic commerce.
Controls for merchants and platform operators
Organizations deploying an agent should treat it as a privileged system, not merely a conversational interface.
- Map authority. Document every tool the agent can call, the data each tool receives and the maximum financial consequence.
- Enforce least privilege. Separate discovery, cart creation, checkout and payment authorization into different permissions.
- Validate at the boundary. Recheck merchant, amount, currency, item and delivery terms immediately before payment.
- Protect receipts. AP2 calls for safeguards against tampering by the agent; store an integrity-protected record of the approved mandate and final receipt.
- Build revocation. Credentials must be trackable and quickly revocable, with automatic expiry for one-time purchases.
- Test adversarially. Include prompt injection, malicious product data, duplicate charges, changed totals, counterfeit merchants and replayed mandates in testing.
- Plan incidents. PCI SSC recommends considering possible agent misuse in incident-response planning, including credential rotation, transaction cancellation and customer notification.
- Keep humans for high impact. Require review for expensive, regulated, recurring, age-restricted or unusual purchases.
When traditional automation is the better choice
- You already know the exact product and merchant.
- The order is expensive, recurring, regulated or difficult to return.
- The automation tool can fill fields but cannot choose products or alter the cart.
- You want the merchant’s normal fraud and dispute process to see a conventional customer checkout.
- The agent provider cannot explain its credential scope, retention or approval controls.
When a constrained agent may be reasonable
- You need help comparing many options and can state objective limits.
- The service supports merchant, amount, quantity and category constraints.
- The final proposal is displayed before any payment credential is released.
- Payment uses a revocable, transaction-bound token rather than unrestricted credentials.
- You can review receipts and quickly cancel or dispute an incorrect order.
Warning signs that should stop an automatic purchase
- The agent cannot show the exact seller, total or recurring terms.
- A product page tells the agent to ignore your instructions or reveal system data.
- The merchant, currency, shipping address or total changes after approval.
- The service asks for a full card number, account password or unrelated mailbox access.
- There is no clear audit trail, revocation method or support route for an unauthorized charge.
- The agent repeatedly retries a failed payment or proposes a substitute without a new approval.
Bottom line for choosing safely
For most consumers today, traditional checkout automation with a human-selected order and visible final approval has the smaller risk surface. An AI shopping agent can be useful when it is limited to discovery or comparison, or when a robust payment protocol enforces a narrow mandate and transaction-bound credentials. The decisive question is not whether a product calls itself an agent or automation; it is how much authority it receives, what untrusted content it can interpret, when payment access is released and whether you can stop and review the action.
