AI shopping agents assemble answers from structured product feeds, merchant websites, third-party metadata, user intent, and policy signals. For shoppers, that means a useful shortlist—not a guaranteed lowest price, verified review verdict, or permanent stock promise. For merchants, visibility starts with a complete, accurate catalog: titles, descriptions, images, variants, price, availability, shipping, returns, ratings, and review counts.
This guide explains how the major systems obtain product information, why prices and rankings can differ, what reviews actually mean, and how protocols such as Google’s Universal Commerce Protocol (UCP) connect discovery to carts and checkout.
What an AI shopping agent does
An AI shopping agent translates a conversational request into product retrieval, filtering, comparison, and—where supported—transaction actions. A shopper might describe a use case instead of entering a keyword, then ask the agent to compare options, find a deal, check a specification, or build a cart.

- Structured catalog feeds supplied by merchants or commerce platforms.
- Product and policy information published on merchant websites.
- Public metadata, including ratings and review text.
- The shopper’s intent, constraints, location, and conversation context.
- Safety, quality, availability, and policy checks.
These inputs are interpreted probabilistically. A result can be relevant without being the cheapest, and a price can be recently retrieved without remaining valid through checkout. The practical rule is to treat an agent’s answer as decision support and verify final price, shipping, taxes, stock, returns, and seller identity on the merchant’s checkout page.

How product data gets into AI shopping systems
Structured feeds are the foundation
OpenAI’s Agentic Commerce documentation describes product feeds as structured data that lets ChatGPT index items and understand their attributes. Required fields support accurate display of core information such as price and availability. Recommended attributes—including rich media, reviews, and performance signals—can improve relevance, ranking, and trust.
The product schema includes machine-readable fields such as review_count, store_star_rating, shipping price, and country configuration. A feed is not a ranking guarantee: it gives the system reliable facts to work with, while relevance, quality, policy, and user intent still affect which products appear.
Google’s catalog layer
Google Merchant Center remains the central hub for product data used across Google shopping surfaces. Google’s Shopping Graph announcement in 2025 described 50 billion product listings, with 2 billion listings updated every hour. Those figures describe Google’s system and should not be treated as a measurement of every AI shopping service.

Google’s UCP adds a protocol layer between an agent and a participating retailer. Its Catalog capability is designed to let an agent request selected real-time details—such as variants, inventory, and pricing—when the retailer exposes them. This is different from assuming that every product answer is a live database query.

Amazon’s conversational shopping system
Amazon unified Rufus and Alexa+ as Alexa for Shopping. Amazon says Rufus was used by more than 300 million customers in 2025. Alexa for Shopping supports natural-language questions, shopping guides, product and category insights, dynamic comparisons, up to one year of price history, deal finding, cart building, and routine purchases.
What a merchant should put in a product feed
Use one canonical catalog as the source of truth, then map it to each channel’s schema. Stable identifiers are essential: keep product and variant IDs consistent when titles, prices, or inventory change.
- Define the item. Supply a precise title, useful description, brand or maker identity, product category, images, and variant attributes such as size, color, or capacity.
- Represent the offer. Include currency, country, price, sale price where applicable, seller identity, and the exact variant to which each value applies.
- Synchronize availability. Update stock status and quantities from the same inventory system that controls checkout. Remove discontinued variants rather than leaving stale listings active.
- Publish fulfillment terms. Provide shipping price, delivery information, return rules, and country coverage. Shipping changes can affect the usefulness of an apparently attractive item price.
- Add reputation fields. Where supported, provide review count and store star rating. Keep aggregation methods transparent and do not manufacture or inflate ratings.
- Validate continuously. Monitor feed errors, rejected attributes, policy disapprovals, broken image URLs, currency mismatches, and sudden availability changes.
OpenAI states that merchants are responsible for lawful, policy-compliant product content. Violating products or sellers may be removed or banned, so feed completeness cannot compensate for prohibited claims or unsafe goods.

They are useful snapshots, not unconditional guarantees. OpenAI’s shopping guidance says displayed prices come from third-party providers. The first merchant shown may not have the lowest price, and a merchant’s later price or shipping change can take time to appear.

A supported UCP Catalog connection is designed for an agent to retrieve current variants, inventory, and pricing from the retailer’s catalog. That improves freshness where implemented, but it still does not remove checkout-dependent variables such as taxes, shipping destination, promotions, payment method, or an item selling out between retrieval and purchase.
When presenting a price in an article, store interface, or internal report, label it as a time-bound feed or catalog value. A responsible shopping workflow is:
- Ask the agent to identify the exact seller, variant, currency, and stated availability.
- Open the merchant’s product page and confirm the same variant is selected.
- Recheck shipping cost, delivery estimate, taxes, coupons, membership pricing, and return terms.
- Review the final order total immediately before payment.
How AI systems use reviews and ratings
ChatGPT may create simplified product titles and summarize public reviews. OpenAI says these summaries are model-generated and that reviews and ratings are not verified by OpenAI. A summary can highlight recurring likes and dislikes, but it is not a substitute for reading original reviews or checking whether the reviewers purchased the specific variant.
Machine-readable fields such as review_count and store_star_rating give an agent measurable signals. They do not establish that every review is genuine, current, independent, or applicable to the item being compared. Merchants should:

- Keep counts and average ratings synchronized with the review system.
- Explain whether ratings combine variants, products, stores, or countries.
- Separate verified review facts from marketing language and generated interpretation.
- Avoid unsupported claims such as “best rated” unless the comparison set and measurement are clearly defined.
Why one merchant appears before another
OpenAI lists several factors that can affect which products ChatGPT surfaces:
- Relevance to the shopper’s stated intent and constraints.
- Availability for the requested location or timing.
- Price and the overall value implied by the offer.
- Product and seller quality signals.
- Whether the merchant is the maker or primary seller.
- Structured metadata, model context, and safety policies.
OpenAI says product results are selected independently by ChatGPT and are not ads or influenced by OpenAI partnerships. Sponsored or paid placements are therefore a separate concept from the organic product-selection process described in that guidance. Labels and the set of options can also change when Instant Checkout is available.
Ranking behavior evolves. Trying to reverse-engineer one fixed ordering is less durable than improving catalog accuracy, fulfillment reliability, seller identity, and policy compliance.

Google’s Universal Commerce Protocol is an open protocol for agent-to-merchant communication. Its scope extends beyond product discovery to the actions that make an agent useful after it finds an item:
- Discovery: exchange information about a merchant and its offerings.
- Catalog: retrieve selected real-time variants, inventory, and prices where the retailer supports the capability.
- Cart: create or modify a cart. In Google’s March 19, 2026 update, Google described adding multiple items through the Cart capability.
- Identity linking: connect an approved customer identity so benefits such as loyalty pricing or free shipping can be applied.
- Checkout: pass the order through a supported purchase flow.
- Post-purchase support: enable order status, changes, and service interactions after payment.
Google said Commerce Inc, Salesforce, and Stripe were implementing UCP in the future. Availability, merchant eligibility, and supported capabilities remain rollout-dependent; an announcement does not mean every retailer can activate every function in every market.

Google Business Agent and merchant information
Google Business Agent uses information from a company website together with Merchant Center product and brand data to answer customer questions. Google said conversational Business Agent availability began in 2025 in the United States, Canada, Australia, and India. Geographic access and product capabilities can change, so merchants should check the current eligibility requirements for their market.
Because the agent may combine website and feed information, inconsistencies are risky. A different return period on the website, a stale stock value in the feed, and a changed shipping promise can produce a confusing answer even when each source looks plausible in isolation.

Amazon Alexa for Shopping: discovery, purchase, and advertising
Alexa for Shopping combines conversational discovery with comparisons and transaction tools. Amazon documents shopping guides, category insights, dynamic comparisons, price history covering up to one year, deal finding, cart building, and routine purchases. The system can move from a question to a completed transaction where the account, item, location, and purchase flow are eligible.
Amazon also documents commercial formats including Sponsored Products, Sponsored Brands prompts, conversational ads, and closed-loop measurement. Amazon Ads described conversational advertising and commerce completion as “not a future state; it’s a current state” in a June 11, 2026 statement. Advertisers should verify account eligibility, geography, and the currently supported format before planning a campaign. Paid prompts should not be confused with the independent organic-selection statements made about ChatGPT product results.

A practical merchant operating plan
Start with data governance
Assign ownership for every catalog field and define how quickly each one must update. Price and inventory need a tighter synchronization window than long-form descriptions. Keep country, currency, shipping zone, and return-policy data explicit rather than inferred.
Test the customer journey, not only the feed
Run conversations that reflect real shoppers: ambiguous product names, variant changes, location-specific delivery, loyalty pricing, out-of-stock items, and multi-item carts. Check whether the agent identifies the right seller and whether the final checkout total matches the catalog promise.

Measure the whole funnel
Track feed approval, impressions, product-detail visits, add-to-cart events, checkout starts, completed orders, cancellations, returns, and support contacts. For paid conversational formats, use the platform’s documented closed-loop measurement where available. A high impression count with frequent stock failures is not healthy visibility.
Protect against stale or misleading answers
Alert on sudden differences between the canonical catalog, Merchant Center, website, and checkout. Remove unsupported superlatives, correct review counts, and investigate policy disapprovals promptly. If a product is temporarily unavailable, communicate a realistic restock state instead of leaving an outdated “in stock” value exposed.
