Measure AI search visibility by running a consistent set of customer prompts across selected answer engines, then calculating how often your brand appears in completed answers. Keep the full answers and visible citations, and report results by engine as well as overall. A 25-prompt, six-engine run produces 150 answers—but that is a practical example, not a statistically validated sample size.

What AI search visibility measures

AI search visibility is the share of sampled AI-generated answers that mention a brand. It is an operational metric: it describes what happened in a defined set of prompts, engines, locations and runs. It is not a universal ranking or a measure of every customer’s searches.

For example, if you run 25 prompts on six engines, you have 150 answers to review. If the brand appears in 90, the visibility rate is 90 ÷ 150 = 60%. Those figures are a hypothetical illustration, not results from a real campaign or proof that 150 answers are enough to represent a market.

Build a prompt set that reflects real buying questions

Start with the customer topics you want to be visible for, then express them as natural questions. Include different intents so the set tests more than one kind of answer:

  • Informational: questions about options, features or how a category works.
  • Comparison: questions such as “top CRM for small agencies.”
  • Problem-solving: questions such as “who should I call for a sparking outlet at night.”
  • Recommendation: questions such as “best plumber in Phoenix” or “best emergency electrician near me.”

These are examples of prompt wording, not evidence about search frequency. A starting set of 20–30 prompts is a manageable way to establish a baseline; use the same core set for later runs. Include unbranded questions as well as branded ones. A set made only of prompts that name your business measures a different, narrower question.

Choose engines, location and settings consistently

Select the engines relevant to your audience and record the exact set used. The illustrative six-engine setup in the TechBullion method comprises ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity, Claude, Grok and Google AI Mode. Products and capabilities change, so treat this as that article’s example list rather than a timeless coverage standard.

Set a target country or locale and keep it consistent. Local recommendations may change with location. Also record any engine or configuration changes between runs; otherwise, a change in the results may reflect a changed setup rather than changed visibility.

Run and record each prompt

  1. Define a mention. Decide whether a mention requires the exact brand name, whether product names count, and how you will handle misspellings or ambiguous references. Apply the same rule to every answer.
  2. Run the fixed prompts. Submit each prompt to each selected engine using the recorded locale and settings.
  3. Save the evidence. For every run, record the prompt, date, engine, full answer and visible citations. Note brand and competitor mentions and the context in which each appears.
  4. Review sentiment and placement. Record whether the answer recommends the brand, describes it neutrally or negatively, or presents it only as a fallback. Keep the judgment rule consistent; sentiment scoring is subjective unless you define a rubric.
  5. Repeat on a schedule. Compare later runs against the baseline using the same prompt set and settings. A monthly report can reveal movement, while sustained change over a quarter is more useful than treating a small month-to-month swing as a settled trend.

Report five measures, not just one percentage

Overall visibility rate

Divide the number of completed answers that mention the brand by the total number of completed answers in the run. Show the numerator and denominator beside the percentage. If some prompts fail or are omitted, state how they were handled rather than silently changing the denominator.

Engine-level visibility and share of voice

Break results out by engine. An overall average can hide substantial differences between engines. If you compare your visibility with competitors, disclose which competitors you included and how you calculated the comparison; the measure depends on those choices.

Mention context and sentiment

A raw mention count cannot tell whether an answer endorses the brand, criticizes it or names it as a backup. Summarize the role the brand plays in the answer. If using a sentiment score, document the categories and rules rather than presenting an undefined score as objective.

Cited sources

Save the sources an engine displays and note which ones appear in competitor answers when your brand is absent. A displayed citation shows a linked source in that answer; on its own, it does not prove that the source caused the engine’s response.

Change from the baseline

Compare like with like: the same core prompts, engines, locale, settings and counting rules. Put any changes next to the results. Prompt wording, engine, timing and location can all affect answers, so a single screenshot or run is only one observation.

What the 25-by-six example can—and cannot—tell you

The arithmetic is straightforward: 25 prompts multiplied by six engines equals 150 answers in one run. In the hypothetical calculation, 90 mentions divided by 150 answers equals 60% visibility. The calculation demonstrates how to express the metric; it is not observed campaign data, a market-wide estimate or evidence of a known confidence interval.

Adding full-answer review, citation logging, competitor counts and sentiment assessment increases the work beyond counting mentions. Automation can help rerun prompts and retain responses, but it does not by itself make the sample representative or guarantee that the captured data is accurate.

Where Google Search Console fits

Google Search Central says established SEO best practices remain relevant to Google’s generative AI features, including AI Overviews and AI Mode. It also recommends using Search Console’s Generative AI performance report to understand how content performs in Google’s generative AI features. That report concerns Google surfaces; it is not a cross-engine count of visibility in other assistants.

Google Search Central cautions: “Be wary of third-party tools that promise ranking success or claim to use ‘internal’ Google metrics.” This is a warning against unsupported claims of privileged Google data, not a claim that every third-party monitoring workflow is useless. A vendor can help organize sampled observations, but it does not thereby gain access to Google’s internal ranking or AI-system data.

How to assess a monitoring tool

If you use software instead of tracking runs manually, judge whether it supports the method you need. Check its engine coverage, repeatability and sample handling; whether it preserves full answer text; whether it exposes competitor mentions and citations; and whether suggested actions can be traced to observed gaps. These are evaluation criteria, not guarantees about any particular product’s current capabilities.

  • Can you keep a stable prompt set and see when prompts or settings change?
  • Can you inspect the original answer rather than only a score?
  • Does it identify the engine, locale and run date for each observation?
  • Can you verify the displayed citations and the rules behind sentiment or competitor metrics?
  • Does the reporting distinguish observed data from recommendations or estimates?

Interpret the results as a sample

Fixed prompts make repeated measurements more comparable, but they do not eliminate variation in generated answers. Report the exact prompts, engines, locale, timing, configuration and counting rules behind a result. Treat movement cautiously when the sample or setup is small or has changed, and do not present the percentage as a universal rank or a census of customer queries.
