AI-powered search makes it more important to keep an organization’s identity and facts clear, consistent, and connected across its website. That is an operational shift in emphasis—not a replacement for SEO. Google says its AI search features still rely on foundational SEO and useful content, and structured data is not a shortcut to appearing in an AI answer.
Is SEO changing because of AI Overviews?
For Google Search, the official guidance is continuity: “From Google Search’s perspective, optimizing for generative AI search is optimizing for the search experience, and thus still SEO.” Google recommends foundational SEO practices and unique, useful content rather than a separate AI-specific rulebook. Google’s guidance on AI features and its guide to optimizing for generative AI features describe Google Search, not every answer engine.
The shift is better understood as a change in operational emphasis. In an answer-oriented interface, it helps to make it easy to identify who is responsible for a page, what its facts mean, and how it relates to other authoritative pages. That makes entity governance and structured content useful parts of a sound SEO operation, but the official guidance does not establish them as independent ranking factors or prove that they increase citations.

Eligibility is not inclusion
Google says a page must be indexed and eligible to appear with a snippet in Search to qualify as a supporting link in AI Overviews or AI Mode. Eligibility does not guarantee crawling, indexing, or serving. Google also says these features may use query fan-out and different models or techniques, so there is no assured path from a particular markup change to an AI result.

Does schema markup help with AI search?
Schema.org is a vocabulary for describing things and their properties. Structured data is an implementation of that vocabulary on a page; governance is the ongoing work of keeping the underlying names, relationships, and facts accurate. These are related, but not interchangeable.
Google says no special schema.org markup is required for generative AI search. Correct structured data can still support broader SEO and eligibility for supported rich results. It should be treated as a way to describe a page accurately and qualify for applicable search features—not as a switch that makes an AI system cite the page. Google’s General Structured Data Guidelines require markup to be accurate and relevant to visible page content; valid syntax alone does not guarantee a rich result.

What entity governance means in practice
Entity governance is an editorial and technical operating practice, not a separately mandated Google ranking factor. It means deciding how the organization and its important facts are represented, then keeping those representations aligned across pages and structured data.
- Use a consistent canonical organization name and URL, while documenting genuine alternate names.
- Choose a suitable, specific Organization type and provide accurate applicable details, such as a logo or real-world presence.
- Use
sameAsfor genuine external pages that provide information about the organization. - Ensure machine-readable assertions agree with what a reader can see on the page.
Google’s Organization structured data guidance describes details such as name, alternateName, URL, logo, and sameAs. It is unnecessary to repeat Organization data on every URL; use the appropriate page, such as the home or about page.

How do I get my content cited by AI search?
There is no guaranteed method. For Google AI Overviews and AI Mode, the practical starting point is to make pages crawlable, indexable, useful, and eligible for a Search snippet. Google states that it does not guarantee inclusion in those features. Advice about Google should not be assumed to describe every other AI search product.
Prioritize the foundations
- Allow crawling and indexing, and make important information available as text rather than only in an inaccessible format.
- Use clear internal links so people and search systems can discover related pages.
- Publish original, useful information that directly serves the reader; keep it current when its facts change.
- Maintain a good page experience and accurate business profile information where relevant.
These practices align with Google’s Search Essentials and its guidance on generative AI content. They do not promise a citation.
Keep structured data faithful to the page
Mark up only information that the page actually describes and that users can see. Hidden, misleading, or outdated assertions undermine the purpose of structured data and can violate Google’s guidelines. Validate markup for technical errors, then separately check that the content and feature requirements are met. An automated validator can identify some implementation problems; it cannot establish every quality or policy requirement.

How to put entity governance into operation
- Set a canonical identity. Agree on the organization’s primary name and official URL, and record legitimate aliases.
- Choose the right page and type. Add suitable Organization structured data with accurate applicable fields to the home or about page. Do not duplicate it across every URL.
- Review identity relationships. Check that alternate names and external identity links are genuine and point to pages that provide information about the organization.
- Check visible-content parity. Confirm that every assertion in the markup is supported by content a visitor can see and that the content is current.
- Validate and maintain. Test for syntax issues, then revisit the markup when the organization changes or Google updates supported search features and requirements.
Google periodically changes supported search appearances. Check its documentation updates before investing in a structured-data type, and do not assume that a type remains eligible simply because it was supported previously.

How should teams measure visibility?
Do not infer performance from a few observed AI answers or assume third-party tools can reveal Google’s internal ranking systems. Google says traffic from its AI features is included in overall Search traffic in Search Console’s Performance report under Web; its newer generative AI guidance also points to a Generative AI performance report. Use the reporting context Google identifies, and interpret changes alongside the site’s broader search performance rather than treating anecdotes as proof of a markup effect.
No official evidence cited here quantifies an industry-wide shift toward entity governance or shows that adding schema causes more AI citations. The sound case for the work is operational: consistent identity and accurate, maintained structured data make a site’s facts clearer while supporting established SEO practices and applicable rich-result eligibility.
