If you want your business to appear in AI-generated search answers, keep doing sound SEO—but do not make a rank-tracking dashboard your strategy. Google says its generative Search features draw on core Search ranking and quality systems. A stronger business strategy is to make your market point of view distinctive and your offering easy to understand, while keeping your site useful, credible, and accessible to Search. Category design can help clarify why your business matters; it cannot replace SEO or guarantee an AI citation.
What Google’s AI Search guidance means for SEO
Google describes its generative Search features as using its core Search ranking and quality systems. In its explanation of retrieval-augmented generation, Google says the system retrieves relevant, up-to-date pages from its Search index and uses information from those pages to generate responses with supporting links. It also describes query fan-out: a model can issue related searches to gather information for a broader question.
The practical consequence is not that every search result will become an AI citation, or that a high position guarantees one. It is that visibility in Google’s generative Search experience still depends on material Google can find and assess through Search. In a May 15, 2026 Search Central announcement, Google Search’s John Mueller put it this way: “The best practices for SEO remain relevant and foundational to success with our generative AI features.”
Google’s June 3, 2026 announcement, updated August 31, 2026, said AI Overviews had more than 2.5 billion monthly active users and AI Mode more than one billion monthly users. These are Google’s figures for its own products, not independent measures of total AI-search usage, website referrals, or business results.

What to do on your site
- Publish useful, original material that answers a real audience need and contributes a clear point of view rather than repeating commodity information.
- Keep pages crawlable, organized clearly, and eligible for a Search snippet by meeting Google Search’s technical requirements.
- Explain what your business does, who it serves, and what distinguishes its offering in language customers can understand.
- Do not treat technical eligibility as a promise of inclusion: Google says meeting its requirements does not guarantee a page will be crawled, indexed, or served.
Why category strategy is not an SEO replacement
Search optimization and category strategy address different problems. SEO helps make relevant pages discoverable and useful in search. Category strategy asks how customers understand a market, which alternatives they consider, and whether a company’s position is meaningfully distinct. A clearer category story may make the business easier for customers to understand, but the reviewed strategy literature does not establish that category creation reliably improves AI-answer visibility or outperforms SEO.
| Question | SEO work | Category work |
|---|---|---|
| What are we trying to clarify? | Whether useful pages can be found, understood, and considered for Search. | What customer problem the business addresses and how its position differs from alternatives. |
| What can we influence? | Content quality, technical accessibility, site organization, and Search eligibility. | Market framing, audience, differentiation, and whether the company can deliver on its positioning. |
| What cannot be promised? | A particular ranking, crawl, indexation, or AI citation. | That choosing a new label will create a market or make the company its leader. |
An academic review by Rodolphe Durand and Mukti Khaire distinguishes the emergence of market categories from deliberate attempts to create them. That distinction matters: companies can try to shape how a market is understood, but a label alone does not bring a category into existence. Harvard Business Review’s 2019 commentary by Eddie Yoon, Christopher Lochhead, and Nicolas Cole likewise cautions against equating category creation with being first to market. The authors argue that category creation can involve more than a breakthrough product, including business-model innovation and a broader market shift; this is expert commentary, not a universal formula.

How to define a category without just renaming your product
Use category work to make a testable business position clearer—not to invent terminology for its own sake. The following sequence synthesizes the cited strategy sources; it is a practical exercise, not a validated universal framework.
-
Start with the customer’s problem
Describe the costly, frustrating, or unresolved task customers are trying to handle. Be specific about the audience and situation. If the problem is meaningful only when described using your company’s preferred jargon, the framing may not yet be useful to buyers.
-
Name the alternatives customers already use
Include direct competitors, adjacent products, internal workarounds, and doing nothing where relevant. This exposes whether your proposed category represents a real difference in how the problem is solved or simply a new label for a familiar offering.
-
State the distinction and its evidence
Explain what your business does differently and why that difference matters to the intended customer. Tie the claim to the product, service, or business model—not just a tagline. Identify what a buyer could observe that would make the distinction credible.
-
Check whether the company can deliver the promise
Compare the category claim with what the product does, how customers buy and use it, and what the business can consistently provide. If the position depends on capabilities the company does not have, the issue is not a messaging gap; it is a mismatch between the claim and the offering.

Test the framing in a defined market
Specify the geography and customer segment before deciding whether the company is central or distinctive. A 2015 Harvard Business Review brand-strategy article uses centrality and distinctiveness as useful dimensions for examining position, and notes that geography and target segment can change the result. Treat those dimensions as prompts for analysis, not proof that a new category has been won.
How to get your brand mentioned in AI search
No documented method guarantees that an AI-generated answer will mention a particular brand. The defensible approach is to make the business and its relevant evidence understandable and discoverable, then measure what Google makes measurable.
- Make important pages answer specific customer questions with accurate, original information and a clear connection to your product or expertise.
- Use consistent, plain-language descriptions of the business, audience, problem, and offering across relevant pages. Consistency helps readers understand the claim; it is not a citation trick.
- Maintain ordinary technical SEO: ensure pages are crawlable, site structure is clear, and relevant pages meet Search requirements.
- Use Search Console’s generative-AI performance report to inspect performance across Google’s generative-AI Search features. Do not interpret its scope as a complete measure of every AI system or every way customers discover a business.
Do you need GEO or AEO?
Google’s guidance does not establish a separate technical discipline or a special set of requirements for generative-AI Search. The labels “GEO” and “AEO” may be used by practitioners to describe work on visibility in generative or answer-oriented search, but adopting a label does not create a need for a different Google-specific playbook. Focus on the underlying work: useful original content, accessible pages, clear site organization, and a credible explanation of the business.
Google says special AI markup or an llms.txt file is not needed for its generative Search features. It also says there is no ideal page length, no need to split all content into tiny chunks, and no requirement to rewrite pages in a special style for AI. Structured data is not required for generative-AI Search, although it can still be useful for eligibility for ordinary rich results. Inauthentic mentions are not a supported shortcut.

How to measure progress without chasing a fake ranking
For Google’s generative-AI Search performance, Search Console’s report is the documented source. Google cautions that third-party tools do not have access to its internal ranking or AI systems. A tracker may still help a team organize its own observations, but its results should be treated as outputs of that tool’s method—not as authoritative readings of Google’s private systems.
Keep business outcomes separate from visibility indicators. A mention or appearance can be worth investigating, but it does not by itself establish qualified traffic, customer understanding, or revenue impact. Evaluate those outcomes with the measurement systems your organization uses, and be clear about what each system can and cannot observe.
Quick Recap
Decide what to fix first
- Pages are hard to find or technically inaccessible: prioritize crawlability, site organization, and Search requirements before investing in new category language.
- Visitors can find the site but cannot explain the offer: clarify the customer problem, audience, alternatives, and distinction on the relevant pages.
- The position sounds different but the product does not deliver it: revisit the product or business-model claim rather than relying on a rename.
- AI visibility reports disagree: check what each source measures and how; use Google’s documented Search Console reporting for Google’s generative features, and do not treat external trackers as access to Google’s internal systems.
