Yes—but “search without uploading your draft” describes a way to start a literature search, not a guarantee that your text stays on your computer. Elicit and Consensus let you begin with a natural-language question, while Semantic Scholar says an account is not required to access papers. Those services search their own indexes; uploading a draft is a separate feature used for analysis, extraction, or chat. Before entering unpublished or confidential material, check the exact feature’s requirements, the current privacy policy, your institution’s rules, and any applicable agreement.
What “without uploading your drafts” actually means
A query-only workflow sends a research question such as How does sleep restriction affect insulin sensitivity in adults? The assistant searches a provider’s paper index and returns candidate studies, summaries, or a structured report. You have not necessarily submitted your manuscript, thesis chapter, grant proposal, or notes.
That is different from asking a service to analyze your own file. Upload-based functions may accept a PDF, Word document, or collection of papers for full-text chat, data extraction, screening, or comparison. A product can offer both modes. Seeing an “upload” button does not mean an upload is required for basic discovery, and seeing a search box does not prove that every later workflow is upload-free.
- Query-led discovery: describe the question; the service searches its indexed literature.
- Document analysis: submit your own file or selected papers for extraction, chat, or review.
- Local processing: the document is analyzed on your device. The sources reviewed here do not establish that Elicit or Consensus processes all content locally.
Therefore, “no upload” is a user choice for a particular step. It is not evidence of zero data collection, permanent confidentiality, or an on-device model.

These corpus totals and method descriptions are vendor statements, not independent accuracy or privacy tests. A larger index can improve recall while still returning an irrelevant, inaccessible, retracted, or poorly indexed study.
Elicit: question-led search plus review workflows
How its search works
Elicit says it ranks papers by semantic similarity—content and meaning—rather than relying mainly on matching keywords. It also describes custom embedding models and ranking signals such as citation count and recency. Language models then prioritize the top 1,000 papers for relevance; the number shown to you depends on your plan and workflow. The service reports more than 138 million academic papers and conference proceedings, updated weekly, and more than 545,000 ClinicalTrials.gov trials updated in real time. Start with a question, not your draft. For example, specify the population, intervention, comparator, outcome, and date range when those constraints matter. Then inspect the returned titles and abstracts before relying on any generated synthesis. Semantic matching can find papers that use different terminology, but it can also surface studies that are conceptually adjacent rather than directly on point.

Research Agent, Reports, and Systematic Reviews
Elicit’s current workflow guide groups earlier Find Papers, Extract Data, and Chat with Papers capabilities into Research Agent as of September 30, 2026. Research Agent sessions have access to the full paper corpus and the wider web and can take up to 20 uploaded resources. That upload allowance is an optional input for a session, not a requirement for query-only discovery.
Research Reports produce a report with references to the papers used. Systematic Review is a more formal workflow: it guides collection, screening, extraction, and a PRISMA-style report. The help page says Systematic Review is available to Pro, Scale, and Enterprise subscribers, and all workflows remain subject to plan usage limits. Check the live labels and limits in Elicit’s workflow guide before planning a review.
Privacy limits to understand
Elicit Research, PBC’s privacy policy says it collects personal information such as an email address and credentials, plus automatically collected device and usage information. It describes retention for stated purposes, legal exceptions, and technical and organizational safeguards, while warning that internet transmission cannot be guaranteed completely secure. The page is marked “Last updated: September 12, 2023,” so treat it as a document to recheck rather than a timeless promise: Elicit privacy policy.

Elicit’s Trust Center search result lists SOC 2 materials, including a report dated July 22, 2026. The accessible material does not establish the certification’s scope, controls, or findings; do not infer those details from a search snippet. Technical access through the API
The official Elicit API reference describes searches for academic papers and clinical trials. Paper search can use semantic mode or corpus-specific keyword mode, with Elicit’s corpus or PubMed as options. API availability, authentication, quotas, and current account requirements can change, so verify them in the documentation before building an automated pipeline.
Semantic Scholar: the account-free starting point
For readers whose immediate concern is avoiding an account or draft upload, the official FAQ gives a narrow, useful answer: “Please note that you do not need to create an account to access papers on Semantic Scholar.” The same FAQ says it does not collect sign-in information such as a username or password. Read that literally. It supports account-free paper access; it does not establish that the site collects no browsing, device, or usage information, nor that every feature works without an account. Consult the Semantic Scholar FAQ for the current wording.

If you later use an export, alert, library, or third-party analysis feature, check whether that step introduces account or data requirements.
Consensus: broad search with full-text reach
Consensus describes a database of more than 220 million peer-reviewed research papers, updated weekly. Its paper data comes from Semantic Scholar, OpenAlex, and its own scholarly-web crawl. The service says it combines semantic embeddings with keyword matching and, where full text is available, can search beyond titles and abstracts into methods, results, and discussion. Those details come from its official explanation of how Consensus works.

The distinction between indexed papers and your documents matters here. Consensus also documents full-text chat across papers, collections, or uploaded documents. A search-page description therefore cannot be used to label every Consensus workflow “no upload.” Before pasting a draft or attaching a file, identify whether you are using paper search, a saved collection, paper chat, or document chat, then read the applicable privacy terms.

A safe query-only literature-search procedure
- Classify the material. Decide whether you are searching public literature or handling unpublished, confidential, personally identifiable, or contractually restricted text. Keep the latter out of a query box unless your review permits the service.
- Write a question instead of pasting prose. Include the population, intervention or exposure, comparator, outcome, study design, language, and date range that affect eligibility.
- Choose the discovery layer. Use Elicit for semantic ranking and report-oriented workflows, Semantic Scholar for account-free paper access, or Consensus when its broader index and full-text availability fit the question.
- Confirm the mode before continuing. Look for labels such as paper search, Research Agent, report, systematic review, paper chat, or uploaded-document chat. The same product may switch from indexed search to file processing.
- Inspect source records. Open the DOI, publisher page, repository copy, abstract, methods, sample size, and publication date. Record retractions, corrections, preprints, and access restrictions.
- Cross-check important claims. Ask whether the result is primary research, a review, a protocol, or a commentary. Compare several relevant papers rather than treating an AI-generated paragraph as evidence.
- Save a reproducible trail. Keep the exact question, filters, date searched, result links, and inclusion decisions. A weekly-updated index can change between searches.
- Only then consider uploads. If extraction or screening requires your own files, remove unnecessary identifiers and verify retention, training-use, deletion, access, and contractual terms first.

No independent comparative accuracy or privacy statistic is established for these services in the cited material. Treat “138 million” and “220 million” as coverage descriptions, not rankings. Coverage can differ by discipline, language, publication type, indexing delay, and full-text availability.
Privacy checklist for unpublished work
- Read the current privacy policy and terms on the date you intend to use the service; policy dates and feature names change.
- Determine what is collected automatically, how long it is retained, who can access it, and whether prompts or files are used to improve models.
- Check deletion controls and whether backups, legal holds, or account records limit deletion.
- Confirm whether the exact feature accepts uploads, not merely whether the product has a search page.
- Follow your university, employer, funder, publisher, or client rules for confidential and unpublished research.
- Use the minimum necessary text. A research question normally reveals less than a draft containing names, methods, data, reviewer comments, or intellectual property.
- Do not infer local processing, zero retention, or confidentiality from an account-free experience.
Common failure modes and fixes
The assistant returns plausible but off-topic papers
Semantic similarity can favor shared concepts while missing a required population or outcome. Add explicit eligibility terms, then verify abstracts and methods manually.
A report cites papers that do not support the sentence
Open the cited paper and check the exact result, sample, and direction of effect. Rewrite the claim to match the evidence or remove it; never treat a citation list as validation by itself.

Stop before attaching the file. Return to the feature documentation and identify whether you are using indexed search, paper chat, collection chat, or uploaded-document analysis. If the requirement is unclear, use a query-only search or a service approved by your organization.
The result set changes from one day to the next
Weekly corpus updates, citation changes, and ranking adjustments can alter results. Save the query, date, filters, and paper identifiers so another researcher can reproduce the search.
A very large corpus creates false confidence
Measure usefulness by recall of relevant studies, traceable sources, full-text access, and fit to your inclusion criteria—not by the headline paper count.
