The right AI red-team engagement is a scoped security test with reproducible evidence, controlled execution, business-impact analysis, and a defined retest—not a collection of impressive jailbreak screenshots. Before signing, make the provider document your system architecture, threat model, allowed actions, safety controls, data handling, reporting standard, and acceptance criteria.
Use the questions below to determine whether a service can test your actual chatbot, retrieval-augmented application, tool-calling agent, MCP architecture, or multi-agent workflow, and whether you will be able to reproduce and fix its findings afterward.
Start with this buyer’s checklist
Ask every provider to answer these questions in writing and attach the answers to the statement of work (SOW):
- What exact system class, model and provider versions, tools, integrations, data stores, users, permissions, and business actions are in scope?
- Which trust boundaries and attack paths will be tested, including memory, cross-session behavior, retrieval, tool calls, and downstream systems?
- What are the permitted targets, prohibited actions, test windows, credentials, rate limits, escalation contacts, and stop conditions?
- How will the team test single-turn, multi-turn, stateful, prompt-injection, data-exfiltration, authorization, privacy, harmful-content, reliability, and unsafe-tool-use risks?
- Which tests are automated, which require human judgment, and how are critical findings verified?
- Will each finding include attack steps, raw evidence, affected component, severity rationale, confidence, business impact, remediation, and retest status?
- Can you stop testing independently, and can we revoke credentials or remove deployed agents without vendor assistance?
- What is logged, how are logs protected and replayed, where is data processed, who can access it, how long is it retained, and how is deletion proved?
- How are model, prompt, dependency, and tool changes tracked, and what happens when the system drifts after the test?
- What exactly counts as a completed retest, and is it included in the fee?
A provider that cannot answer these points clearly is selling activity rather than assurance.

1. Match the scope to the system you actually deploy
AI security findings are meaningful only in the context of the deployed architecture. A public chatbot has different trust boundaries and consequences from a retrieval-augmented generation (RAG) application, an agent that can call APIs, or a workflow in which several agents pass state and credentials to one another.
Identify the system class and boundaries
Require an architecture-specific scope statement covering:
- Model family, model and provider version, system prompts, fine-tuning, safety layers, and routing logic.
- Interfaces exposed to users, administrators, developers, and automated clients.
- Retrieval indexes, documents, vector stores, memory stores, conversation history, and other persistent state.
- Tools, plugins, APIs, browsers, code execution, databases, messaging systems, and identity providers the model can reach.
- Service accounts, user permissions, approval gates, secrets, and the business actions an agent is allowed to perform.
- Data flows between agents in a multi-agent workflow and the systems that trust their outputs.
- Production, staging, sandbox, and test environments, including differences between them.
For MCP-based or other tool-protocol architectures, name each server, tool, authentication boundary, and authorization decision. “The AI application” is not a sufficient target description.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsDefine the threat model
Ask the provider to state who the attacker is, what access that attacker has, what they are trying to achieve, and what impact matters to your organization. Threat actors may include an unauthenticated visitor, a normal customer, a privileged employee, a compromised integration, or another agent. Objectives can include extracting confidential data, bypassing authorization, causing an unsafe transaction, poisoning retrieval content, manipulating another agent, or degrading reliability.
The SOW should map threats to assets and controls. If your highest-risk action is issuing a refund, changing a production record, sending an external message, or approving a transaction, that action must appear explicitly in the test plan.
Write rules of engagement before testing begins
Have both parties sign rules covering:
- Allowed targets, accounts, domains, tools, data sets, and environments.
- Prohibited actions, such as destructive changes, real-world purchases, messages to uninvolved people, or access to unrelated tenants.
- Test dates, hours, maintenance exclusions, and expected traffic levels.
- Temporary credentials, least-privilege roles, secrets handling, and credential rotation after testing.
- Rate limits, concurrency limits, maximum token or API spend, and restrictions on automated actions.
- Emergency contacts, escalation order, approval requirements, and conditions that require an immediate pause.
- Evidence-handling rules, incident reporting, and the process for ending the engagement.
Do not accept “we will use our standard methodology” as a substitute for these specifics.

Demand coverage beyond jailbreaks
OWASP’s Vendor Evaluation Criteria for AI Red Teaming Providers & Tooling, version 1.0, warns that “Many vendors overclaim, focusing on superficial jailbreak demonstrations or static prompt libraries while ignoring systemic vulnerabilities, workflow bypasses, misuse risks, and failures in agentic or tool-enabled systems.” The document was published by the OWASP GenAI Security Project on February 4, 2026, with a public PDF release on January 13, 2026.
Ask for a coverage matrix that distinguishes tested, partially tested, and untested areas. At minimum, discuss:
- Single-turn and multi-turn prompt attacks.
- Direct and indirect prompt injection through user input, retrieved content, web pages, files, and tool responses.
- System-prompt and secret extraction, sensitive-data leakage, and cross-tenant access.
- Authorization bypass, privilege escalation, confused-deputy behavior, and insecure direct object references in tool workflows.
- Unsafe tool use, parameter manipulation, excessive agency, and actions taken without required approval.
- Memory poisoning, state confusion, cross-session leakage, and long-lived-session behavior.
- Harmful or policy-violating content, privacy failures, bias, reliability, and denial-of-service conditions where relevant.
- RAG poisoning, citation or grounding failures, output-to-code or output-to-query injection, and downstream validation gaps.
- Failure modes that arise only when agents communicate or when a model, dependency, tool, or policy changes.
2. Test whether the provider produces defensible evidence
Request a redacted report and a finding walkthrough
Before signing, obtain a sample redacted report and an anonymized walkthrough of one serious finding. The walkthrough should show the complete attack sequence rather than a final screenshot:
- Starting account, permissions, environment, and system state.
- Exact prompts, tool inputs, retrieved content, model outputs, and relevant timestamps.
- The component or trust boundary that failed.
- Steps another competent tester can repeat.
- Expected behavior versus observed behavior.
- Severity method, confidence rating, and business-impact analysis.
- Recommended remediation, compensating controls, and retest result.
If the provider will not show this level of evidence because of client confidentiality, ask for a sufficiently detailed synthetic example and a description of its evidence format.
Separate automation from expert judgment
Automation is useful for breadth, repeatability, and regression testing. It does not by itself establish exploitability or business impact. Ask:
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
- Which attack generation, mutation, scanning, and scoring tasks are automated?
- Who reviews outputs and what qualifications do those reviewers have?
- Are critical findings reproduced by a human using an independent path?
- How are duplicate findings, flaky behavior, and false positives removed?
- How are novel custom attacks designed when a static prompt library does not fit the workflow?
- Can prompts, outputs, tool traces, and environment state be exported as reusable regression tests?
Prefer a provider that can demonstrate both repeatable baseline tests and custom tests that uncovered a previously unknown path in a comparable system. Ask for the limits of that evidence; one successful example does not prove universal coverage.

Require confidence and coverage disclosure
Every finding should have a confidence rating separate from severity. A high-severity hypothesis with weak evidence should not be presented as an exploited vulnerability. The report should explain the confidence scale, the evidence supporting the rating, and what would raise or lower it.
Coverage metrics should identify the tested interfaces, attack families, sessions, tools, roles, data classes, and environments. They should also list exclusions and areas the provider could not test. A percentage without a denominator or scope definition is not a useful metric.
3. Verify safety controls for autonomous and agentic testing
Testing an autonomous agent can create the same kinds of side effects that the engagement is meant to discover. Documentation alone cannot prove that a kill switch works. Request a live demonstration or a customer acceptance test.
Controls that must be demonstrated
- Kill switch: a clearly identified action that stops active test runs and prevents new actions.
- Scope enforcement: technical controls that block targets, tools, accounts, and actions outside the signed rules of engagement.
- Rate limiting: limits on requests, concurrency, spend, and destructive or high-impact operations.
- Approval gates: human approval before sending messages, changing records, executing code, or taking other consequential actions.
- Credential controls: least privilege, short-lived credentials where possible, secret isolation, rotation, and revocation.
- Emergency escalation: staffed contacts, response targets, and a second termination path if the primary control fails.
- Customer stop authority: the customer can halt activity without waiting for vendor approval.
- Agent removal: the customer can disable or remove deployed test agents without vendor cooperation.
Ask how quickly each stop path takes effect, whether it works during network or vendor-console failure, and how the provider records the event.
Use the APTS tiers as an assurance ladder
The OWASP Agentic Product and Tool Security (APTS) guide provides requirement counts that can help you specify an assurance target. The current guide accessed in 2026 lists the following cumulative levels:
| APTS level | Requirements | Positioning | When it may fit |
|---|---|---|---|
| Tier 1 | 72 | Foundation | Basic control baseline and early-stage deployments. |
| Tier 2 | 157 cumulative | Verified | Recommended minimum for production deployments, regulated industries, or engagements requiring full accountability. |
| Tier 3 | 173 cumulative | Comprehensive | Critical infrastructure, fully autonomous operations, and the strictest regulatory requirements. |
These counts are not a substitute for testing your implementation. Put the desired tier, applicable requirements, evidence format, and exceptions in the SOW. For behavioral requirements such as stop timing and scope enforcement, acceptance testing is essential.

4. Put auditability, data protection, and change management in the contract
AI assessments often handle sensitive prompts, customer records, credentials, model outputs, and vulnerability evidence. Treat the provider as a data processor and security dependency, not merely a consultant.
Recommended Free Tools
Logging and replay questions
- Is every action, decision, prompt, tool invocation, parameter, timestamp, identity, and outcome logged?
- Are logs tamper-evident, cryptographically chained or signed, and independently verifiable?
- Can a finding be replayed using the model, prompt, tool, dependency, permissions, and environment state that existed at test time?
- Are failed, blocked, approved, and abandoned actions logged as well as successful ones?
- Can the customer export raw evidence in a usable format without a proprietary viewer?
Data-isolation and residency questions
- Which customer tenants, workers, storage systems, and support personnel can access the data?
- Where are prompts, outputs, logs, recordings, and reports processed and stored?
- Which third-party models or services receive customer content, and is that content used for training?
- How are test data, production data, and data from other customers isolated?
- What encryption protects data in transit, at rest, and during handoff to ticketing or collaboration systems?
Retention, deletion, and incident terms
- What are the retention periods for raw prompts, outputs, logs, credentials, screenshots, and final reports?
- What secure-disposal procedure applies at the end of the engagement?
- Will the provider issue a deletion certificate or other verifiable proof?
- How quickly must the provider notify you of unauthorized access, accidental disclosure, or a test-induced incident?
- Who receives the notification, including an after-hours contact?
- What is the process for revoking credentials, disabling agents, and confirming that access has ended?
Track model and dependency changes
Record model, prompt, policy, retrieval, dependency, tool, and configuration versions at test time. Ask how the provider detects drift during a long engagement and how a material change triggers additional testing. A report tied to an unrecorded model version may not be reproducible six weeks later.
5. Define the report, remediation, and retest before work starts
Make the deliverables measurable rather than accepting “a security report.” Require:
- Executive summary for risk owners.
- Architecture, scope, assumptions, dates, identities, and environments tested.
- Coverage matrix and explicit untested areas.
- Technical findings with attack evidence, reproduction steps, affected components, severity, confidence, and business impact.
- Remediation guidance that distinguishes code, configuration, model, policy, identity, monitoring, and process changes.
- Reusable prompts, traces, or automated regression tests where safe to provide.
- Risk-prioritized remediation plan and agreed owners.
- Final evidence package and handoff session.
Specify severity and business impact
Ask which severity method is used and whether it accounts for exploitability, privileges, affected data, reversibility, scale, and the value of the business action. Require a plain-language impact statement—for example, whether an attacker could read another tenant’s records, trigger an unapproved transaction, or cause an operational outage—rather than a technical label alone.
Make retesting a contractual deliverable
Define a retest as a new attempt against the remediated control, not a review of a screenshot or a statement that a ticket was closed. The SOW should state:
Windows Errors? Fix Them Before They Spread
Repair common Windows errors and clear accumulated junk for a smoother, more stable PC - no reinstall needed.Free scan · no reinstallOutdated Drivers Are Slowing You Down
One free scan finds every outdated or missing driver and matches the right update for your exact hardware.Free scan · exact hardware match- Which findings and compensating controls are eligible.
- How much remediation time is included and when retesting must occur.
- Whether the original attack, variants, and relevant neighboring paths will be rerun.
- How “fixed,” “partially fixed,” “accepted risk,” and “not reproducible” are recorded.
- How unresolved findings are rescored after compensating controls.
- Whether new issues discovered during retesting are included in the final report.
6. Anchor acceptance criteria to independent frameworks
NIST ARIA: use three evaluation modes
The NIST ARIA Evaluation Planning Manual (NIST AI 200-3), published September 18, 2026, describes holistic evaluation through three modes: Model Testing, Red Teaming, and User Testing. Use this structure to avoid treating a red-team engagement as the entire assurance program.

- 【Reduce Safety Risks】Cable tray under desk keeps all plugs away from your kids, no more worry about tripping. Using 2 holes wire tray saves extra space, helps you easily cabling and wire protection. The mesh design is not easy to accumulate dust, but avoids safety accidents caused by messy wires.
- Model Testing examines model behavior under defined conditions and test sets.
- Red Teaming probes adversarial, misuse, and system-level failure paths.
- User Testing evaluates how real users interact with the system, including usability and operational failure modes.
Your SOW can specify which mode the provider performs, which mode another team owns, and how results are combined. A provider that offers only prompt attacks should not claim to have completed all three.
OWASP AISVS: turn requirements into acceptance tests
OWASP AISVS is a vendor-neutral, free catalogue of testable security requirements for AI-enabled systems. Use relevant requirements as an acceptance-test baseline for penetration tests, red-team exercises, audits, and remediation verification. Ask the provider to map each test and finding to the applicable requirement, identify requirements that were out of scope, and explain any interpretation used.
7. Compare providers on scope-linked value, not day rate
No authoritative market price is established for comparable AI red-team services. Headline day rates therefore cannot tell you which proposal is cheaper or more complete. Request an itemized SOW and compare the same scope across proposals.

| Comparison axis | Questions to ask |
|---|---|
| System and threat-model coverage | Does the proposal cover your users, tools, memory, integrations, permissions, data stores, and critical actions? |
| Human expertise versus automation | Who designs attacks, verifies critical findings, and removes false positives? |
| Reproducibility | Will you receive raw traces, environment details, and regression tests? |
| Stateful and agentic depth | Are multi-turn, long-lived sessions, cross-session state, tool calls, MCP, and multi-agent paths included? |
| Safety and stop authority | Can you observe and test kill switches, scope controls, approvals, limits, and credential revocation? |
| Evidence and reporting | Are severity, confidence, business impact, coverage, and exclusions clearly documented? |
| Data governance | What are the processing locations, tenant isolation, retention, deletion proof, and third-party model disclosures? |
| Independence | Does the tester have incentives that could weaken objective findings or remediation advice? |
| Remediation and retesting | Are retest methods, timing, rescoring, and new findings defined and priced? |
| Standards mapping | Can results map to NIST ARIA, OWASP AISVS, or the control baseline you use? |
| Deployment model | Will testing run in your environment, the provider’s environment, or a hybrid, and what access is required? |
| Total scope-linked cost | Are setup, custom attack design, data handling, report handoff, retesting, and travel or infrastructure charges itemized? |
Normalize proposals by system, role, tool, session, and attack-family coverage. A lower quote that excludes your agent’s write actions or memory store is not a lower price for the same service.
8. A practical procurement sequence
- Inventory the system. Document models, versions, prompts, users, tools, integrations, data stores, permissions, environments, and business-critical actions.
- Write the threat model. Name attackers, entry points, trust boundaries, valuable assets, and unacceptable outcomes.
- Send a common questionnaire. Give every finalist the same scope, rules-of-engagement, evidence, safety, data, and retest questions.
- Inspect evidence. Review a redacted report and conduct a finding walkthrough with the people who would perform the work.
- Test stop authority. Require a demonstration or acceptance test of kill switches, scope enforcement, rate limits, approvals, and emergency escalation for agentic work.
- Score proposals against acceptance criteria. Weight coverage, evidence quality, safety, data governance, and retesting—not marketing claims.
- Negotiate the SOW and security addendum. Attach the architecture, threat model, rules of engagement, deliverables, retention terms, incident timeline, and deletion procedure.
- Run a kickoff and access review. Confirm temporary credentials, logging, test windows, escalation contacts, and the exact stop procedure before the first attack.
- Hold evidence reviews during testing. Resolve scope questions and suspected critical findings while the relevant state can still be reproduced.
- Accept only complete deliverables. Check that every finding has evidence, confidence, impact, remediation, and status; then conduct the contracted retest.
Red flags that should pause a purchase
- The proposal promises “jailbreak coverage” but does not name tools, workflows, permissions, memory, or business actions.
- A static prompt library is presented as proof of systemic security.
- The provider cannot show a sample finding with reproducible steps and raw evidence.
- Severity is reported without confidence, exploitability, or business impact.
- Untested areas and coverage limits are absent from the report.
- An autonomous tester has no demonstrated kill switch, customer stop authority, scope enforcement, or credential-revocation process.
- Logs are inaccessible, mutable, or impossible to replay against the recorded environment state.
- Third-party model use, data location, retention, and deletion are vague.
- The contract has no incident-notification timeline or no proof-of-deletion mechanism.
- Retesting means only a document review, with no rerun of the attack or its variants.
- The quote is a single day rate with no itemized scope, exclusions, or assumptions.
What a defensible decision looks like
Sign when the provider can connect your actual architecture and threat model to a written test plan; demonstrate safe, interruptible execution; produce reproducible, human-verified evidence; protect and delete your data under contract; and retest fixes against agreed acceptance criteria. Use NIST ARIA to place red teaming alongside model and user testing, and use OWASP AISVS or an equivalent vendor-neutral catalogue to make requirements testable. If a proposal cannot make those commitments, keep evaluating rather than paying for a jailbreak demonstration with no durable assurance value.
