Choose 4-bit when VRAM is the limiting factor or when fitting a larger model matters more than preserving maximum quality. Choose 8-bit when you have the memory and your workload depends on reliable instruction following, long context, tool calls, or structured output. Neither setting is universally faster or better: the model, quantization method, inference engine, GPU, context length, batch size, and task mix determine the result.
Quantization reduces the numerical precision used to store model weights, and sometimes activations. It can make a model practical on a smaller GPU, but the apparent weight-memory saving does not include every runtime allocation. Use the comparisons and test procedure below to select a setting for your exact workload.
What model quantization changes
A model’s parameters are normally stored in formats such as FP32, FP16, or BF16. Quantization maps those higher-precision values to lower-bit representations, commonly 8-bit or 4-bit integers. AWS describes post-training quantization as converting 16- or 32-bit values to 8- or 4-bit values without retraining; depending on the method, model size can shrink by roughly 2–8 times.
Recommended Free Tools
The bit count is primarily a memory and bandwidth setting, not a universal quality score. Weight-only quantization changes how parameters are stored. Activation quantization also changes intermediate values during inference and can have different accuracy and hardware requirements. A checkpoint advertised as “4-bit” may therefore behave differently from another 4-bit checkpoint because of its calibration data, scaling scheme, outlier handling, kernels, and runtime implementation.

A useful AWS guidance snapshot illustrates the weight-storage trend for a 7-billion-parameter model:
| Representation | Illustrative 7B weight memory | What the figure means |
|---|---|---|
| FP32 | About 28 GB | Full 32-bit precision weights |
| FP16 or BF16 | About 14 GB | Half the FP32 weight storage |
| FP8 | About 7 GB | Lower-precision floating-point weights |
| 4-bit | About 3.5 GB | Illustrative low-bit weight storage |
These are illustrative weight figures, not the amount a running application needs. Quantization metadata, temporary workspaces, activations, the tokenizer, framework allocations, and the key-value (KV) cache all consume additional memory.
AWS summarizes the concept this way: “Quantization reduces the numerical precision of model weights (and optionally activations) from higher-precision formats (FP32, FP16/BF16) to lower-precision representations (FP8, MXFP4, NVFP4).”
When 4-bit is the right starting point
Use 4-bit to fit a model that otherwise will not fit
Four-bit weights use about half the weight memory of 8-bit weights. That difference can determine whether a model loads at all on a particular GPU. It is especially useful for local, interactive, single-user inference where available VRAM is the hard constraint.
Do not plan against the raw parameter calculation alone. Leave headroom for the runtime and for the longest context you intend to send. A 7B checkpoint with roughly 3.5 GB of illustrative 4-bit weights still needs additional VRAM for scales, buffers, activations, and the KV cache.

Use 4-bit when serving cost or model size matters most
If lowering memory allows you to run a larger model, keep more concurrent sessions, or use a less expensive GPU, 4-bit may provide a better overall result than running a smaller model at 8-bit. This is a capacity decision, not proof that 4-bit has equal quality.
Prefer calibrated 4-bit formats for production inference
GPTQ and AWQ are common calibrated 4-bit serving formats. Calibration uses representative data to choose scales and other parameters before deployment. Select a checkpoint that has been tested with the inference engine you plan to use, because a format’s real speed depends on supported kernels and implementation details.

Low-bit errors may not appear in a short, general chat test. Check instruction following, tool calls, JSON or schema-constrained output, coding and mathematics, multilingual prompts, and the longest context your users will submit. A model that sounds fluent can still produce malformed arguments or miss a required field after quantization.
When 8-bit is the safer choice
Use 8-bit when quality is more valuable than the last memory saving
Eight-bit retains more numerical resolution than 4-bit while still cutting weight storage substantially compared with FP16 or BF16. It is the safer starting point when answers are quality-sensitive, when you have enough VRAM, or when failures in structured output and tool execution are expensive.
Use 8-bit for long-context workloads when possible
A 2025 evaluation covering 9.7K long-context examples reported an average accuracy drop of about 0.8% for 8-bit models, while some 4-bit methods lost as much as 59% on long-context tasks. Those results are study-specific rather than guarantees for every architecture, dataset, or quantizer, but they show why a low-bit setting should not be chosen from memory figures alone.

Remember that 8-bit is not automatically slower
Fewer bits can reduce memory traffic, yet an engine may have highly optimized kernels for one format and inefficient kernels for another. Dequantization work, GPU generation, batch size, and context length can reverse the expected speed ranking. Measure first-token latency and sustained generation instead of assuming 4-bit will beat 8-bit.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteEstimate VRAM before you load a checkpoint
A first approximation for weight memory is:
weight memory ≈ parameter count × (bits ÷ 8)
The result is only a floor. Real allocations also include per-group scales and zero points, alignment, temporary matrices, the model runtime, activations, and the KV cache. Frameworks may reserve memory in pools, so a model can fail to load even when a simple sum appears to fit.
Account for the KV cache
The KV cache stores attention keys and values for tokens already processed. AWS notes that it can dominate memory for long sequences. Longer context, larger batches, and more simultaneous requests all enlarge the cache. KV-cache quantization is a separate optimization from weight-only quantization; loading 4-bit weights does not automatically make the cache 4-bit.
Budget for concurrency and batch size
A single-user test with a short prompt can fit while a production server runs out of memory under concurrent requests. Decide the maximum context length, batch size, and concurrency target before selecting a format. If those values are not fixed, benchmark at the largest combination you intend to permit rather than at a convenient default.
Keep operational headroom
Use the illustrative 7B figures as a comparison between representations, not as a promise that a 4 GB card can run a 4-bit 7B model. Check peak VRAM during prompt ingestion and generation, because either phase can create a higher temporary allocation. Leave room for the serving engine, monitoring, and occasional longer requests.

How the main quantization methods differ
| Method or path | Typical use | Calibration and trade-offs |
|---|---|---|
| bitsandbytes | Convenient on-the-fly 4-bit or 8-bit loading; QLoRA experimentation | TGI documents that it needs no calibration dataset. It is simple to integrate, but inference can be slower than GPTQ or FP16. |
| GPTQ | Pre-quantized or calibrated low-bit serving, commonly 4-bit | Accuracy depends on calibration and the chosen checkpoint. Use a backend with tested GPTQ kernels. |
| AWQ | Calibrated 4-bit serving | Designed for efficient inference, but supported kernels and speed vary by engine and GPU. |
| HQQ | On-the-fly quantization | Useful when you want runtime flexibility instead of downloading a pre-quantized checkpoint. |
| torchao | Flexible quantization and compilation workflows | Offers a path to combine quantization with compilation; validate the resulting graph on your hardware. |
| vLLM or TGI engine-native paths | High-throughput serving across supported formats | Actual performance depends on kernel support, GPU generation, batch size, and context length. |
The format name alone does not determine quality or speed. Two checkpoints labeled 4-bit can use different calibration sets and group sizes, and the same checkpoint can perform differently in two serving engines.
A practical selection procedure
- Define the workload. Record whether requests are conversational, coding-oriented, retrieval-heavy, tool-using, multilingual, or schema-constrained. Set the maximum prompt length, output length, concurrency, and latency target.
- Inventory the hardware. Note GPU model and generation, available VRAM, host RAM, driver, framework, and the inference engine version. Confirm that the engine has kernels for the candidate format.
- Choose a precision baseline. Start with 8-bit if quality risk is high and memory permits. Start with 4-bit if the FP16/BF16 or 8-bit checkpoint cannot fit or if a larger model is the priority.
- Select a compatible checkpoint. For serving, prefer a GPTQ or AWQ checkpoint tested with your engine. For quick loading or QLoRA, bitsandbytes 4-bit is a practical starting point. Consider HQQ or torchao when you need on-the-fly or compilation-oriented workflows.
- Run a quality gate. Compare the quantized model with the original or a higher-precision reference on representative prompts before optimizing throughput.
- Run a performance gate. Measure prompt-processing speed, first-token latency, steady-state tokens per second, peak VRAM, and behavior under your target concurrency.
- Deploy with limits. Set a context cap, concurrency limit, and monitoring alerts based on the measured peak. Re-test after changing the engine, GPU, batch size, or checkpoint.
Build a benchmark that catches real regressions
Use a small, repeatable suite rather than relying on a model card’s single score. Keep prompts and scoring rules identical between the reference and quantized versions.
- Factual answers: Include questions with verifiable answers and check both correctness and unsupported claims.
- Coding and mathematics: Use fixed problems with executable or exact-answer checks where possible.
- Tool calls: Validate tool selection, argument names, argument types, and behavior when a tool returns an error.
- Structured output: Parse JSON or your schema automatically; count malformed responses, missing fields, and extra prose.
- Multilingual prompts: Include the languages and scripts your users actually send.
- Long context: Test the maximum context and intermediate lengths, not only a short prompt. Include retrieval questions that require locating information near the beginning, middle, and end.
| Metric | How to record it | Decision use |
|---|---|---|
| Task accuracy | Exact-match, unit tests, rubric scores, or automated schema validation | Detects quality loss that a fluent sample can hide |
| Output-error rate | Percentage of invalid JSON, failed tool arguments, or incomplete responses | Protects downstream systems from format regressions |
| First-token latency | Time from request submission to the first generated token | Measures interactive responsiveness |
| Generation speed | Steady-state output tokens per second | Compares sustained throughput |
| Peak VRAM | Highest allocation during prompt ingestion and generation | Sets safe hardware and concurrency limits |
| Stability | Load and repeated-request tests at target concurrency | Finds out-of-memory failures and tail-latency spikes |
Keep the exact model revision, quantization settings, engine, GPU, context limit, batch size, and test prompts with the results. Changing any of these can change the ranking between 4-bit and 8-bit.

Assuming lower memory means lower latency
Bitsandbytes inference can be slower than GPTQ or FP16 according to TGI guidance. A smaller checkpoint may also spend more time dequantizing or may lack an optimized kernel. Compare end-to-end latency and tokens per second on the target engine.
Testing only short conversational prompts
Short chats may miss long-context degradation, KV-cache pressure, and schema failures. Add the longest realistic prompts and the exact integrations used in production.

Ignoring the cache while sizing VRAM
Weight memory is static, but KV-cache memory grows with sequence length, batch size, and concurrency. Set explicit limits and monitor peak allocation during the worst permitted request.
Mixing an unsupported format and backend
A checkpoint can load through a generic path yet run without the optimized kernels you expected. Confirm engine support, inspect startup logs, and benchmark after every backend change.
Choosing a quantized checkpoint by label alone
“4-bit” does not identify the calibration data, group size, activation handling, or kernel path. Compare the exact checkpoint against a higher-precision reference on your task suite.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Typical choices by workload
Very limited VRAM and interactive single-user use
Start with a 4-bit GPTQ or AWQ checkpoint that fits with measured runtime headroom. Keep context and concurrency limits conservative, then verify instruction following and structured responses before relying on it.
Quality-sensitive or long-context applications
Start with 8-bit when the GPU can accommodate it. The extra memory provides more numerical headroom, and the reported long-context evaluation shows why 4-bit degradation can be significant for some methods.
QLoRA or rapid experimentation
Use bitsandbytes 4-bit for straightforward loading and training integration. Treat it as an experimentation path, and re-measure inference if you later switch to a calibrated serving format.
High-throughput serving
Evaluate calibrated GPTQ or AWQ, or an engine-native format supported by your serving stack. Optimize with the actual GPU, batch size, context limit, and concurrency rather than selecting a format from its bit count.
The decision in one sentence
Use 4-bit to solve a capacity or cost problem, use 8-bit to preserve more quality when memory allows, and commit only after benchmarking the exact model, engine, GPU, context length, and task mix—including KV-cache behavior.
