AI has become much cheaper on a quality-adjusted basis, but that does not mean every customer’s bill is about to drop. The OECD’s aggregate index of quality-adjusted text-to-text model prices fell nearly 80% from January 2024 to April 2026. That is a market-level measure of price relative to model quality—not a promise that any one company’s invoice will fall by the same amount.
The practical reset is this: compare the cost of completing a task at the quality you need, not just a model’s advertised price per token. Usage volume, task complexity, and billing rules can outweigh a lower rate.
What “AI getting cheaper” actually means
There is no single AI price. A lower token rate is one change; a lower cost for a completed task is another. A subscription’s monthly price and the amount of work its quota covers are separate again. Mixing these measures can make a real price decline look like a saving that never reaches your bill.

| Measure | What it tells you | What it does not tell you |
|---|---|---|
| Price per token | The rate charged for a unit of model input or output. | How many tokens a task will use, or its total cost. |
| Quality-adjusted price | How model prices change when differences in capability or performance are considered. | What a particular buyer pays for a particular workload. |
| Subscription price | The recurring charge for access under a plan’s terms. | How much work the included quota supports or what happens when it is exhausted. |
| Cost per completed task | The combined expense of the calls, tokens, and other billable features needed to finish a defined job. | Whether another model or workflow can complete the same job at the same quality. |
The OECD’s nearly 80% decline is evidence of a sharp market shift in quality-adjusted prices. It is not evidence that all subscriptions became 80% cheaper, or that every API customer paid 80% less.

Why is AI getting cheaper?
Two changes can reduce the cost of useful AI work: providers can charge less for each unit of usage, and models or systems can use fewer units to do the job. Improvements in performance also matter: a less expensive model may become a viable substitute for a task that previously required a more capable, costlier one.
In a 2026 working paper, Mingdeng Du reported an approximately 600-fold decline in token prices across a dataset assembled for 2020–2026. Treat that as the paper’s estimate from its particular data and method, not as a settled, market-wide measure. OpenAI separately reported that GPT-5.6 Sol reduced its end-to-end serving costs by 20% and improved token-generation efficiency by more than 15%. Those are company-reported internal figures, not independent estimates of the industry’s costs.

Why did my AI bill go up if token prices fell?
A cheaper token can still produce a more expensive task if the task consumes more tokens or triggers more billable work. The OECD cautions that lower per-token prices and better performance do not by themselves guarantee lower effective usage costs: AI agents can use substantially more tokens per task.
For example, an agent that plans, calls tools, checks results, and retries may make multiple model calls where a simple prompt used one. The unit rate may be lower while the total number of billable inputs, outputs, or tool-related calls rises. This is why a rate card alone cannot tell you whether your monthly spend will fall.

What changed in July 2026—and what did not?
OpenAI announced reductions to its API prices in July 2026: 80% for GPT-5.6 Luna and 20% for GPT-5.6 Terra. The company described the change this way: “Starting today, GPT‑5.6 Luna, our fastest and most affordable model, will cost 80% less, while GPT‑5.6 Terra, our balanced model for everyday work, will cost 20% less.” These are that provider’s announced API reductions, not evidence of matching cuts across the market.
OpenAI said ChatGPT and Codex subscription prices and quota budgets remained unchanged in the same announcement. That distinction matters: an API price cut does not automatically change the price, included usage, or overage terms of a subscription.

Why task efficiency can matter as much as the rate
Anthropic estimates that a typical Opus 5.5 workload costs about 40% less than the comparable Opus 5 workload, attributing the difference both to lower per-token rates and to fewer tokens per task. This is Anthropic’s estimate, not a universal saving buyers should expect from switching models.
The useful comparison is therefore not simply “which model has the lowest token price?” It is “which eligible model and workflow completes this specific task at an acceptable quality, and what does the full run cost?” A cheaper model that needs repeated corrections may not be the cheaper choice overall.

What can change the amount you are charged?
Published rates are only one part of provider pricing. Before estimating a workload, check the pricing and plan terms that apply to the exact endpoint, features, and region you intend to use.
- Input and output: Providers may price input and generated output separately. Estimate both rather than treating “tokens” as one undifferentiated quantity.
- Cached input: A cache can change the rate for eligible repeated context. Confirm the conditions and whether your workload qualifies.
- Batch processing: A batch rate may be available only when a request meets the provider’s batch rules and timing requirements.
- Context length: Longer contexts can have different pricing conditions or rates. Check the applicable threshold and how your provider counts tokens.
- Speed and priority: Fast or priority modes can carry an additional charge. OpenAI lists a paid Fast mode.
- Geography and data residency: The endpoint or region can affect charges. OpenAI lists additional charges for some data-residency endpoints; Anthropic documents geography-specific conditions.
- Subscription quota and overages: A plan’s recurring fee, included allowance, and any charge or restriction after the allowance runs out determine the cost differently from metered API billing.
Anthropic also documents conditions that vary by batch use, caching, context length, and geography. Because provider pricing changes, verify the live terms for your intended region and product before budgeting; a headline rate may not apply to every request.
Is pay-per-token cheaper than an AI subscription?
Neither billing method is automatically cheaper. A subscription may suit regular interactive use when its included quota covers the work; metered API billing may fit a defined workload whose usage can be measured. But the answer depends on the task, volume, quota, overage rules, and any API-specific pricing conditions.
Recommended Free Tools
Compare the two only after defining the same work and acceptable result. For a subscription, include the recurring fee and the plan’s usage limits. For an API, count the expected input and output, repeated calls, and applicable feature or endpoint charges. If the subscription does not publish a comparable per-task rate, the honest comparison is a workload test against its quota and terms—not a made-up token-equivalent price.
How to prepare for a pricing change
- Choose representative tasks. Select real jobs your team runs often, such as answering a standard support question or summarizing a fixed type of document. Define what counts as a good result before comparing costs.
- Record the full workload. For each job, track model, input and output usage, number of calls, retries, and any cache, batch, tool, speed, or geography-related charges.
- Measure cost per accepted result. Include failed attempts and corrections. A run that is cheap but repeatedly misses the required quality is not a comparable completed task.
- Compare eligible options. Check current provider terms for the exact model, endpoint, region, context length, and billing mode. Do not assume that a discount or feature applies to your workload.
- Track both rate and volume. When a bill changes, separate the effect of new prices from changes in demand, task complexity, model choice, or agent behavior.
- Recheck after a change. Re-run the same representative tasks when you change models, prompts, or pricing arrangements. Keep the quality threshold constant so a lower cost is not achieved by quietly accepting worse results.
Will AI subscriptions get more expensive?
The available evidence does not establish that AI subscriptions as a category are about to disappear or rise in price. The OECD index measures quality-adjusted model prices through April 2026, while the July 2026 OpenAI announcement concerns particular API models and says its ChatGPT and Codex subscription prices and quota budgets were unchanged. Neither establishes what every provider will do next. Treat subscription-price forecasts as forecasts, not as a consequence already proved by falling model prices.
