AI power consumption is the electricity used to run AI computations. Strictly speaking, power is the rate electricity is being drawn, while energy is the amount used over time: power is measured in watts or megawatts (MW), and energy in kilowatt-hours (kWh), megawatt-hours (MWh), or terawatt-hours (TWh). Global data-centre totals are not the same as AI-only use, and there is no single precise global AI electricity total established by the International Energy Agency (IEA).
What does AI power consumption mean?
The phrase usually refers to electricity used to train or run AI models. Those computations happen mainly in data centres, which contain servers, storage, networking equipment, and supporting systems. AI inference can also run on conventional servers and, in some cases, on end-user devices such as phones or laptops.
The accounting boundary matters. A chip or server measurement covers only part of the electricity used by a data centre. A broader facility total can include computing equipment, cooling, networking, storage, backup and power systems, lighting, and other building services. The IEA’s discussion focuses on data-centre electricity; it does not provide one comprehensive accounting boundary that also totals embodied energy or all user devices. IEA, Energy and AI (2025)
Power and energy are different
Power describes an instantaneous rate or capacity. Energy accumulates over time. A data centre’s capacity might be stated in MW, while the electricity it consumes across a year is stated in MWh or TWh. Annual TWh figures therefore describe energy use, not “power” in the strict technical sense.

- MW: a rate of electricity demand or a facility’s power capacity.
- kWh, MWh, TWh: amounts of energy consumed over a period.
When reading a claim about AI electricity, check whether it reports facility capacity, momentary demand, or energy consumed over a specified period. Those quantities cannot be substituted for one another.
What a data-centre electricity figure includes
Whole-facility electricity includes IT equipment and operational overhead. In its 2025 analysis, the IEA estimates that servers account for about 60% of electricity demand in modern data centres on average, storage about 5%, and networking up to 5%. Cooling ranges from about 7% in efficient hyperscale centres to more than 30% in less-efficient enterprise centres. These are approximate shares that vary by facility type and efficiency, not fixed shares for every site. IEA, Energy and AI (2025)

- Various Monitoring Parameters: The power meter plug can monitor the power (W), energy (kWh), volts, amps, hertz, power factor, cost, minimum and maximum power (W), cumulative days and time of your appliances. By switching 7 display modes, you can easily know the various parameters while the appliance is working. The home energy monitor can also calculate and display how much power your appliance uses and how much electricity bill it cost in cumulative time
- Upgraded LCD Display: With large screen size 2.36 inch x 1.85 inch, clearer monitor backlit, our electrical usage monitor can display the data clearer and more visible no matter day or night. 180°full wide viewing angles is great for reading and recording the data in any angles. No need to stand on the front of the display and bend over to read the numbers
- Adjustable Backlight Time: Our upgraded watt meter has 5 options of backlight time. The default backlight time duration is 10 minutes(bL-0). If you want to change the backlight time, you can press and hold "UP" and "DOWN" button at the same time to enter backlight time setting, then press "UP" and "DOWN" to select the backlight time (bL-0 =10 minutes, bL-1=1 hour, bL-2=4 hours, bL-3=8 hours, bL-4=always on), finally press the "COST" to save the backlight time settings
- Overload protection: When the power of the appliance exceeds the overload power, the LCD will display “OVERLOAD” to warn the user. All the buttons will quit working and can only be workable when you lower or remove the load power. The default overload power is 3680W and is adjustable from 0 to 3680W. In general, you need to set the overload power to 1800W before using. Just press the "function" button for more than 3 seconds to enter the setting
- Data Memory Function: The wattage meter will record your power consumption data when you remove it from socket, or remove appliances from the electricity monitor. You can directly see the last data when you use it next time. This function can also automatically save the data when there is a sudden power failure
This difference is one reason chip-level or server-only measurements can understate the electricity needed to operate a facility. The IEA’s 4E Total Energy Model 4.0 is one example of a bottom-up modelling approach: it combines computational capacity and efficiency metrics and distinguishes facility types—including traditional, cloud, hyperscale, and AI centres—and general-compute and AI workloads. How much electricity does AI use?
A single, precise global total for AI electricity use is not established by the IEA sources. AI is only one of several workloads in data centres; workload categories are not comprehensive, and operators may not know exactly which workloads run on their facilities. Definitions of AI differ, too. As a result, published data-centre totals must not be presented as AI-only consumption. IEA, Energy and AI (2025)

One common proxy is electricity used by accelerated servers, but it is imperfect: inference can run on conventional servers, and accelerated servers can handle non-AI work such as scientific computing. Some inference may also take place on personal devices. An AI-specific estimate should therefore identify its proxy, year, geography, workloads, and measurement boundary, and should be treated as an estimate rather than a direct, complete measurement.
IEA global data-centre figures are not AI-only totals
The IEA’s published figures show the scale of data-centre electricity demand, not the amount attributable solely to AI. The 2025 and 2026 publications differ in their reporting and outlook; retain each figure’s year and status rather than combining them into one undated number.

Why AI electricity demand can rise even as models get more efficient
Electricity per task and total electricity demand can move in opposite directions. More efficient hardware and models may use less energy for a given task, while growing usage increases the number of tasks. New capabilities can also require more computation per task.

The IEA’s 2026 report characterizes simple text queries as typically using less electricity than a television running for the same period. By contrast, video generation, reasoning, and agentic tasks may use hundreds or thousands of times more energy per query than simple text generation. These are broad comparisons, not universal per-query measurements: actual energy depends on the task, model, hardware, and measurement boundary. The report also notes that AI training and use can produce large, rapid swings in power demand, which can affect the electricity systems serving data centres. IEA, Energy and AI 2026
How to compare claims about AI power consumption
Before comparing figures, make sure they describe the same thing. A useful comparison checks:
- Quantity: Is the figure power or capacity in MW, or energy over time in kWh, MWh, or TWh?
- Workload: Does it cover AI alone, AI-focused data centres, or all data-centre workloads?
- Boundary: Is it for IT equipment only or the whole facility, including cooling and other overhead?
- Time and geography: What year and region does it cover?
- Evidence type: Is it a direct measurement, an estimate, a proxy, or a scenario projection?
- Task: Does it concern training, simple text inference, or more demanding work such as video generation or agentic tasks?
Without those details, two numbers that look comparable may describe different quantities, workloads, or system boundaries.
