Use an AI math solver for fast calculations, photographed homework, and explained algebra or calculus. Use a proof assistant such as Lean, Coq/Rocq, or Isabelle when you need a formal statement, a reproducible proof script, or machine-checked software verification. The two categories solve different problems: a solver proposes an answer or explanation, while a proof assistant checks a formal proof inside a small trusted kernel.

AI solver or proof assistant? A quick decision

Your need Better first choice Why
Numerical or symbolic answer in seconds AI math solver Little setup and immediate computation
Scan a worksheet or handwritten equation Photo-capable solver Camera input turns an image into a solvable expression
See algebra or calculus worked out Solver with step-by-step mode It expands transformations and intermediate results
Explore whether a conjecture might be true Solver first, then formalize important claims Fast experimentation can precede a rigorous check
Publish a reproducible mathematical proof Lean, Coq/Rocq, or Isabelle The formal statement and proof are checked by the system
Verify software or safety properties A proof assistant suited to the project Properties can be connected to source code and checked repeatedly
Learn formal mathematics Lean with mathlib and tutorials, or another ecosystem matched to your field Libraries and teaching material reduce the initial learning curve

This is not a contest in which one tool replaces the other. A practical workflow often uses a solver to investigate an idea and a proof assistant to certify the part that matters.

What an AI math solver actually does

AI math solvers are user-facing computational systems. You type an expression, write a natural-language request, or upload a photograph, and the service parses the input, performs symbolic or numerical operations, and presents a result. Some systems combine computer-algebra routines with language-model interfaces; others focus on recognizing a problem and generating an instructional sequence.

Typical solver capabilities

  • Algebra and equations: factoring, simplifying, solving systems, manipulating inequalities, and checking substitutions.
  • Calculus: derivatives, integrals, limits, series, and related steps, depending on the service and plan.
  • Trigonometry and geometry: identities, triangle calculations, graphs, and diagram-related questions where supported.
  • Word problems: translation from prose into equations, followed by a computed answer.
  • Image input: photographed or handwritten work can be recognized by products that document camera support.

Wolfram|Alpha documents step-by-step calculators in algebra, calculus, trigonometry, equation solving, and basic mathematics. Its step-by-step controls expand an answer to show how it was obtained; some of the deeper features are part of Pro offerings. Photomath recognizes photographed problems from arithmetic through calculus and returns generated steps. Its documented free core includes symbolic step-by-step solutions, while Plus adds animated tutorials, contextual hints, and deeper explanations. Symbolab describes typed, natural-language, and photographed input, with step-by-step coverage for algebra, calculus, geometry, graphing, and word problems.

What a solver output means

A displayed derivation is an explanation produced under the service’s parsing and computation rules. It is useful evidence that the expression was interpreted in a particular way, but it is not automatically a formal proof of every statement implied by the prose around it. Ambiguous notation, an omitted domain restriction, a sign error in the input, or an invalid assumption can produce a polished-looking result.

What a proof assistant does differently

A proof assistant, also called an interactive theorem prover, requires you to state a theorem in a formal language. You supply definitions, assumptions, imports, and a proof term or tactic script. The assistant checks that the term has the required type and that every inference is permitted by its underlying logic and kernel.

Lean

Lean is both a functional programming language and an interactive theorem prover. Its mathlib library contains formalized mathematics, and tutorials provide a path from elementary propositions to more advanced topics. Automation can discharge routine goals, but you still have to express the intended theorem accurately and guide the proof when automation stops.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Coq/Rocq

Coq, now also referred to as Rocq, is a proof-assistant ecosystem built around dependent type theory. It is used for mathematical developments and verified programs, with libraries and tactics that differ from Lean’s syntax and community conventions.

Isabelle/HOL

Isabelle/HOL is associated with higher-order logic and readable Isar proof language. Its Sledgehammer tool invokes external automated provers and attempts to reconstruct their results as proof steps that Isabelle can check. That reconstruction distinction matters: an external suggestion is useful only when the Isabelle kernel accepts the resulting proof.

The trusted boundary

The assistant does not certify an informal sentence merely because it sounds plausible. First, the informal claim must be translated into definitions and a formal proposition. Then the checker must accept a proof in the selected environment, including its imported libraries and axioms. A formally proven theorem can still be the wrong theorem if the formalization does not capture what you meant.

Reliability: explanation is not the same as verification

Large language models and solver interfaces can be very good at guessing a final answer while failing to prove that the answer follows from the assumptions. A Communications of the ACM overview makes this distinction explicit: fluent reasoning text is not a rigorous validity guarantee.

For routine homework, you can often catch mistakes by substituting the result, differentiating an antiderivative, checking units, or trying a second method. For high-stakes work, those checks are not equivalent to a machine-checked proof. Consumer product pages describe supported features and workflows; they do not establish a universal correctness rate for every input, domain, or interpretation.

Proof assistants trade convenience for stronger guarantees. They force explicit domains, definitions, imports, and side conditions, and they reject a proof that does not type-check. The cost is time spent formalizing and debugging. Neither category removes the need for human judgment: a solver can misread a photo, and a proof assistant can verify a precisely stated but unintended theorem.

Choose by the job you need to finish

Homework and exam preparation

Start with a solver when the immediate goal is an answer, a worked example, or feedback on an algebraic manipulation. Enter the expression yourself when possible rather than relying entirely on a photograph; compare the parsed expression with the page before trusting the steps. Ask why a transformation is legal, and verify the final result independently. A proof assistant is usually excessive for a one-off exercise unless your goal is to learn formalization.

Photographed worksheets and handwritten equations

A camera-capable solver is the practical choice. Crop the image so that one problem is isolated, check variables and exponents after recognition, and correct any misread minus signs or fractions. Image recognition is an input convenience, not a correctness certificate.

Exploring a conjecture

Use a solver to test examples, simplify special cases, plot functions, or search for a likely pattern. Treat those experiments as evidence for exploration, not as a universal argument. If the claim will be published, reused in software, or used to support a consequential decision, formalize it in a proof assistant after you have settled the definitions and edge cases.

Publishing a reproducible proof

Use a proof assistant. Store the source file, imports, library revision, definitions, and proof script so another person can rebuild the result. A prose explanation can accompany the script, but reproducibility comes from rerunning the checker in the specified environment.

Verifying software or safety properties

Choose an assistant and library that match the programming language, verification method, and team expertise. The property must be connected to the implementation through a formal model, specification, or verified code path. A solver can help explain an invariant or generate candidate lemmas, but it does not by itself establish that deployed software satisfies the property.

Learning formal mathematics

Expect a different learning curve from school mathematics. You will learn syntax, types, theorem statements, tactics, and library search in addition to the mathematics. Lean with mathlib is one accessible route because tutorials and a large library are available; Coq/Rocq and Isabelle/HOL are sensible alternatives when your course, research group, or verification project already uses them.

Using an AI solver responsibly: a repeatable workflow

  1. State the task precisely. Include the equation, variable assumptions, units, interval, or requested form. Natural-language prompts that omit a domain invite ambiguous answers.
  2. Inspect the parsed input. For a photograph, verify every exponent, parenthesis, fraction bar, and minus sign. For typed input, check operator precedence and whether the service interpreted a symbol as a variable or a function.
  3. Request intermediate steps. Use a documented step-by-step mode rather than accepting only the final number. If the service offers multiple methods, compare them when the result matters.
  4. Check independently. Substitute a solution into the original equation, differentiate an integral, estimate the magnitude, test boundary cases, or use a second calculator.
  5. Record assumptions. Save the original problem and note restrictions such as positive variables, principal square roots, or a particular unit system.
  6. Escalate important claims. If the result is a lemma, algorithm invariant, or safety requirement, translate it into a formal proposition and check it with a proof assistant.

Starting with a proof assistant: what the work involves

  1. Select the ecosystem. Follow the language and libraries used by your course or project when one has already been chosen. Otherwise compare Lean, Coq/Rocq, and Isabelle/HOL by logic, syntax, automation, and available libraries.
  2. Define the objects. Replace informal phrases such as “a large number” or “the usual distance” with explicit types, functions, predicates, and assumptions.
  3. Write the smallest theorem. Begin with a proposition whose intended meaning you can explain. Separate definitions from the result so that errors in the model are easier to locate.
  4. Build the environment. Declare imports and library versions, then make sure the statement elaborates before attempting a long proof.
  5. Prove and check incrementally. Apply tactics or proof terms one step at a time. Read error messages as information about types, missing assumptions, or mismatched goals.
  6. Keep a reproducible source file. Another user should be able to obtain the same checked result from the stated files and dependencies, not from a screenshot of the editor.

A small Lean-style example

A solver may tell you that adding zero leaves a number unchanged. In Lean, the claim becomes a typed proposition and the proof is accepted only when the environment can verify it:

theorem add_zero_example (n : Nat) : n + 0 = n := by
  simp

The example is intentionally simple. Its value is not the arithmetic difficulty; it shows the difference between receiving an explanation and producing a term that the checker accepts for a precisely stated theorem.

Comparing the main proof-assistant ecosystems

Ecosystem Core orientation Automation and libraries Good fit when
Lean Functional programming language plus interactive theorem proving Mathlib, tactic automation, and extensive tutorials You want a modern general-purpose environment for formal mathematics or verified programs
Coq/Rocq Dependent type theory and interactive proof development Large library and tactic ecosystem shaped by long-running formalization projects Your project or research community already uses Coq/Rocq or its libraries
Isabelle/HOL Higher-order logic with readable Isar proofs Sledgehammer calls external provers and reconstructs accepted proof steps You value structured proof documents and strong automation around HOL

There is no universal winner. The logic, library coverage, editor support, teaching material, and team experience can matter more than headline automation. Switching assistants later can require translating definitions and proofs, so ecosystem fit is a decision to make early in a project.

What benchmark results do—and do not—tell you

A 2025 study in Proceedings of Machine Learning Research reported one self-play language-model theorem prover, called STP, at 65.0% on miniF2F-test, 23.9% on ProofNet-test, and 8 of 644 problems on PutnamBench, measured at pass@3200. These are results for that system, those benchmark sets, and that sampling budget.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
Reported result Scope How to interpret it
65.0% miniF2F-test, STP, pass@3200 Performance on one formal-theorem benchmark under a large sampling budget
23.9% ProofNet-test, STP, pass@3200 Lower performance on a different dataset and task distribution
8/644 PutnamBench, STP, pass@3200 Very few solved items in that reported setting

Those figures cannot be converted into an accuracy score for every language model, consumer solver, mathematical subject, or proof assistant. They also are not directly comparable with product feature descriptions such as “step-by-step solutions.” A proof assistant’s kernel is the checker; an AI theorem prover is an attempt to generate scripts that the checker may accept.

Common mistakes and how to recover

Trusting a fluent solver explanation

Symptom: every step looks plausible, but a hidden assumption or sign error changes the answer. Recovery: restate the domain, inspect the parsed input, and verify by substitution or an independent method.

Calling an informal statement “proved”

Symptom: a solver or language model supplies persuasive prose without a checked formal artifact. Recovery: write the proposition in Lean, Coq/Rocq, or Isabelle/HOL and run the checker. If the formal statement is difficult to write, that is evidence the claim still needs clarification.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Formalizing the wrong theorem

Symptom: the assistant accepts the proof, but the result does not match the intended real-world claim. Recovery: test definitions against concrete examples, document units and edge cases, and have a subject expert review the specification.

Expecting automation to remove all human work

Symptom: tactics fail because imports, types, or side conditions are missing. Recovery: isolate a smaller goal, inspect its type, add only the required assumptions, and prove helper lemmas before invoking larger automation.

Comparing unlike benchmarks

Symptom: a consumer solver’s feature list is treated as an accuracy benchmark, or one theorem-prover result is generalized to all models. Recovery: keep product capabilities, formal benchmark scores, and kernel verification as separate categories of evidence.

The strongest workflow is usually hybrid

  1. Use a solver to normalize notation, calculate examples, plot behavior, or suggest candidate lemmas.
  2. Read the output critically and identify assumptions, domains, and exceptional cases.
  3. Write the important claim as a formal proposition in the chosen assistant.
  4. Use libraries and automation to construct a proof, while checking each generated step in the assistant.
  5. Run the complete project from a clean environment and preserve the source, imports, and dependency information.
  6. Present the human-readable explanation alongside the machine-checked artifact so readers understand both the idea and the guarantee.

This division of labor keeps the fast, exploratory strengths of AI solvers while reserving formal verification for claims where reproducibility and trust justify the additional work.

Bottom line

Pick an AI math solver when speed, image input, routine computation, or an accessible explanation is the priority. Pick a proof assistant when you need a formal, repeatable proof or a verified software property. If the claim starts as an informal idea but will eventually carry serious consequences, use both: explore with the solver, then formalize and let the proof assistant’s checker decide whether the stated theorem is actually proved.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can an AI math solver guarantee that its answer is correct?

No universal guarantee follows from a solver’s step-by-step display or product description. Check the input, assumptions, and result independently, especially for high-stakes work.

Does a proof assistant understand a photographed problem?

Not by itself. You must translate the photographed or informal problem into a formal statement before Lean, Coq/Rocq, or Isabelle/HOL can check a proof.

Is Lean only for mathematicians?

No. Lean is also a functional programming language and can support verified software, but learning types, formal specifications, and proof tactics adds work beyond ordinary programming.

What’s actually slowing this PC down?

Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Can Sledgehammer or another tactic prove anything automatically?

Automation can solve many goals, but it operates within the formal environment and assumptions you provide. A generated suggestion matters only after the proof assistant reconstructs and accepts it.

Should students use a solver instead of learning the mathematics?

Use solver steps as feedback and examples, then reproduce the reasoning yourself and verify the result. Blindly copying a generated derivation does not build understanding or reveal recognition errors.
