There is no single best math solver among ChatGPT, Wolfram|Alpha, and Lean. ChatGPT is best for conversational explanations and guided learning, Wolfram|Alpha for computed numerical or symbolic results, and Lean for machine-checked formal proofs. Choose according to the output and verification standard you need, not an overall accuracy score.

At a glance: which tool should you choose?

These tools solve different problems. A natural-language explanation, a computed expression, and a proof term are not interchangeable outputs, so a fair comparison starts with the task rather than a single accuracy ranking.

Tool What you give it What it returns or checks How verification works Best reason to choose it
ChatGPT A question, word problem, image, or follow-up request in ordinary language Explanations, worked guidance, dialogue, and—where supported—interactive math and science modules You inspect the reasoning and independently check important results; a conversational answer is not itself a machine-checked proof You want a concept explained, a solution coached, or a problem explored interactively
Wolfram|Alpha A mathematical expression or a plain-language query that the engine can interpret Numerical and symbolic calculations, equations, plots, unit conversions, and other quantitative results Its algorithms and knowledge base perform the computation; you still need to confirm that the input was interpreted as intended You want a direct calculation or structured quantitative output
Lean 4 Formal definitions, theorem statements, and tactics or proof terms written in Lean A proof term accepted or rejected by Lean’s kernel The minimal kernel checks that the proof follows from the formal assumptions You need a reproducible, machine-checked proof or software verification

Which AI is best for solving math problems?

The answer depends on what “solving” means in your situation:

  • For learning, brainstorming, or asking “why?”, start with ChatGPT.
  • For an equation, derivative, integral, graph, conversion, or numerical value, use Wolfram|Alpha.
  • For a theorem whose validity must be mechanically certified, formalize it in Lean.

Official documentation describes these distinct functions, not a controlled head-to-head test on identical problems. No reliable source establishes a universal winner for accuracy, speed, or user outcomes. Results also depend on the problem class, software version, input wording, and what counts as a correct answer. A calculation can be based on a misinterpreted expression; an articulate explanation can contain an error; and a Lean proof certifies only the statement and assumptions you encoded.

ChatGPT: explanations, dialogue, and guided problem solving

What ChatGPT is good at

ChatGPT accepts ordinary language, so you can ask it to explain a concept at a particular level, work through an example one step at a time, compare two methods, or identify where your algebra went wrong. It can keep a conversational thread: after an initial answer, you can request a simpler explanation, a visual intuition, a different method, or a new example with changed numbers. That makes it useful when the goal is understanding rather than merely obtaining a value.

OpenAI documents interactive learning features for mathematics and science. Its release notes dated March 10, 2026, describe a rollout covering 70+ math and science topics, with examples such as the Pythagorean theorem, the ideal gas law, circle area, and lens equations. The notes describe availability to logged-in users across consumer and business plans during rollout; your account, workspace, and region can affect which interactive features you see. The feature count is a product-scope figure, not an accuracy measurement. See the ChatGPT release notes.

How to use it safely for calculations

ChatGPT can produce a plausible-looking derivation even when a sign, exponent, unit, or premise is wrong. For schoolwork, engineering, finance, or any result with consequences, treat the response as a proposed solution:

  1. State the problem completely, including units, domain restrictions, rounding rules, and what each variable means.
  2. Ask for the method and intermediate steps, not only the final number.
  3. Check the result with a second method, a numerical substitution, a graph, or an independent computational tool.
  4. Ask ChatGPT to test limiting cases, dimensions, or boundary conditions; these checks often expose an unnoticed assumption.
  5. Keep the original problem separate from the generated explanation so you can verify every transformation.

When a Wolfram connection helps

OpenAI’s documentation for its Wolfram plugin for ChatGPT describes a workflow in which a language model turns a request into Wolfram Language, obtains the exact computed result, and incorporates that result into the response. This can combine a conversational explanation with a computation, but availability depends on plan and workspace settings. The integration does not turn every ChatGPT response into a formal proof, and you should still inspect how the question was translated.

Wolfram|Alpha: a computational knowledge engine

What it computes

Wolfram|Alpha is designed around computation rather than a conversational lesson. Its official FAQ says: “It’s a computational knowledge engine: it generates output by doing computations from the Wolfram Knowledgebase, instead of searching the web and returning links.” Its mathematics coverage includes algebra, calculus, geometry, number theory, and discrete mathematics, alongside numerical questions and plots. You can enter a direct expression such as an integral, an equation, or a unit conversion, or phrase a supported request in plain language.

  • Thin Design and lightweight with easy touchpad navigation.Quick alpha keys
  • Six different graph styles and 15 colors to select from for differentiating the look of each graph drawn

The main advantage is a structured result: values, transformations, graphs, and related quantities appear in a format intended for inspection. This is often faster than asking a conversational model to reproduce routine arithmetic or symbolic manipulation.

Can Wolfram|Alpha show steps?

Step-by-step features are available for math topics, but the exact presentation depends on the query and the account features enabled. Enter the expression, inspect the interpreted input first, and open the available step-by-step or related-result controls. If the system parsed an ambiguous notation differently from your intention, correct the input before trusting the displayed derivation. A sequence of computed steps demonstrates how the engine transformed the interpreted expression; it is not the same thing as a Lean proof object.

Limits and access

Wolfram|Alpha’s FAQ says the service can handle public or known information and is subject to computation-time limits. Very large searches, unusual data, or requests outside its knowledge base may fail or return a limited result. Personal noncommercial use is free. The FAQ also describes a Pro subscription with enhanced features and ad-free site use, but it does not establish a current price or guarantee that a particular feature is included in every region or plan. Check the Wolfram|Alpha FAQs before relying on current plan details.

Lean 4: formalization and kernel-checked proofs

What Lean verifies

The Lean Language Reference describes Lean as “an interactive theorem prover based on dependent type theory, designed for use both in cutting-edge mathematics and in software verification.” You express definitions, assumptions, and a theorem in Lean’s language, then construct a proof term. Lean’s minimal kernel checks that term against the formal statement. If the term type-checks, the kernel has verified the encoded claim from the encoded assumptions.

This is a stronger verification standard than asking whether an explanation looks convincing, but it shifts work to the user: the informal problem must first be translated into precise definitions, types, and hypotheses. A proof of the wrong formalization can be perfectly valid while failing to answer the intended real-world question.

What a Lean workflow involves

  1. Define the objects and operations involved, including their types.
  2. State the theorem with every needed hypothesis, such as positivity, continuity, or finiteness.
  3. Write a proof using Lean tactics, existing lemmas, or explicit proof terms.
  4. Run Lean so its kernel checks the resulting term and reports any error.
  5. Refine the statement or proof when the formal assumptions do not match the intended mathematics.

Lean is an interactive development environment and programming language, not a chat-style calculator. Its official learning materials include Theorem Proving in Lean 4 and Mathematics in Lean; the Learn Lean portal links to those resources. The current reference page identifies the manual as covering Lean 4.35.0-rc4, a release-candidate version. Lean changes frequently, so check the documentation for the version installed in your project.

Lean beyond textbook proofs

The Lean project also positions the language for software verification and development. The same type-theoretic foundation can express properties of programs, data structures, and algorithms. That makes Lean appropriate when an organization needs a proof that can be replayed and checked, but usually excessive for a one-off arithmetic answer.

Is ChatGPT or Wolfram|Alpha better at math?

Neither is universally better; they optimize for different outputs. Use this task-based comparison:

Task Prefer Reason What to verify
Learn why the quadratic formula works ChatGPT It can adapt the explanation, ask questions, and supply progressively harder examples Algebraic transformations and the final substitution
Evaluate a definite integral or solve a numerical equation Wolfram|Alpha It is built to compute symbolic and numerical results directly Domain, branch choices, assumptions, and interpreted input
Plot a function and inspect behavior Wolfram|Alpha Its output is organized around computed plots and related quantities Axes, units, ranges, and singularities
Get a tailored hint without seeing the answer immediately ChatGPT You can request hints, Socratic questions, or a partial derivation Each step before using it in submitted work
Certify a theorem for a formal mathematics or software project Lean Its kernel checks a proof term against a formal statement That the formal statement captures the intended claim and assumptions

Can ChatGPT solve math accurately?

It can solve many problems, but conversational fluency is not a guarantee of correctness. Accuracy depends on the prompt, the problem’s ambiguity, the arithmetic involved, and whether the model has a reliable computation available. For a high-stakes answer, use the following review routine:

  • Disambiguate: write parentheses, units, variable domains, and rounding requirements explicitly.
  • Request a derivation: ask for intermediate equations and an explanation of each assumption.
  • Cross-check: substitute the answer back into the original equation or compare it with an independent computation.
  • Test edge cases: check zero, negative, limiting, or degenerate inputs where applicable.
  • Separate explanation from evidence: treat the prose as guidance unless a separate calculation or formal proof confirms it.

For learning, this workflow preserves ChatGPT’s interactive advantage without treating an unverified response as authoritative.

Which tool can verify a mathematical proof?

Lean is the tool in this comparison designed specifically to verify formal proofs. Wolfram|Alpha can perform a calculation and expose steps, while ChatGPT can explain an argument or help you discover one. Neither output, by itself, is a proof term checked by a small formal kernel.

Lean’s guarantee is precise rather than unlimited: the kernel verifies the encoded theorem relative to the imported libraries, definitions, axioms, and hypotheses. You must therefore audit both the statement and its assumptions. If your theorem says a function is continuous because you supplied continuity as a hypothesis, Lean has checked the deduction—not independently established continuity in the physical world.

How to combine the tools in one workflow

They can complement one another when each is assigned the job it handles best:

  1. Explore with ChatGPT. Describe the problem and ask for definitions, possible methods, and a plain-language plan.
  2. Compute with Wolfram|Alpha. Enter the exact expression, inspect the parsed input, and obtain numerical, symbolic, or graphical output.
  3. Reconcile differences. If the explanation and computation disagree, check units, domains, parentheses, rounding, and hidden assumptions before choosing an answer.
  4. Formalize only when needed. Translate the final claim into Lean when a replayable, machine-checked proof justifies the additional setup.
  5. Document the assumptions. Keep the original statement, the computational input, and the Lean theorem aligned so a later reader can see what was actually established.

OpenAI’s documented Wolfram connection can shorten the handoff between explanation and computation, but a formal Lean verification remains a separate step.

Common failure modes and fixes

  • A ChatGPT answer changes halfway through: restate the original expression and ask it to recompute from the stated assumptions, then verify independently.
  • Wolfram|Alpha returns an unexpected result: inspect the interpreted-input line; add parentheses, units, variable domains, or an explicit operation.
  • A Wolfram query times out or is incomplete: simplify the expression, split the calculation into smaller parts, or remove unsupported data requirements.
  • Lean rejects an apparently obvious proof: check types, imported lemmas, missing hypotheses, and whether the theorem was formalized as intended.
  • A formal Lean proof feels irrelevant: compare the theorem statement with the informal question; a formally valid proof can certify an over-strong assumption or the wrong object.
  • You need a quick answer but start with Lean: use a calculator or Wolfram|Alpha for exploration, reserving formalization for claims that require proof checking.

A practical decision checklist

  • Choose ChatGPT when the main deliverable is an understandable explanation, tutoring dialogue, or guided approach.
  • Choose Wolfram|Alpha when the main deliverable is a computed value, symbolic transformation, plot, or quantitative lookup.
  • Choose Lean when the main deliverable is a proof term that a kernel can check and replay.
  • Use two tools when explanation and computation both matter.
  • Use all three only when the problem warrants exploration, independently checked calculation, and formal verification; the setup cost is otherwise unnecessary.
