AI-powered laptops can protect onboard data well, but the “AI-powered” label is not a security guarantee. On Windows 11 Copilot+ PCs, some documented AI tasks run locally, and Microsoft describes specific protections for its optional Recall feature. Your actual security still depends on settings such as drive encryption, account authentication, Secure Boot, updates, and how each AI feature handles data. This guide focuses on documented Windows 11 Copilot+ PC features; it does not establish how Apple, Chromebook, or third-party AI products handle data.
What does “on-device AI” mean for your data?
Some AI work can be processed locally by a laptop’s neural processing unit (NPU), which can reduce the need to send that task’s working data to a cloud service. Microsoft says its built-in Windows AI components can run locally, and describes Phi Silica as performing language tasks on-device. Those statements apply to the named Windows components and supported experiences—not every AI feature or app you may use.
Check the privacy details for the specific action you take. A feature can rely on local processing for one task while still communicating externally for other purposes. For example, Microsoft says Recall does not need a cloud connection to save and analyze snapshots, and that snapshots are not sent to Microsoft. Its documentation also notes that diagnostic data may be sent depending on privacy settings, and Recall may retrieve website artifacts such as favicons or metadata. “Local” therefore describes a particular data flow, not a promise that the laptop never communicates with external services.

How Recall stores and protects screen snapshots
Recall is an optional Windows feature that can save screen snapshots so you can search past activity. Microsoft’s support documentation labels Recall as a preview feature, so its availability and behavior may change. It is not a permanent feature of every AI laptop.

Microsoft says Recall must be opened and authenticated before it starts saving snapshots. Using a biometric option with Recall requires Windows Hello to be enabled. Microsoft describes snapshots and associated vector data as encrypted, with just-in-time decryption protected by Windows Hello Enhanced Sign-in Security (ESS). Encryption keys are protected through the TPM and a Virtualization-Based Security (VBS) Enclave. Recall’s sensitive-information filter is enabled by default and operates locally to avoid saving snapshots when potentially sensitive information is detected. Treat that as a mitigation, not a guarantee that sensitive content can never be captured. You can review Recall’s capture state and privacy settings, pause it, delete snapshots, and manage storage limits or retention duration.

Microsoft lists a Copilot+ PC meeting Secured-core requirements, a 40 TOPS NPU, 16 GB of RAM, and enabled Device Encryption or BitLocker among Recall’s minimum requirements. The NPU and memory figures are feature requirements—not measurements of security quality.

Device Encryption or BitLocker
Full-disk encryption helps protect stored data if someone gains physical access to a laptop or its drive. Microsoft says Windows 11 Device Encryption or BitLocker is enabled by default, but verify the status on your own machine rather than relying on a product category or default. Recall itself requires Device Encryption or BitLocker to be enabled. Keep recovery information safe and accessible to you; encryption can also make data difficult to recover if you lose access to the key.

TPM and security processors
A Trusted Platform Module (TPM) 2.0 can support key generation and secure storage, encryption, boot-integrity measurements, and attestation. These capabilities underpin protections including Windows Hello and BitLocker. Microsoft describes Pluton as integrated into the system-on-chip on platforms that include it; it can function as a TPM 2.0 or as a separate security processor. Integration can shorten a potentially vulnerable communication path, but these mechanisms do not guarantee safety if an attacker controls an already-unlocked session or exploits vulnerable software.
Configurations vary by model and silicon generation. Microsoft says Copilot+ PCs are Secured-core PCs and include Pluton by default. It also says new AMD and Qualcomm silicon in 2026 will use firmware or discrete TPM functionality rather than Pluton as the TPM, while Pluton remains present as a security processor. Check the exact laptop’s configuration rather than assuming all models use the same TPM arrangement.

Secure Boot and Core isolation
Secure Boot helps prevent rootkits from loading before Windows starts. Core isolation runs core processes in a virtualized environment; Memory integrity is one of the protections associated with it. These controls reduce particular attack paths, but do not replace encryption, account protection, or updates.
To inspect available hardware security status, open Windows Security → Device security. Review the displayed status for the security processor or TPM, Secure Boot, and Core isolation or Memory integrity. The Windows Settings page for Device Encryption or BitLocker shows whether drive encryption is active. Exact labels and availability can vary with Windows edition and device configuration.

How to check an AI laptop before using it
- Identify the data path. For each AI feature you plan to use, check whether the specific task runs on-device or sends information to a service. Review that app or feature’s privacy and retention details; do not infer its behavior from the laptop’s AI branding.
- Verify encryption. In Windows Settings, check Device Encryption or BitLocker and confirm it is on. Make sure you can access the recovery information if you ever need to restore the device.
- Inspect hardware protections. Open Windows Security → Device security and check the status of the TPM or security processor, Secure Boot, and Core isolation.
- Protect sign-in. Use Windows Hello or another strong, unique sign-in method, and protect the account associated with the laptop. A locked-down device is less useful to an attacker than an unattended, unlocked session.
- Keep software current. Install Windows, firmware, driver, and AI-component updates. Microsoft says its built-in AI components are serviced through Windows Update.
- Review Recall if you use it. Check whether capture is active, review its filtering and privacy settings, and choose suitable retention, storage, pause, or deletion options.
- Ask about work-device policies. If your laptop is managed by an employer or school, confirm which device controls, monitoring, and AI-feature policies apply. Microsoft says IT admins cannot access or view Recall snapshots on end-user devices, but that does not establish how every organizational configuration or other product handles data.
How to compare AI laptops for data security
Compare specific configurations and documented behavior, not AI branding or NPU performance figures alone. Microsoft’s feature requirements describe compatibility, not demonstrated resistance to attacks. For a Copilot+ PC, check the particular model’s hardware and the security settings you can verify.

What these protections do—and do not—prove
Microsoft’s documentation explains how particular Windows features are designed to work; it is not an independent audit or a comparative test of laptop security. The available evidence does not establish that AI laptops as a class have fewer breaches, or that any model is immune to malware, account compromise, physical access, vulnerable apps, or unsafe cloud-connected services. Local processing and hardware-backed controls can reduce specific exposures, but the outcome depends on the device’s configuration and how you use it.
