AI is taking over much of the repetitive work behind simple websites, putting pressure on low-complexity coding gigs and making do-it-yourself sites practical for more small businesses. But the evidence does not show that web development as an occupation has collapsed. Demand is moving toward people who can define requirements, connect systems, test results, protect data and take responsibility when an AI-generated site fails.
What the latest evidence actually shows
Routine implementation is being repriced
The clearest effect is productivity. An OECD-cited study published in 2024 found that developers using GitHub Copilot completed tasks 55% faster. When a landing page, product description, basic form or standard component can be produced in a fraction of the previous time, clients have less reason to pay for hours spent typing boilerplate code.
That does not mean the finished product is automatically production-ready. Faster generation shifts effort toward writing a precise specification, checking the output, integrating it with a real business system and fixing the cases an AI model did not anticipate.

Upwork Research Institute reported a 40% increase in small-business demand for artificial-intelligence and machine-learning skills in August 2025. The platform says more than 1 million jobs are posted on Upwork annually, and jobs in which coding represented at least 25% of the work paid 11% more than comparable work did in November 2022. Those figures indicate a market that is rewarding AI-capable technical work alongside applying pressure to repetitive assignments; they are not proof of a universal collapse in freelance coding.

Employment projections still point to growth
The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics projects 5% employment growth for web developers and digital designers from 2025 through 2035. That projection covers a broad occupational category and can be moderated by faster AI tools, but it is inconsistent with the claim that web-development work has simply vanished. The more defensible interpretation is a change in the task mix and in the skills clients are willing to pay for.
Why small-business owners are adopting AI websites
Adoption has moved into the mainstream
The U.S. Chamber of Commerce reported that 58% of small businesses used generative AI in 2025, up from 40% in 2024 and 23% in 2023. For a small company, generating a first draft of a home page, service descriptions, email copy or search snippets can remove a major delay before a site ever reaches a designer or developer.

Henry’s House of Coffee owner Hrag Kalebjian described the practical appeal: “AI has been a game-changer for Henry’s House of Coffee, allowing us to streamline tasks like product descriptions, SEO, and marketing emails.” That is a statement about workflow efficiency, not evidence that AI independently delivered a complete, reliable web platform.

Clutch reported in 2025 that 83% of small businesses had a website. Among the businesses covered by that survey, 45% outsourced development, 37% handled it in-house and 8% built the site themselves. Clutch web-design lead Jeanette Godreau summarized the lower barrier to entry by saying that small businesses no longer require a large budget or an in-house developer to build a professional website.

Positive experiences are real, but “very happy” is too broad
Squarespace’s 2025 survey found that 55% of surveyed entrepreneurs used AI to create website copy. A 2026 Squarespace Circle industry survey found that 46% of surveyed web designers used AI to help build websites and 88% said it had a positive impact on their process. Yet only 5% said they were comfortable with AI handling any work-related task. These company-sponsored survey results support strong interest and workflow gains, not a conclusion that owners universally prefer AI-built sites or that the sites produce more revenue.
What AI can build well—and where it still needs an expert
Good candidates for self-service generation
- Landing pages assembled from a clear brief and a small set of calls to action.
- First drafts of product, service and frequently asked question copy.
- Basic layouts, color and spacing suggestions, and common responsive components.
- Boilerplate HTML, CSS and JavaScript for familiar patterns.
- Routine content updates after a human has established the design system and publishing rules.
Work that requires deliberate human review
- Authentication, authorization, payments and customer-account data.
- Connections to inventory, booking, customer-relationship, accounting or other business systems.
- Security controls, secrets management, dependency updates and incident response.
- Accessibility testing with real assistive-technology scenarios rather than a passing automated score alone.
- Analytics and consent configuration, especially where personal data or regulated information is involved.
- Unusual workflows, complex calculations, multilingual edge cases and requirements that were not stated in the original prompt.
AI can generate a layout and suggest best practices, but it cannot replace the intuition, empathy and relationship-building needed to turn a technically valid page into an effective user experience. That distinction is why a fast first draft and a dependable production website are different deliverables.
Choosing between self-service AI, an AI-assisted freelancer and custom development
The right option depends less on whether AI is available than on the consequences of failure. The cost labels below are relative decision guidance, not quoted market prices; actual fees vary by scope, region, platform and maintenance agreement.

| Decision factor | AI self-service | AI-assisted freelancer | Traditional custom engagement |
|---|---|---|---|
| Upfront cost | Lowest in most simple cases; software, hosting and optional human help still add recurring costs. | Moderate; you pay for judgment, setup, review and integration as well as generated output. | Highest for a comparable scope because discovery, design, engineering and testing are staffed explicitly. |
| Delivery speed | Fastest for a standard brochure or landing site. | Fast when the freelancer uses AI for drafts, with time reserved for review and revisions. | Slowest when the project requires discovery, custom architecture and formal testing. |
| Customization | Strong for common templates; limited when the business needs unusual behavior. | High for many small and mid-sized sites because a person can adapt generated code. | Highest control over architecture, interaction design and long-term extensibility. |
| Security and integrations | Suitable only when the platform’s built-in features cover the need and settings are checked. | Can connect systems, but the client should require a documented review of permissions, secrets and failure handling. | Best fit for bespoke integrations, sensitive data and formal security requirements. |
| SEO and content quality | Produces a useful draft but can repeat claims, miss search intent or publish inaccurate information. | Combines machine drafting with fact-checking, editorial judgment and measurement. | Supports a full content, technical-SEO and information-architecture process when that is in scope. |
| Maintenance responsibility | Usually remains with the owner unless a support plan is purchased. | Can be shared under a clearly written retainer or support agreement. | Normally defined in a continuing maintenance contract; it is not automatic after launch. |
| Human accountability | Mostly the owner’s responsibility for claims, settings, privacy and outages. | A named professional can review and explain decisions, but accountability should be written into the agreement. | Most formal accountability when acceptance criteria, testing and support obligations are documented. |
| Edge cases | Weakest; unexpected requirements often produce brittle workarounds. | Good for many edge cases if the freelancer has relevant domain experience. | Best for novel, regulated or mission-critical behavior. |
A practical evaluation process for a business owner
- Define the outcome before choosing a tool. Write down the pages, audiences, conversion action, data collected, integrations and legal or accessibility requirements.
- Separate low-risk content from high-risk behavior. Let AI draft copy and a basic layout, but identify payments, accounts, personal data, bookings and other functions that need deliberate engineering.
- Ask for an inspectable build. Require access to the domain, hosting, source or export where applicable, analytics account and a list of third-party services. A site that cannot be maintained or moved is a long-term dependency, not a finished asset.
- Test the paths that matter to the business. Submit forms, complete checkout or booking flows, test password recovery, inspect mobile layouts, run keyboard navigation and verify that analytics records the intended events.
- Fact-check every generated claim. Confirm prices, availability, service areas, policies, testimonials, medical or financial language and search snippets before publishing.
- Assign maintenance explicitly. Decide who applies updates, watches uptime, reviews security alerts, renews services, handles backups and responds when an integration breaks.
- Measure business results after launch. Track qualified inquiries, completed purchases, bookings or other agreed outcomes rather than treating a polished first draft as proof of success.
What freelancers need to sell now
Specification becomes a billable skill
A client can ask an AI system for a page; fewer clients can describe the data model, permissions, error states and acceptance tests that make the page dependable. Freelancers who turn an ambiguous business goal into a testable specification create value before code generation begins.
Integration and verification differentiate the work
Connecting a site to a payment processor, inventory source, CRM or analytics system requires decisions about authentication, retries, privacy and what happens when a service is unavailable. Reviewing generated code for insecure defaults, inaccessible markup, inaccurate content and hidden dependencies is also specialized work.
Best Value
Accountability is part of the product
Clients still need someone to explain trade-offs, document what was deployed and respond when the generated solution behaves differently in production. AI can reduce the time required to implement a decision; it does not assume responsibility for the consequences.
The practical verdict
AI is making routine website work cheaper and faster, so the least differentiated coding gigs are under real pressure. At the same time, adoption data, platform demand for AI-capable talent and the BLS growth projection all point to a transition rather than an occupation-wide collapse. A small business can often launch a credible simple site with AI, but quality depends on review, testing, security and ongoing ownership. Freelance web development remains viable when it solves those harder problems instead of selling undifferentiated boilerplate.
