AI is not a separate category of crypto thief, but it is making familiar attacks faster, more convincing and easier to adapt. Recent incidents and research show attackers using AI to create fake trading tools, study wallet software, alter malware during execution and manipulate the context of wallet-connected agents. Personal wallets are now a significant target, while even institutional multisig and cold-wallet setups can fail when people trust a deceptive interface.
How AI is changing the attack chain
The important shift is operational rather than magical: AI can improve several stages of an attack at once, from the first lure to the final transaction approval.
Fake AI-agent downloads deliver wallet malware
Attackers advertise a supposed AI trading agent or automation utility, then use the download to install malware. HP observed malware scanning browsers for wallet extensions, replacing trusted extensions with malicious copies and harvesting credentials. A fake extension can look familiar while sending recovery phrases, passwords or session data to the attacker.

In HP’s April–June 2026 data, executable files accounted for 40% of malware delivery and archives for 38%. Those figures describe malware delivery overall, not crypto theft alone, but they show why a polished attachment or installer cannot be treated as safe merely because it passed an email filter.

“Attackers are tapping into Agentic AI tool adoption to invest in new lures that trick users into downloading malicious software that looks legitimate. This tactic makes malware delivery more polished and harder to detect.” — Patrick Schläpfer, HP Wolf Security, September 17, 2026.
AI-assisted reconnaissance and adaptive malware
Google’s Mandiant review describes a 2025 change from using AI mainly as a productivity aid to using it as operational attack infrastructure. Attackers can use large language models to research unfamiliar wallet applications, connect APIs to malware and generate commands for a particular victim or environment.
Mandiant’s examples include PROMPTFLUX, which can rewrite its code during execution, and PROMPTSTEAL, which generated Windows commands for document theft. Code that changes while running is harder to match with a fixed signature, increasing the value of behavior monitoring, application allowlists and isolating wallet activity from general browsing.

Prompt and memory poisoning can steer wallet-connected agents
An AI agent that can read a wallet, call a trading protocol or submit a transaction inherits a new attack surface: its context. A malicious prompt, poisoned memory entry or manipulated external data feed can make the agent treat an attacker’s instruction as legitimate.

- Trusted by 6 million users worldwide - buy, sell, swap, stake, and spend cryptocurrency directly. The secure offline storage wallet designed for how people actually use crypto wallets
A March 20, 2025 study by Patlan, Sheng, Hebbar, Mittal and Viswanath found in ElizaOS experiments that adversaries could manipulate context “by injecting malicious instructions into prompts or historical interaction records, leading to unintended asset transfers and protocol violations which could be financially devastating.” This is different from phishing a human, but the consequence is similar if the agent has authority to move funds.
Why personal wallets are attracting more attention
Chainalysis reported that more than $2.17 billion was stolen from cryptocurrency services by mid-2025. In the same analysis, personal-wallet compromises represented 23.35% of stolen-fund activity by that point. The percentage covers stolen-fund activity attributed to personal-wallet compromises; it is not a measure of AI-caused theft.
Personal wallets are attractive because they are numerous, often managed from ordinary browsers and sometimes connected directly to decentralized applications, extensions, bots or messaging links. A single compromised computer or deceptive approval can expose assets without an attacker breaching a major exchange.
The Bybit breach shows why “cold” and “multisig” are not guarantees
Approximately $1.5 billion was stolen in the 2025 Bybit breach, according to Chainalysis and Check Point Research. Check Point’s analysis says attackers compromised infrastructure and manipulated the transaction data and interface shown to signers, then redirected delegated execution. The analysis did not identify a smart-contract vulnerability.

“This hack sets a new precedent in crypto security by bypassing a multisig cold wallet without exploiting any smart contract vulnerability. Instead, it exploited human trust and UI deception.” — Check Point Research, February 23, 2025.
The lesson is narrow but important: multisignature approval and offline key storage reduce some risks, yet they do not help if several signers are shown a fraudulent transaction and approve it. Signers must verify the actual destination, amount, contract and requested operation through an independent channel rather than trusting one screen or coordination system.
Controls that match the current attack surface
| Security question | What stronger practice looks like |
|---|---|
| Where are keys held? | Use online hot wallets only for limited working balances; use hardware or offline signing to reduce continuous online key exposure. |
| Can the signer verify intent? | Require an independent display or channel that shows the destination, amount and contract details before approval. |
| What can an AI agent do? | Prefer read-only access, capped spending, allowlisted contracts and mandatory human approval for irreversible actions. |
| How much software is connected? | Minimize browser extensions, downloads, QR codes, APIs and third-party integrations on the device used to sign. |
| How fast can you recover? | Keep seed backups secure, monitor accounts, revoke suspicious approvals and be ready to move remaining funds from a clean environment. |
Are AI trading bots and wallet agents safe?
Assume an AI trading bot is untrusted until you can verify its publisher, install source, permissions and transaction policy independently. An attractive dashboard or natural-language explanation does not prove that the software will call the intended contract or protect your credentials.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Before installing an AI wallet tool
- Obtain the installer or extension only from a source you can verify independently; do not use a link in an unsolicited email, message or advertisement.
- Check whether the tool needs a private key, seed phrase or unrestricted signing authority. A service that demands full custody for routine analysis is exposing more than is necessary.
- Use a separate wallet with a capped balance for experiments. Keep long-term holdings outside any agent’s default reach.
- Require transaction simulation and a human confirmation step. Review the destination, amount, token approvals and contract address on a trusted display.
- Monitor activity and revoke approvals promptly if the tool behaves unexpectedly.
Is a hardware wallet safe from hackers?
A hardware wallet can keep private keys away from a continuously connected computer, which reduces online key exposure. It cannot make a user immune to phishing, a stolen recovery phrase, malicious firmware or deceptive signing information.

The practical test is whether the device independently presents the transaction you are about to authorize and whether you compare it with the intended operation. If the computer or coordination software displays one transaction while the signer approves another, hardware protection alone does not solve the problem.
What to do if a fake wallet extension is installed
- Stop using the affected browser and disconnect the device from the network. Do not enter another password or recovery phrase on it.
- From a clean, trusted device, move remaining assets to a newly created wallet whose recovery phrase has never touched the compromised system.
- Revoke token approvals and application permissions associated with the exposed wallet, then review recent transactions for unauthorized activity.
- Change passwords and enable stronger account protection for email, exchanges and other services tied to the wallet. Treat any credentials entered after the suspected installation as compromised.
- Remove the malicious extension, preserve relevant evidence and reinstall the operating system or browser if you cannot establish that the device is clean.
What can—and cannot—be attributed to AI
The evidence supports a clear escalation in AI-assisted capability and targeting of personal wallets. It does not support labeling every major crypto theft as an AI theft, and no authoritative figure in the cited reporting isolates dollars stolen solely because of AI.
For users, the distinction changes the defense less than it changes the diagnosis: protect against the complete chain. Verify downloads and extensions, limit agent permissions, isolate keys where practical, inspect transaction intent independently and maintain a recovery plan that does not depend on the compromised device.
