AI inference is what happens when a trained model processes new input and produces an output. When you send a question to a chatbot, for example, inference is the work that turns your prompt into a response. Training adjusts a model’s parameters using data; inference applies the parameters it has learned.
What does inference mean in AI?
Inference is the use of a trained AI model to make a prediction or generate an output from new input. A classifier might assign a label to an image; a language model might produce text in response to a prompt. The model uses its learned parameters, but inference itself does not mean that those parameters are being retrained.
A useful, limited analogy is practice versus performance: training is like practice, and inference is like using what was learned. It is only an analogy. More precisely, training updates model parameters based on data, while inference runs the model on input to obtain a prediction or generated output. NVIDIA explains the distinction and the inference process.

Training builds or adapts a model by adjusting its parameters. Inference applies the trained model to new input. The distinction affects how systems are run, but the typical workload differences below are not universal rules.

| Aspect | Training | Inference |
|---|---|---|
| Purpose | Learn or adjust model parameters from training data. | Apply a trained model to new input to produce an output. |
| Typical work pattern | Planned runs, often optimized for throughput and accelerator utilization. | Continuous or bursty requests, often sensitive to response time and concurrency. |
| Common bottlenecks | Compute, data pipelines, convergence, and checkpoint handling. | Model and request-state memory, latency, scaling, and serving efficiency. |
| Cost pattern | Often tied to provisioned hardware and run duration. | Often usage-driven, with the possibility of idle capacity or demand spikes. |
| Security context | May run in a controlled internal environment. | Customer-facing serving may require tenant isolation, API key management, encryption, and compliance controls. |
AWS describes training workloads as typically predictable, compute-bound, and throughput-oriented, while inference workloads are often less predictable, memory-bound, and latency-sensitive. These are general patterns, not a rule for every model or deployment. AWS Prescriptive Guidance outlines the differences.
What happens when you ask an AI a question?
For a large language model (LLM), a prompt is processed as tokens rather than as a finished answer retrieved by definition from a database. The model processes the input, then generates output tokens; those tokens are converted into readable text.
- Input processing (prefill): The system turns the prompt into tokens and processes them as input to the model.
- Output generation (decode): The model generates response tokens, typically one after another.
- Text assembly: The generated tokens are converted into text for the user.
Training takes place while a model is being built or adapted. Inference takes place whenever a deployed model handles a new request. The steps above describe an LLM response at a high level; other kinds of AI models may produce labels, scores, or other outputs instead of text. NVIDIA describes the LLM request flow.

Why do inference speed and cost matter?
Inference is the point at which an AI feature responds to a real input. Users experience the wait for a response to start and finish; operators need to serve requests at an acceptable cost and scale. Priorities can conflict: using smaller batches or allocating more resources may help reduce latency, while batching requests can improve throughput and utilization.
- Time to first token (TTFT): Time from a request until the first output token appears.
- Time per output token (TPOT): Average delay associated with each generated token after the first-token phase.
- Request latency: Elapsed time for the complete request.
- Throughput: Requests or tokens served over time.
Requests per second alone can mislead when prompt and response lengths differ. A meaningful comparison needs a comparable workload, including prompt and output lengths, concurrency, hardware, and measurement method. There is no universal speed threshold that makes an inference setup “fast.” Google Cloud defines these metrics and discusses inference performance planning.

No. Inference is a computation, not a particular kind of hardware. Depending on the model, workload, deployment, and performance target, it can run on a CPU or an accelerator such as a GPU. A GPU may be useful for some workloads, but it is not a conceptual prerequisite for inference. AWS’s inference stack includes CPU and accelerator options, and Google for Developers discusses CPU and GPU inference.

Where can inference run?
Inference may be provided as a service, run on managed infrastructure, or hosted on infrastructure an organization manages itself. The options chiefly differ in how much infrastructure work the operator takes on and how much control they retain.
- Serverless inference: Minimizes infrastructure management.
- Managed inference: Balances operational simplicity with configuration control.
- Self-managed inference: Gives the organization more control over infrastructure and software, while requiring it to manage more of the deployment.
These are deployment approaches, not different meanings of inference. The right choice depends on operational effort, control, scaling needs, latency and throughput targets, costs, accelerator availability, and security requirements. AWS describes these layers in its inference stack guidance.
