AI is changing ERP and warehouse work most credibly when it has reliable operational data and a clearly defined process to support. Current examples include cleaning records before an ERP rollout, forecasting demand to inform warehouse stock levels, and joining warehouse and workforce data for better visibility. Robots using ERP or warehouse context are more experimental: the documented examples are proofs of concept and scenario tests, not evidence that autonomous warehouses are broadly production-ready.

How do ERP, warehouse systems and AI fit together?

An ERP system typically manages enterprise records and processes, while warehouse management software (WMS) can handle physical logistics such as receiving, picking and shipping. They may be part of one product or separate systems. The important design question is which system owns each record and task, and how information moves between them.

A warehouse can operate alongside an external ERP

Microsoft documents a “warehouse management only” mode for Dynamics 365 Supply Chain Management. In that arrangement, the warehouse system handles logistics while an external ERP continues to manage order and financial processing. The external ERP sends an inbound shipment order; warehouse workers register transactions in a mobile app; and receipt information returns to the ERP for follow-on processing. Outbound orders and packing-slip records move through a comparable exchange.

  1. The ERP sends the warehouse an inbound order or outbound request.
  2. Warehouse staff record receiving, handling or shipping activity in the warehouse application.
  3. Shipment or receipt records pass back to the ERP so the wider order and financial process can continue.

This is an example of an integration boundary, not a requirement to combine ERP and WMS into one product. The precise messages and responsibilities depend on the architecture.

AI depends on connected, governed information

AI does not replace the underlying ERP or warehouse foundation. Forecasts, analytics and automated workflows are only useful when relevant information—such as products, locations, inventory and workforce activity—is consistent and available to the process using it. The examples below show AI or AI readiness as part of a broader data and process setup, rather than as a stand-alone feature.

Where is AI already being applied?

Preparing and reconciling data for ERP modernization

In a Microsoft Customer Stories case published in 2021, Pack’n Fresh reportedly had inconsistent records in which 1,050 products appeared as more than 7,000 SKUs across its systems. Its implementation partners used Azure Machine Learning and Power BI to deduplicate data in two weeks, then deployed Dynamics 365 Business Central in parallel. The case says accounting, sales, purchasing, warehousing and inventory management were connected in eight weeks. These are timings reported for this company’s project, not a general ERP implementation estimate.

The same Microsoft case reports that daily tactical decision-making time fell from six hours to thirty minutes after the company introduced a dashboard and connected system. That is a company-specific, vendor-published result, not a controlled estimate of typical AI impact. Separately, Vish Puttagunta, President and CTO of Power Central, described decisions by the CEO falling to 20 minutes a day from more than 20 hours a week spent relying on spreadsheets. The statement concerns that company’s experience and should not be treated as an independent benchmark.

Joining warehouse and workforce data for operational visibility

Microsoft’s customer story about European logistics provider Logicall describes data silos and inconsistent reporting after growth through mergers. Logicall built a central data platform using Azure and Fabric, with Purview for governance and Power BI for analytics and reporting. The company says this provides near-real-time operational visibility and a foundation for future intelligent agents.

That foundation is a data and analytics capability, not evidence that autonomous agents are already running warehouse operations. Logicall Operations Director Rutger van Esseveld said, “In warehouse operations, everything depends on timing, accuracy, and coordination.” CEO Mark van den Assem described AI as a possible next step for automating operations, improving decisions and scaling. These are executives’ statements in a Microsoft-published customer story.

Forecasting demand to inform warehouse stock

SAP’s customer story about Swarovski describes AI-based demand forecasts being used to optimize warehouse stock levels across regions. The broader program connected finance, supply chain, retail and e-commerce, while reducing fragmented solutions and emphasizing standardization and data harmonization. SAP presents the migration as a business transformation with defined scope and change-management discipline—not simply an AI installation.

In SAP’s account, Swarovski executive Christine Sonderegger said that simplification and returning to standard solutions improve data consistency, support reliable processes and make the organization more agile. The forecast use case and transformation details are reported by SAP; they do not establish a typical outcome for other companies.

Are ERP-connected warehouse robots ready for production?

The documented robotics examples are exploratory. In a November 2025 report, SAP described a proof of concept involving Bosch, SAP and Aimbo in which a humanoid robot performed warehouse tasks using SAP Extended Warehouse Management context, including delivery data, order priorities and storage locations. SAP says the work was in an exploration phase and validated in dedicated beta and test-system environments.

The same report describes a Vodafone warehouse scenario test involving inspections and inventory context. Together, these examples show a possible connection between enterprise records and physical execution. They do not establish broad commercial readiness, comparative productivity or widespread deployment. Bosch Digital’s Head of CoE ERP Product Excellence, Gamze Öztürk, characterized the collaboration as a step toward autonomous operations, but the statement appeared in the context of the proof of concept.

How should you assess an ERP or warehouse AI project?

Compare projects by what they do in the workflow and by the quality of their evidence—not just by whether a supplier calls them AI. These criteria reflect the integration documentation and customer examples above; they are not a ranking of vendors.

Decision area Questions to settle
Process ownership Which system owns orders, financial processing, inventory records, warehouse tasks and final shipment confirmation?
Integration What messages, APIs or events pass among ERP, WMS, data platform and equipment? How are failed or duplicated transactions detected and reconciled?
Data quality and governance Are product, location, inventory and workforce records accurate, deduplicated and governed? Who is responsible for correcting them?
Operational visibility Can warehouse teams and business leaders see timely, consistent status and traceable activity across system boundaries?
Automation and oversight Does AI prepare information, recommend a decision, initiate a workflow or control physical execution? Where does a person review or intervene?
Evidence maturity Is the capability a reported customer deployment, an announced feature, a proof of concept or a test? Is there independent outcome data?
Implementation and change Is the process standardized and phased? Are teams prepared to maintain the data, integrations and workflows after go-live?

Separate a useful data foundation from an AI outcome

A central platform, data cleanup or connected ERP can make later analysis and automation more feasible. Those steps are not themselves proof that an AI system has improved warehouse performance. Define the operational result you want to measure—such as forecast usefulness or the time needed to reconcile a transaction—and distinguish it from implementation activity.

Read vendor case studies at the right level

Customer stories from Microsoft and SAP are useful for understanding what a named organization says it implemented. They are not independent evaluations, and results such as Pack’n Fresh’s reported decision-time changes should not be generalized. Kearney’s 2026 consulting report describes a direction toward AI-enabled and more agentic ERP, including conversational interactions and specialized agents. That is analysis of vendor developments, not neutral validation that all such capabilities are mature or produce the same results in production.

What the available examples do—and do not—establish

The cases show practical patterns: data deduplication during modernization, forecasting connected to stock decisions, and consolidated data for shared visibility. They also show why system integration and data governance matter. They do not provide a cross-industry benchmark for productivity gains, an independent comparison of ERP platforms, or typical ROI. The robotics reports describe pilots and tests, not proof that autonomous warehouse operations are broadly ready.
