Artificial intelligence in chemistry is most credible when it tackles a clearly defined problem, learns from strong data, and produces results that can be checked in experiments. Phillip Broadwith’s view is neither that AI can solve every chemical challenge nor that it is merely hype: its value depends on sound problem selection, human chemical judgment, and experimental verification.

How to tell useful AI from an impressive claim

In his 18 August 2026 opinion column for Chemistry World, business editor Phillip Broadwith argues that AI claims in chemistry and materials science should be judged by the work behind them, not by the label. He treats the following as practical questions for evaluating an application, rather than as a formal or universally validated scorecard.

  • Is the problem well defined? A focused task is easier to judge than a broad promise to transform research or cut costs.
  • Is the data suitable? The training data needs to be high quality and relevant to the problem being addressed.
  • Can the output be tested? A prediction becomes more useful when researchers can compare it with an experiment.
  • Can evidence feed back into the work? Testing should help researchers refine the model or its use, including when a prediction fails.
  • Does chemical expertise remain involved? Broadwith favors combining machine learning with human understanding rather than treating a model’s output as self-validating.

These checks also expose a common weakness in adoption arguments. Broadwith interprets some industry interest as competitive fear of missing out and some cost-cutting pitches as too vague to establish what AI will actually improve. That is his assessment, not a measured finding about every organization using AI.

Why protein-structure prediction is a useful example—and not a universal proof

Broadwith points to protein-folding and structure-prediction models recognized by the 2024 Nobel Prize in Chemistry. He emphasizes their foundations: large libraries of crystal-structure data and years of algorithm development. The example shows how a defined scientific task, substantial data, and sustained technical work can support a consequential application.

It does not establish that AI can solve chemistry problems generally. Broadwith gives no numerical performance result for the example, and recognition of these models is not evidence that every AI application has comparable data, validation, or impact.

Materials prediction needs a route from model to matter

For materials science, Broadwith notes that CuspAI has enlisted partners to make and test materials predicted by its models. The relevant point is the connection between a computational prediction and physical testing: experiments can show whether a proposed material can be made and whether it behaves as expected.

The column does not name those partners or quantify the success of the work. The example therefore illustrates an experimental feedback route; it is not, on its own, proof of commercial performance or a general measure of AI’s effectiveness in materials discovery.

Drug discovery: preclinical efficiency is not the same as trial success

Broadwith sees a possible role for AI in reducing time spent making molecules that fail before clinical trials. He also says AI has not yet had much impact on clinical-trial success rates, which he identifies as the major bottleneck. Those are his assessments in an opinion column, not conclusions established there through a systematic dataset or trial-by-trial analysis.

Thames & Kosmos 640132 Chem C3000, Chemistry Set, Includes Components From The Thames and Kosmos C2000 Plus Dozens of Additional Tools and Chemicals, 333 Experiments, 103 Pieces, Experiment Kit, 12+
  • THE ULTIMATE HOME CHEMISTRY SET FOR SERIOUS YOUNG SCIENTISTS — Perform more than 333 hands-on experiments organized into 27 chapters covering inorganic chemistry, organic chemistry, and electrochemistry. Designed and manufactured in Germany to the rigorous EN 71-4 safety standard, CHEM C3000 is the most advanced chemistry kit in the Thames & Kosmos CHEM family and excellent preparation for high school chemistry.
  • 192-PAGE FULL-COLOR EXPERIMENT MANUAL — Far more than instructions, this richly illustrated lab manual reads like a great science book. Clear step-by-step procedures and thorough scientific explanations introduce chemical equations, atomic structure, chemical bonding, the periodic table, acids and bases, redox reactions, electrolysis, halogens, sulfur compounds, ammonia, organic chemistry, esters, fats and soaps, carbohydrates, and proteins.
  • REAL LAB EQUIPMENT FOR AUTHENTIC EXPERIMENTS — Outfit a true home laboratory with glass test tubes, beakers, an Erlenmeyer flask, a tripod stand and alcohol burner, evaporating dish, wire mesh, dropper pipettes, plastic syringe, funnel, filter paper, stoppers, glass and rubber tubing, carbon electrode, copper and zinc sheets, alligator-clip wires, light bulb and socket, test tube stand, and protective safety goggles.
  • A COMPLETE SET OF CHEMICALS FOR DOZENS OF REAL REACTIONS — Investigate genuine chemistry across the full periodic spectrum: inorganic reactions, oxidation and reduction, electrolysis, acid–base chemistry, chromatography, and organic chemistry. A carefully selected chemical inventory (full list in product description) lets students observe real reactions in action, not simulations. A few common household additions (clearly listed in the manual) extend the experiment count further.
  • AGES 12+ WITH ADULT SUPERVISION — Adult supervision is required throughout. Thorough safety rules, first-aid guidance, GHS labeling, and waste-disposal instructions are integrated throughout the manual so families can experiment confidently. An ideal gift for curious students, homeschoolers, and aspiring chemists ready to go beyond beginner kits.

The distinction matters when evaluating a drug-discovery claim. A faster way to generate or filter candidate molecules may improve part of the preclinical workflow without demonstrating that more candidates will succeed in people. Claims about one stage should not be treated as evidence of progress at another.

The more credible path is AI with chemistry and verification

Broadwith’s conclusion is cautious optimism: carefully considered AI and machine learning, used alongside human chemical understanding and experimental verification, could help address difficult problems across industries that depend on chemistry. His argument is not a blanket endorsement of AI investment. It is a case for matching tools to tractable problems and checking their outputs against the physical world.

Ooze Labs: Chemistry Station | Experiment Set
  • Play the role of chemist with this huge, colorful, functional lab station!
  • Create glowing slime, fizzing reactions, Oozing Bubbles, colorful chromatography, and more!
  • With 57 pieces, This kit has everything you need to conduct experiments like a real scientist, including beakers, test tubes, flasks, pipettes, and more.
  • Printed experiment cards clip onto the lab station for easy reference and additional experiments and scientific explanations are included in a separate 16-page, full-color manual.
  • Includes non-hazardous chemicals; does not contain borax.

For readers assessing a chemistry or materials-science AI claim, the central question is therefore not simply whether a model uses AI. Ask what problem it addresses, what evidence supports its inputs and predictions, how results are tested, and what role domain experts play. If those answers are absent, a confident promise is not yet evidence of practical value.
