To turn an AI-generated PNG or JPG into a usable SVG or cutter file, trace its pixels into editable paths, then inspect and clean those paths before uploading. Renaming a raster file with an .svg extension does not convert it. Simple, high-contrast artwork is usually a better candidate for cutting than a shaded or textured image; if you need to preserve a photographic look, use a supported Print Then Cut workflow instead.
Choose between a cut file and Print Then Cut
A vector cut file contains paths or closed shapes that tell a machine where to cut. A PNG or JPG contains pixels, so the cut lines must be created from the image. Cricut describes raster uploads as images whose cut lines need to be defined, while SVG and DXF uploads already contain vector cut paths (Cricut’s upload instructions).
Decide what the finished project needs before tracing:
- One-color silhouette: Trace the outer shape and any intentional openings. This is often the simplest option for a clean logo or icon.
- Separate cut layers: Use a design with distinct, flat color regions if you want to cut different materials or colors and assemble them.
- Full-color appearance: For photographs, gradients, painterly shading, or textures, a raster Print Then Cut image may preserve the look better than trying to create separate vector shapes. Cricut notes that patterns, gradients, textures, photographs, and embedded non-vector images can prevent its SVG/DXF workflow from separating individual shapes and colors into vector layers (Cricut’s upload instructions).
For multi-color cut projects, stacked layers overlap on a solid base; Cricut describes this approach for projects such as iron-on, paper, and vinyl. Puzzle-like sliced layers fit together without overlap and can suit projects such as Infusible Ink (Cricut’s upload instructions).

Prepare the AI image for tracing
Start with the largest, cleanest export available. A simple silhouette or clipart with sharp boundaries is easier to trace than a low-resolution image, photograph, or illustration with gradients and fine texture. Cricut cautions that small or low-resolution images may trace poorly and says its Convert to Layers feature works best with simple clipart (Cricut’s upload instructions).
- Remove background elements that should not be part of the cut.
- Reduce the number of colors if you want distinct layers rather than a mass of tiny shapes.
- Choose the intended result—silhouette, layered colors, or Print Then Cut—before selecting trace settings.
- Check that fine details and gaps will remain usable at the physical size of the finished project.
Convert a PNG or JPG to SVG with Inkscape
Inkscape’s Trace Bitmap tool turns a raster image into editable vector objects. Its available trace approaches suit different artwork: brightness cutoff can create a silhouette, edge detection can follow contours, color quantization can separate color boundaries, and centerline tracing can work with line drawings. The Inkscape Beginners’ Guide warns that “If you expect a 100% faithful representation of your picture, though, only in vector format, you will be disappointed.” (Inkscape Beginners’ Guide: Tracing an Image)

- Import the image: Open Inkscape, import the PNG or JPG, and select it.
- Open the tracing tool: Choose Path > Trace Bitmap.
- Choose a trace type and preview: Select a mode suited to the image—such as brightness cutoff for a simple silhouette or color quantization for flat color areas—and adjust settings while checking the preview.
- Apply the trace: Create the vector result, then move it aside to verify that it is a new path rather than the original bitmap.
- Clean the artwork: Remove unwanted specks and objects, repair awkward contours, and simplify or close shapes where appropriate. Color scans may create separate objects for each scan, so inspect the resulting layers.
- Save as SVG: Export or save the cleaned vector artwork as SVG for import into your cutter software.
Do not assume an automatic trace has preserved every detail or created sensible cut geometry. Zoom in to inspect small openings, gaps, and edges, then check the result at the intended project size.
Other ways to create vector artwork
| Route | Useful for | Trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| Inkscape Trace Bitmap | Tracing raster artwork and editing the resulting paths | Free vector-editor route with control over trace modes and cleanup (Inkscape Beginners’ Guide). |
| Adobe Illustrator Image Trace | People already working in Illustrator or seeking its vector-editing tools | Paid alternative; no comparative performance result is established here (Adobe Illustrator Image Trace documentation). |
| Cricut Design Space upload tools | Basic raster cleanup, a single-layer silhouette, or a Print Then Cut image | Convert to Layers can separate colors, but adding those layers to the canvas is a Cricut Access feature. It offers less path control than editing in a separate vector editor (Cricut’s upload instructions). |
Upload and check the file in Cricut Design Space
Cricut’s help documentation lists SVG and DXF as vector upload formats and JPG, BMP, PNG, GIF, and HEIC as raster formats for desktop uploads. DXF is not supported in Design Space for iOS or Android. Layered vector uploads appear grouped until ungrouped, and Cricut lists an SVG limit of 5,000 paths (Cricut’s upload instructions).

Fix common SVG upload and cut problems
- The artwork has gradients, patterns, textures, or photographs: These may not separate into usable vector layers. Keep the image as a raster Print Then Cut design if its full-color appearance matters (Cricut’s upload instructions).
- The SVG uses clipping paths: Cricut says clipping paths cannot be contained in SVG/DXF image uploads. Where appropriate, convert the intended visible result into actual filled shapes before export (Cricut’s upload instructions).
- Text changes or disappears: Convert editable text to outlines or curves so the file contains shapes rather than depending on fonts installed in the destination app (Cricut’s upload instructions).
- Part of the design is missing: Check for linked raster images, which Cricut says it cannot read, and embedded photos or other non-vector content that interferes with vector-layer workflows. Remove unsupported raster content or make sure the file contains the intended vector artwork (Cricut’s upload instructions).
- The SVG exceeds the path limit: Simplify the trace, remove specks and tiny features, or reduce the number of color scans. Cricut’s documented limit is 5,000 paths (Cricut’s upload instructions).
- The preview looks right but the cut is poor: Inspect the cut preview closely and evaluate gaps and fine features at the actual project size. A visually convincing trace can still contain excessive nodes, unwanted islands, or awkward boundaries.
