Instagram’s “AI info” label is a transparency signal, not a guarantee that Meta has conclusively proved an image was made by artificial intelligence. Meta says Instagram can use provenance data in C2PA and IPTC metadata, invisible markers and metadata embedded in images made with Meta AI, automated signals shared by other companies, and a person’s own disclosure. Those signals are incomplete: metadata can be removed, invisible markers can be stripped, and Meta says it cannot yet identify every AI-generated image.
The label’s wording and location also depend on what Instagram believes happened. Content it classifies as generated generally keeps an AI info label with additional context. Content detected as merely edited with AI may have that information moved into the post menu. Advertisements have separate placements, including About this ad, the three-dot menu and the area beside Sponsored.
What Instagram’s AI info label actually means
When Instagram shows AI info, it is telling viewers that Meta has a transparency signal suggesting artificial intelligence was involved in creating or changing the content. The signal may come from technical provenance information, a marker inserted by an image generator, an automated industry signal or the uploader’s disclosure.
That is different from saying “Meta verified every pixel.” A label does not identify the exact tool, establish who created the image, prove that the entire file was generated, or guarantee that the image is deceptive. Conversely, a missing label does not prove that a person made the image without AI. Detection depends on evidence that can be absent, altered or stripped before an upload reaches Instagram.
Meta previously used Made with AI. In July 2024 it changed that wording to AI info, a broader term intended to cover both generated and AI-modified material. In September 2024 Meta said it would distinguish those cases more clearly in the interface: content detected as only modified or edited by AI could have the information moved to the post menu, while generated content would retain an AI info label with more context.

How Instagram can identify AI involvement
Instagram does not rely on one universal detector. Meta describes several evidence channels, and the result can vary according to which signals survive the editing and publishing process.
1. C2PA and IPTC provenance information
Meta says its tools look for “AI generated” information expressed through the C2PA and IPTC standards. These standards can carry information about an asset’s origin and edits as it moves between compatible tools and services. If an image-generation or editing application writes that information into the file and the information remains intact, Instagram can use it as an industry signal.

It is information attached to the media file or its history. Exporting an image through software that does not preserve the data, taking a screenshot, or otherwise transforming the file can interrupt that chain. A file with no readable provenance therefore gives Instagram less evidence, even when AI was involved.
2. Invisible markers and Meta AI metadata
Images made with Meta AI can contain metadata and invisible markers that Meta’s systems recognize. These markers are designed to survive ordinary viewing because they are not visible as a logo or text overlay. They are still not indestructible: Meta explicitly says people can strip invisible markers. Once removed, that particular signal is unavailable to Instagram.
Invisible marking also does not mean that every AI tool uses the same method. Meta’s description is strongest for information embedded by its own systems and for signals shared across the industry. It should not be read as a claim that Instagram can identify every file produced by every generator.

3. Signals shared by other companies
Meta’s broader policy says an AI info label may be based on signals shared by industry partners. Those signals can indicate that a participating tool generated or substantially altered an image. Coverage depends on whether the tool supplies a recognizable signal, whether that signal remains in the uploaded file and whether Instagram can process it for the relevant product and region.

Meta also says a label can result when a person discloses that an upload is AI-generated. This matters because provenance systems cannot see every step in a file’s history. A creator may know that an image was generated or composited with AI even when no machine-readable marker remains. Disclosure supplies an additional transparency path, although it does not by itself describe how much of the image was generated or which tool was used.
Generated images versus AI-edited images
The most important interpretive distinction is whether AI produced the image or only changed an existing image.

The interface change explains why two posts that both involved AI may look different. Instagram is trying to keep context available while separating generation from lighter modification. Placement is therefore evidence about Meta’s classification, not a confidence score that viewers can convert into a percentage.
Where to find the label on Instagram
Organic posts
For a normal, non-paid post, the label and its explanatory context are reached from the post interface. The exact tap path can vary as Instagram tests interface changes, but the relevant information may be shown directly on the post or inside its menu. If Meta classifies the media as only AI-edited, the September 2024 policy update says the AI information may be placed in the post menu rather than displayed as a prominent label on the face of the post.

Look for the wording AI info and open the associated context instead of assuming that a small icon is the entire explanation. The available context is intended to tell you that a signal was found, not to provide a forensic report.
Advertisements
Paid content has separate transparency locations. Meta says AI info can appear in About this ad, in the ad’s three-dot menu or beside Sponsored. The same image can therefore expose AI information in a different place when it is used in an advertisement rather than an organic post.
In a 2025 update, Meta said it began automatically detecting signals from third-party AI tools for ad transparency. Availability can vary by region, so an advertiser or viewer may not see identical placement in every market. The ad disclosure location should be read together with the normal sponsored-content indicators; neither one is a guarantee that every synthetic element has been found.
Why an AI image can have no label
Meta says its identification is incomplete. Several ordinary actions can remove or hide the evidence that a label system needs:

- Metadata loss: an export, conversion or upload workflow may discard C2PA or IPTC information.
- Marker removal: invisible markers can be stripped from a file.
- Unsupported or unrecognized tools: a generator may not provide a signal that Instagram currently recognizes.
- Partial editing: an AI change may be difficult to classify when the resulting file carries no usable provenance.
- Processing differences: regional or product-specific systems, especially for advertising, may expose information in different places.
These limitations produce an important rule for viewers: absence of an AI info label is not evidence of human creation. Treat an unlabeled image as “no recognized signal was shown,” not as a certification of authenticity. If the image makes an important claim about a person or event, evaluate the surrounding account, caption and independent evidence rather than relying on the label alone.
How to interpret a label as a viewer
- Check the context. Determine whether you are viewing an organic post or an advertisement. Ads can place AI information under About this ad, in the three-dot menu or beside Sponsored.
- Read the wording. “AI info” is the current broad label. “Imagined with AI” was used by Meta for photorealistic images created with Meta AI.
- Open the explanation. The menu or context may reveal that the information relates to generation or modification. Do not infer that every visual element was produced by AI.
- Separate detection from disclosure. The label may reflect a technical industry signal, a Meta marker or the uploader’s statement. Those sources are not interchangeable proof of the image’s full history.
- Keep the limitation in view. A positive label is transparency context, not a guarantee of deception; no label is not a guarantee of authenticity.
What creators should know before uploading
Creators who use generative or editing tools should understand that the file’s technical history can affect what viewers see. A workflow that preserves C2PA or IPTC information may carry an AI signal into Instagram. A workflow that removes metadata or invisible markers may leave Instagram without that evidence. Meta’s policy also allows a label to be based on a person’s disclosure, so an uploader’s statement can matter even when a marker is absent.
Do not describe the label as a punishment or a takedown notice. Meta has said its approach is to keep manipulated media on its platforms while adding labels and context, rather than automatically removing all such content. The label communicates additional information; it does not, by itself, decide whether a post violates another policy.

How reliable is the label?
Reliability has two separate dimensions. First, a recognized signal can be useful evidence that AI was involved. Second, the system’s coverage is incomplete because signals can disappear or never be created. A label is therefore best understood as a confirmed or disclosed signal when one is available, not as a complete census of synthetic media.

Meta’s own wording is explicit: it is “not yet possible to identify all AI-generated content,” and people can strip invisible markers. That admission limits what viewers should conclude from both outcomes. A labeled image may contain human photography or later manual work; an unlabeled image may still be synthetic.
Why Meta uses transparency instead of removing every labeled image
Meta Vice President of Content Policy Monika Bickert wrote in 2024: “We agree that providing transparency and additional context is now the better way to address manipulated media and avoid the risk of unnecessarily restricting freedom of speech, so we’ll keep this content on our platforms so we can add labels and context.”
That position explains the product design. Instead of treating the presence of AI as an automatic violation, Meta presents context so people can make better judgments while the content remains available. Other rules can still apply to harassment, fraud, impersonation or harmful misinformation; the AI info label itself is not a verdict on those issues.

In a 2024 study covering more than 23,000 respondents in 13 countries, Meta reported that 82% favored warning labels for AI-generated content depicting people saying things they did not say. This is an opinion result about support for warnings, not a measurement of Instagram’s detector accuracy and not proof that a particular labeled image is false.

The distinction matters when discussing the statistic. It explains why transparency tools are being developed, but it cannot tell you whether a marker survived in one upload or whether an individual image was generated.
Where the system is heading
Meta says it is continuing standards and regulatory work with the Coalition for Content Provenance and Authenticity (C2PA) and the Partnership on AI. Those efforts aim to make provenance signals more consistent across tools and services, but interoperability does not eliminate the basic weakness of a chain that can be broken during editing or export.
Meta also announced a July 2026 commitment to sign the European Union AI Act Code of Practice on transparency of AI-generated content. That commitment is part of ongoing policy and standards work; it does not mean that every Instagram image will suddenly receive a label or that detection will become perfect on a particular date.

The practical bottom line for readers
Instagram’s AI image labels are best treated as provenance and disclosure clues. Meta can read C2PA and IPTC information, recognize markers and metadata from Meta AI, process industry signals and use a creator’s disclosure. It distinguishes generated content from content it detects as only AI-edited, and it places information differently on organic posts and advertisements.
The system remains fallible. Markers and metadata can be removed, unsupported files can pass without a recognized signal, and Meta says it cannot identify every AI-generated image. Use a visible label as meaningful context, but never treat its absence as proof of human authorship or its presence as a complete forensic account.
