AI image generators are showing up at several points in digital-art workflows: exploring ideas, producing references, and sometimes creating images used in the final work. In a 2024 survey of 380 people, respondents who identified as artists, designers, filmmakers, or art-and-design students most often reported using the tools for references and ideation. That is evidence of how this sample worked—not a measure of every artist or a verdict on whether AI improves art.
How are AI image generators changing digital art?
They give artists another way to explore visual directions quickly, but they do not remove the need to choose, judge, and refine. In a 2024 study, Yuying Tang, Ningning Zhang, Mariana Ciancia, and Zhigang Wang surveyed 380 people: 173 self-identified as artists, designers, filmmakers, or art-and-design students, and 207 people in other occupations. The researchers called these groups “professional” and “non-professional” for their analysis; those labels reflect respondents’ occupations, not a universal definition of professional status.

These are self-reported findings from the 2024 survey, not industry-wide adoption rates. They suggest that image tools may be used both before and during image-making, with different patterns across the surveyed groups. The study did not isolate character designers, measure long-term effects, or compare current image generators under controlled conditions.

Respondents also described benefits and drawbacks rather than a single overall effect. In the same survey, 54% of both groups reported inspiration as a positive effect. Professional respondents also reported time or cost savings (48%) and efficiency (48%); non-professional respondents reported realizing design ideas (54%), saving time or costs (51%), and making design easier (49%). On the concern side, 50% of professional respondents cited copyright and 46% similarity. Among non-professional respondents, 51% cited similarity, 46% reduced human control, and 44% a lack of innovation or creativity. These percentages describe this survey’s respondents; they do not establish improved quality, employment effects, or commercial success for artists generally.

Can AI help me design a character?
It can be useful as a way to explore possibilities, especially when you need several visual directions to react to. The following is a practical workflow example, not a process tested by the survey.
- Set the design brief yourself. Define the character’s role, personality, setting, and visual constraints before generating images. A brief gives you criteria for choosing rather than treating the first appealing image as the answer.
- Explore one decision at a time. Generate or sketch alternatives for silhouette, costume, palette, mood, or reference direction. If the tool supports reference images or composition controls, check how much they affect the result.
- Select and record what works. Note the specific choices you want to carry forward—such as a silhouette or color relationship—rather than assuming a generated image is a finished, consistent design.
- Refine the design with deliberate human choices. Redraw, edit, or combine elements in your illustration software. A drawing tablet can be an optional companion for sketching, annotating, or manually refining concepts; it is not required to use an image generator.
- Check the tool’s rules before sharing or selling. Review the current terms for commercial use, privacy, public visibility, remixing, and the handling of uploaded references.
For a character who must remain consistent across poses, scenes, or production assets, test whether a tool can preserve the features that matter to your project. A striking single image does not by itself show that a generator can maintain a character’s design across iterations.
How should I compare image tools for character work?
There is no universal “best” generator established by the available evidence. Compare tools against the job you need done, and test the same brief where practical.

- Control: Can you guide composition and use reference inputs? Can you revise one region without losing the parts you want to keep?
- Consistency: Can the tool preserve a character’s defining features across iterations, or will you need substantial manual correction?
- Editing workflow: Can you move easily from generated drafts into your illustration and editing tools?
- Task-specific quality: Does the output work for your actual use—such as a mood reference, a concept proposal, or a production asset?
- Cost and limits: Check the current plan price, generation allowances, and any restrictions that matter to your workload.
- Privacy and visibility: Find out whether prompts, uploads, and results are private, publicly visible, or available for remixing.
- Training and usage policies: Read what the provider says about training data, uploaded material, output licensing, and commercial use.
- Provenance: If you need to document how an asset was made, check whether credentials are added and whether they survive your export and editing process.
Can I use AI-generated images commercially?
Possibly, but the answer depends on the service’s terms, your plan, the use, and where you are. Do not assume one provider’s policy applies to another, or that a provider’s commercial-use language settles every legal question.
Midjourney’s published guidance
Midjourney’s commercial-use guidance says businesses grossing more than US$1 million a year need a Pro or Mega plan to use images commercially for the company. It also says an upscaled image made by another user belongs to that original creator and requires permission for use. These are Midjourney-specific statements; check its current commercial-use guidance and terms before relying on them.
Midjourney’s terms also say users are responsible for content they provide or generate and grant the company a broad license to inputs and generated assets. The terms describe content posted publicly as viewable and remixable by default. If privacy, reuse, or control matters to a project, read the current terms and settings before submitting work.

Adobe Firefly’s stated approach
Adobe says it trains Firefly models on licensed and public-domain content, including Adobe Stock content for which contributors are compensated, and describes safeguards intended to support commercial use. Adobe also says its enterprise customers receive intellectual-property indemnification for content generated with Firefly. These are Adobe’s descriptions of its products and protections, not an independent legal certification or a promise that every use is risk-free.
Adobe’s Firefly FAQ says Creative Cloud subscribers’ personal content is not used to train Firefly models, and that Adobe Stock contributor material is used according to contributor license agreements. Adobe also notes that generative-AI laws are evolving across jurisdictions. Check the current terms and eligibility for the exact product, account, and intended use.
Who owns an AI-generated image?
There is no single answer that applies everywhere or to every service. Ownership, permission to use an output, and copyright protection are related but distinct questions: a provider’s license may set conditions for using content on its service, while copyright law determines what original expression is protected in a jurisdiction.

In the United States, the Copyright Office’s Part 2 report, released January 29, 2025, says copyrightability depends on the nature and extent of human contribution and whether a person authored expressive elements in the output. The Office says providing prompts alone is not enough. Human-authored material perceptible in the output, a creative arrangement or selection of material, or sufficiently expressive human modification may support protection for those human-authored portions. For U.S. copyright purposes, the Copyright Office’s analysis points to the human-authored expression in the character design, not an automatic blanket right over everything a system determined. If you contribute original expressive details, make creative selections or arrangements, or substantially modify generated material, those human contributions may be protectable. The Office’s guidance does not make prompts alone sufficient, and it does not mean that every element in an AI-assisted character is protected.

How can I tell whether an image was made with AI?
Provenance information can provide clues, but no single check reliably proves how every image was made. Adobe says it automatically applies Content Credentials to certain assets made entirely from Firefly-generated pixels, such as Text to Image. Its documentation says those credentials may include the issuer, date, app or device, and AI tool used. That coverage is specific to certain workflows, not every image that has passed through Adobe software.
OpenAI says its image-verification preview checks supported provenance signals, including Content Credentials and SynthID, for supported OpenAI-generated images. OpenAI also cautions that detection is not foolproof: metadata or watermarks can be stripped, and their absence does not prove that an image was not made with OpenAI tools. Treat credentials as useful provenance when present, not as a universal AI detector or a definitive test of human creation.
