Use AI image generation when you need a new scene, subject, or composition. Use image upscaling when you already have an image and need a larger version. The important complication is that “upscaling” can mean either preserving the pixels and structure that exist or rebuilding missing detail with generative models. Choose according to your source image, target dimensions, and tolerance for invented texture or structure.
Generation and upscaling solve different problems
AI image generation starts with an instruction, reference, or idea and produces visual content that did not previously exist in the supplied file. You use it for a new illustration, a fictional scene, a product concept, a background, or a composition for which no suitable source image exists.
Image upscaling starts with an existing photo or artwork. Its first job is to increase pixel dimensions so the image can be displayed, printed, edited, or delivered at a larger size. Adobe describes upscale as an operation performed on an uploaded or generated image, which means an upscaler can also be the second stage after generation.

When generation is the right starting point
- No existing image contains the scene, person, object, or layout you need.
- Your brief calls for several new concepts rather than a larger copy of one existing image.
- You are free to let the model interpret style, lighting, surface detail, or composition.
- The image must be redesigned rather than merely made larger.
When upscaling is the right starting point
- You already have the correct subject and composition.
- The source looks right but is too small for the intended output.
- You need to retain recognizable details, colors, and structure.
- You want to enlarge a generated image without asking a new model to reinterpret the whole scene.
The source image determines the workflow
Before choosing a product, ask what information is actually present in the source. A large, clean photograph contains more reliable edge, color, and texture information than a tiny, compressed thumbnail. An upscaler can estimate what missing pixels should look like, but it cannot prove what was in pixels that were never captured.

If the source does not contain the needed subject or composition, enlarging it cannot solve the problem. Conversely, generating a replacement when the source already has the correct identity can introduce unnecessary changes.
Not every upscaler preserves detail in the same way
The word upscale describes the output size, not a single technical behavior. Adobe’s Photoshop documentation distinguishes among models with different goals: Firefly Upscaler is described for restoring low-resolution images, Topaz Gigapixel is identified as preserving existing detail, and Topaz Bloom is described as adding creative detail.
Preservation-oriented upscaling
A preservation-oriented model treats the input as authoritative. It enlarges edges, gradients, and textures while attempting to keep the subject, geometry, and natural appearance unchanged. Topaz describes its core Gigapixel models as non-generative and oriented toward preserving input structure and natural detail. This is the safer choice for a document scan, a family photograph, a product image, or artwork whose line work must remain recognizable.
Generative reconstruction
A generative model is useful when the source is extremely small, damaged, noisy, or missing important texture. It can rebuild a plausible surface instead of leaving enlarged pixels visibly soft. Adobe describes Topaz Bloom as adding creative detail, while Topaz describes its Redefine model as adding detail and rebuilding structure when original information is missing or degraded.

That improvement is a reconstruction, not proof that the software recovered the exact unseen original. A rebuilt pore, brick, hair strand, letterform, or fabric weave may be visually convincing and still be wrong. Use this mode when plausible detail is more valuable than strict historical or forensic fidelity.
A practical decision framework
- Identify the starting point. If there is no source image containing the required scene or subject, choose generation. If the source already has the right content, continue to the next question.
- Set the required dimensions. Write down the final pixel width and height, or the longest-side requirement, before selecting a model. A screen thumbnail, a poster, and a large print do not impose the same enlargement demand.
- Choose your fidelity policy. Select a preservation-oriented model when existing details must remain recognizable. Select a generative model only when invented or rebuilt detail is acceptable.
- Check the model’s limits. Compare the available scale factors and maximum dimensions with your target. Adobe documents 2× and 4× choices in Photoshop’s Generative Upscale. Topaz’s Gigapixel documentation describes enlargement up to 6× and a 32,000-pixel limit on the longest side.
- Decide whether the task is really two tasks. If you need a new composition and a larger final file, generate first and upscale second. If the composition is already correct, do not regenerate merely to obtain more pixels.
- Inspect the result at actual output size. Judge faces, text, repeated patterns, thin lines, and object boundaries at the size where the image will be used, not only in a zoomed preview.

How to use generation when you need new content
Generation is the correct first step when the visual does not exist. Treat enlargement as a later production requirement rather than trying to force an upscaler to invent an entire scene.
- Describe the required content. Specify the subject, setting, viewpoint, aspect ratio, and any elements that must appear. Keep the brief focused on what the image must contain.
- Generate several candidates. Compare composition and subject accuracy before worrying about final pixel dimensions. A beautifully detailed image with the wrong layout is not a successful source for enlargement.
- Select the candidate with the most stable structure. Check faces, hands, text, logos, straight lines, and repeated objects. Fix obvious generation errors before upscaling.
- Upscale the selected image. Use a preservation-oriented model when you want the generated composition to remain intact. Choose a generative model only if additional creative texture is part of the brief.
- Review the enlarged file. Enlargement can make small generation artifacts more visible. Inspect the final dimensions, not just the initial preview.
Adobe’s workflow explicitly supports upscaling an image that was generated earlier. Adobe also suggests pairing upscale with Generative Expand or other image manipulation when the task includes extending the canvas or changing the composition. Those operations are edits, not substitutes for selecting the right starting tool.
How to upscale an existing image
When the source already depicts the right subject, work from a copy so the original remains available for comparison.
- Record the source dimensions. Note width, height, file format, and any visible compression or blur. This establishes what the model has to work with.
- Set the destination size. Decide whether you need 2×, 4×, 6×, or another exact dimension. Confirm that the requested longest side fits the chosen product’s documented limit.
- Choose model behavior. Start with a preservation-oriented model when accuracy matters. Use a generative reconstruction mode for severely degraded material only when plausible new detail is acceptable.
- Process a test crop. If the tool allows it, test a face, a text area, a fine pattern, and a smooth gradient before processing the entire image. These regions reveal different failure modes.
- Compare against the original. Look for changed silhouettes, repeated textures, altered lettering, halos around edges, and texture that appears uniform or synthetic.
- Export a separate enlarged file. Keep the source untouched and record which scale and model produced the derivative.
In Photoshop’s Generative Upscale documentation, Adobe lists 2× and 4× choices and lets users choose among models with different enhancement behavior. In Topaz’s Gigapixel documentation, the stated scale-factor range reaches up to 6×, with a 32,000-pixel maximum on the longest side. These figures describe product capabilities, not a guarantee that every image will look good at the maximum setting.

When a combined workflow is best
Many real projects need both operations. For example, you may generate a new illustration, select the strongest composition, and then enlarge it for a poster. The order matters:

- Correct structural errors while the image is still manageable.
- Upscale once the source is approved.
- Perform any final crop or canvas extension after checking how enlargement affected edges.
Do not repeatedly regenerate and upscale in alternating cycles unless you have a specific reason. Each generative pass can reinterpret details that were already acceptable. A single controlled enlargement after the creative decision generally makes it easier to identify where a change came from.
Documented scale and dimension specifications
The following values are vendor specifications reported in the cited product documentation. They are not results from a shared benchmark, and they do not establish which product produces the best image.

A larger permitted scale does not automatically mean a better result. The source’s clarity, compression, subject matter, and the model’s reconstruction behavior can matter more than the headline multiplier.
What “preserving detail” can and cannot mean
Adobe’s Firefly Upscale Image API guide says: “The Firefly Upscale Image API increases the resolution of photos and artwork while preserving original detail, structure, and color fidelity.” Read that as a description of the API’s intended behavior and capability, not as an independent test showing that every output preserves every detail.

Upscaling necessarily estimates pixels between the captured pixels. A preservation-oriented model can keep the overall structure and natural appearance while still smoothing a texture, sharpening an edge, or changing a tiny feature. A generative model goes further by proposing detail where the source is insufficient. Neither behavior establishes what the original high-resolution scene would have looked like.
This distinction is critical for archival, legal, scientific, medical, or identity-sensitive work. A visually pleasing reconstruction may be unsuitable if the enlarged image will be treated as evidence. Preserve the original, document the processing, and label reconstructed detail when provenance matters.

- Subject identity: Faces, distinctive marks, clothing patterns, and object shapes should remain consistent with the source.
- Edges: Check halos, double contours, jagged diagonals, and outlines that have become unnaturally thick.
- Text and symbols: Enlargers can turn tiny lettering into plausible but incorrect characters. Read every important word at final size.
- Repeated patterns: Bricks, windows, tiles, foliage, and fabric can acquire duplicated or melted texture.
- Fine structure: Hair, wires, eyelashes, fur, and thin lines may disappear, multiply, or connect incorrectly.
- Color and gradients: Look for banding, halos, unexpected saturation, or a shift in skin and neutral tones.
- Output limits: Confirm the exported dimensions and that the longest side stays within the product’s documented maximum.
- Comparison view: Keep the original and enlarged file side by side; a zoomed-in view alone can make invented detail seem more authoritative than it is.
Common failure modes and fixes
The enlarged image is still soft
Increasing dimensions cannot create reliable information that is absent from a severely blurred or compressed source. Try a smaller target, a preservation-oriented model with less aggressive enhancement, or a generative model only if plausible rebuilt detail is acceptable. Do not keep increasing the scale factor expecting sharpness to improve indefinitely.
Faces or objects changed
This usually indicates that the selected model synthesized or reconstructed structure instead of strictly retaining it. Compare a preservation-oriented mode, reduce the enlargement demand, and use the original for any identity-sensitive decision.

Small lettering is a high-risk region because the source may contain too few pixels to distinguish characters. Treat the enlarged text as unreliable, recreate the type separately when possible, and do not present reconstructed letters as a faithful recovery.

Textures look artificial
Creative-detail models can add convincing but repetitive or overly sharp texture. Test a less generative model, reduce the scale, or accept the creative appearance only when exact texture is not important.
The file exceeds the required dimensions or limit
Check both dimensions rather than relying on a scale label. Topaz documents a 32,000-pixel longest-side maximum for Gigapixel. If the target exceeds a product limit, use a smaller staged output or change the delivery specification; do not imply that an unsupported size was produced by that tool.
