AI’s “God problem” is not whether a machine can believe. The more immediate question is what happens when people treat machine-generated answers as a substitute for human judgment, trusted relationships or spiritual meaning. A 2025 Vatican note addresses those risks in broad ethical and theological terms; Southern Baptist statements emphasize discernment, human flourishing and how churches should use technology in ministry. Neither position amounts to a blanket rejection of AI, and neither establishes one policy for every pastor or congregation.
What does the Vatican say AI is—and is not?
The Vatican’s Antiqua et nova, issued on 28 January 2025 by the Dicastery for the Doctrine of the Faith and the Dicastery for Culture and Education, examines the distinction between human intelligence and artificial systems. It considers AI across social settings including education, work, health, relationships, misinformation, privacy and warfare, as well as the relationship between technology and the search for God.
The note does not call for rejecting technology. It treats AI as a human-made instrument whose use should remain under human direction and moral responsibility. Its central caution is against confusing an AI system’s outputs with human intelligence, moral judgment or authentic relationship. The document says that “the Church’s moral and social teaching provides resources to help ensure that AI is used in a way that preserves human agency.”

That distinction matters in spiritual settings. The Vatican note warns against looking to AI for the fulfillment or communion that, in its account, belongs to a human relationship with God. This is a claim about the role people should assign to the technology—not evidence that AI has, or lacks, religious experience.

What have Southern Baptists said about AI?
The Convention’s 2023 resolution
The Southern Baptist Convention adopted On Artificial Intelligence and Emerging Technologies at its 2023 annual meeting. The resolution presents AI as a powerful human-created technology that could be used for human flourishing and for loving God and neighbor. It calls for Christian engagement shaped by discernment and hope, rather than either uncritical enthusiasm or fearful rejection.
The resolution asks the Convention to “acknowledge the powerful nature of AI and other emerging technologies, desiring to engage them from a place of eschatological hope rather than uncritical embrace or fearful rejection.” That is institutional language adopted by Convention messengers; it should not be mistaken for proof that every Southern Baptist church has adopted a shared AI policy.

The 2026 Brentwood ministry statement
In 2026, a group of Southern Baptist pastors, professors and entity representatives convened by Lifeway developed the Brentwood Statement on AI and Christian Ministry. Its guidance connects technology choices with the church’s calling and gospel mission, emphasizing wisdom, God-given dignity, truth, integrity, privacy, the Kingdom of God and faithful leadership.
The statement is ministry guidance developed by Southern Baptist leaders, not a denominational rule binding every congregation. Its focus is more directly practical than the Vatican note: it addresses Christian ministry, while Antiqua et nova offers broader social and ethical reflection rather than a specific sermon-preparation policy.

Debate is continuing
Southern Baptist discussion has not produced a single comprehensive policy. Baptist Press reported that the committee handling proposed resolutions for the 2026 SBC Annual Meeting considered an AI proposal but did not recommend it for adoption, and encouraged churches to address the subject locally. That is evidence of ongoing debate—not evidence that the Convention rejected the 2023 resolution or that churches have reached a uniform position.

Both approaches resist treating AI as an authority that absolves people of responsibility. The overlap is a concern for human dignity and discernment; the difference is emphasis. The Vatican document develops a theological account of human intelligence, relationships and the search for God. The Baptist materials more explicitly connect Christian engagement with ministry decisions and church practice.

Can AI replace a pastor or write a sermon?
These documents do not establish that AI-written sermons are widespread, nor do they set out one shared rule about whether a pastor may use AI to draft or edit a sermon. They do give churches a way to think about the distinction between assistance and substitution. A tool might help with a bounded task, but its output does not assume a pastor’s responsibility to interpret, judge, teach and care for people.

The practical test is not simply whether AI helped produce words. Church leaders can ask whether they remain accountable for the material, whether it is accurate and consistent with their teaching, whether confidential information has been exposed, and whether congregants are being misled about a machine-generated response as if it came from a person. These questions apply the documents’ emphasis on agency, truth, integrity and privacy; they are not a universal policy adopted by all Baptist churches or by the Vatican.

How common is AI use among pastors?
Baptist Press reported in 2026 that 18 percent of pastors intentionally avoid AI and 20 percent ignore it, in connection with research discussed alongside the Lifeway and Southern Baptist ministry statement. The report available at Baptist Press does not provide the survey instrument, sample size, field dates or population details. The figures should therefore be attributed to that report, not presented as a representative estimate for all U.S. pastors. They also do not show how often pastors use AI to write sermons.
For now, official statements and guidance are clearer than the evidence about everyday pulpit practice. Anecdotes and these limited survey details cannot establish how widespread sermon-writing with AI is.
What is the latest Vatican context?
The Vatican lists Pope Leo XIV’s Magnifica Humanitas, dated 15 May 2026, as a further development in its engagement with AI. The official page’s available description points to legal frameworks, independent oversight, informed users and political responsibility. Those themes provide current context, but the page alone is not enough to support a detailed account of the encyclical’s argument.
