AI glasses can work without a lens display by taking voice input through microphones and delivering answers through speakers built into the frame. If the glasses also have a camera and visual AI is enabled, they may pair an image of the wearer’s surroundings with a spoken question. The specific features and processing vary by product; a screen-free design does not mean the AI runs entirely on the glasses.
How do AI glasses work without a screen?
A screen is only one way for a device to show information. Screen-free AI glasses can instead take commands through microphones or frame controls, process the request using the product’s AI features, and play an answer through speakers. The wearer hears the response without looking at a display.
In a camera-equipped model, a visual question can include both speech and an image. Meta describes its Ray-Ban Meta system this way: “In the case of Ray-Ban Meta smart glasses, the captured image and the text produced by spoken words are passed to the AI model.” This is Meta’s description of its system, not evidence that every AI-glasses product works the same way or that all computation happens on the glasses. - Ask or activate: The wearer speaks or uses a control on the frame to start a feature.
- Capture input: Microphones record the request. If the model has a camera and the relevant feature is enabled, it may also capture an image.
- Interpret: The AI feature uses the available input to form a response. Which device or service performs each part of the processing depends on the product.
- Hear the answer: Speakers built into the frame play the response.
For details about a specific model, check its maker’s feature and support pages rather than assuming this entire sequence applies to every pair of AI glasses.

Can AI glasses answer questions about what you are looking at?
They can when the glasses have a camera, the relevant visual-AI feature is supported and enabled, and the wearer provides the needed input. The camera can supply an image as context for a spoken question—for example, asking about an object in view. Whether that function is available depends on the product and market.
Glasses without a camera cannot provide camera-based visual understanding. They may still support voice interaction, calls, or audio playback, but those capabilities do not give an AI a view of the wearer’s surroundings. Ray-Ban’s product pages distinguish its camera-free audio glasses from camera-equipped AI glasses: Ray-Ban Meta product features.
What differs between camera-equipped and audio-only glasses?
The absence or presence of a camera changes what information a pair can provide to an AI, but it does not by itself tell you how the glasses connect, what controls they use, or which features work where. Compare the exact model on these points:

- Camera and visual AI: Check whether there is a camera and whether the model supports AI features that use images.
- Voice and frame controls: Confirm how to start listening, invoke a feature, or control playback.
- Phone and app: Check whether a connected phone or companion app is required.
- Audio: Consider what the wearer hears and whether people nearby may also hear the speakers.
- Battery and availability: Use specifications for the exact model and generation, and check whether the desired features are offered in your market.
Do not carry a battery figure or feature list from one generation to another: specifications and availability are model-specific and can change.
Do AI glasses need a phone or internet connection?
Requirements depend on the product. Ray-Ban’s support FAQ says Ray-Ban Meta glasses need to connect to a smartphone and the Meta AI app. Treat that as a requirement for that product family, not a rule for all AI glasses. See Ray-Ban Meta’s support FAQ for its stated setup and feature details.
The cited product material does not establish that every AI task is processed locally, nor does it establish that every feature works without a phone or network connection. Check the manufacturer’s current documentation for the exact model and feature you plan to use.

What should you know about audio and camera privacy?
Audio responses avoid the need to display text in a lens, but they are not private in the same way as a display visible only to the wearer: someone nearby may hear sound from frame speakers. Do not assume screen-free means fully private, or that glasses are always listening. Check the model’s documentation for its actual listening controls and indicators.

That is a manufacturer-provided indicator, not a guarantee that everyone nearby will notice it or that an indicator alone settles privacy concerns.
