AI glasses are becoming useful for short, hands-free tasks: taking a call, replying to a message, asking about something in view, following walking directions, or reading a translated caption. Camera-and-audio models handle these tasks through voice and sound; display-equipped models can also put selected text and visual guidance in the wearer’s view. They are evolving into practical companions, not replacements for a phone or computer.
How AI glasses are changing
Early smart glasses were often used as wearable cameras or open-ear audio devices. Newer models add an AI assistant that can respond to voice prompts and, on camera-equipped glasses, answer questions about what the wearer is looking at. Display-equipped models add a small visual surface for brief interactions such as reading a message, checking a map, or viewing captions.
The shift is less about turning eyewear into a full computer and more about reducing the number of times a person needs to reach for a phone. These are most compelling when the wearer’s hands or attention are already occupied, and the answer can be brief.
What AI glasses can help with today
Hands-free calls, messages, and capture
Camera-and-audio glasses can support calls, voice interactions, and hands-free photo or video capture. Ray-Ban’s current US product page for Ray-Ban Meta Gen 2 lists a 12 MP ultra-wide camera, 3K Ultra HD video at 30 frames per second, five microphones, 32 GB storage, and Meta AI functions. These are published specifications, not independent test results. Meta’s September 2025 announcement described 3K video with ultrawide HDR and capture up to 60 frames per second; because the official descriptions differ, check the exact model and capture mode rather than treating the rates as interchangeable. Ray-Ban’s product and support page and Meta’s Gen 2 announcement provide the product details.

Questions about what is in view
A camera-equipped pair can provide visual context to an assistant: for example, asking about an object or scene while looking at it. This is a contextual, conversational task—not evidence that the glasses can reliably interpret every setting or replace a dedicated reference, inspection, or research workflow.
Navigation, captions, and translation
Display-equipped glasses can show walking directions, translated captions, or other short visual responses. Ray-Ban describes a 600-by-600-pixel full-color display in the right lens of Meta Ray-Ban Display and phone-free turn-by-turn walking directions with a visual map. The display makes some information easier to consult than audio alone, but it is intended for brief glances, not prolonged reading or screen work. Ray-Ban’s product page describes these features.

Quick schedule checks
Meta’s May 2026 comparison describes glanceable schedule, local weather, and market-trend widgets, plus a calendar app that connects with Google Calendar and Outlook. These are vendor-described capabilities; integrations and availability may vary by market and rollout. Check the current product support information before relying on a particular service. Meta’s May 2026 product comparison outlines these functions.

The two approaches serve related but different needs. Camera-and-audio glasses emphasize capture, voice control, open-ear sound, and assistant responses. A display adds glanceable text and visual guidance, while introducing a different interaction method and, in Meta’s Display example, a wristband controller.

| Approach | Useful for | Example and published details |
|---|---|---|
| Camera and audio | Hands-free capture, calls, voice prompts, and questions about a visible scene | Ray-Ban Meta Gen 2; Ray-Ban lists a 12 MP camera, 3K Ultra HD video at 30 frames per second, five microphones, and 32 GB storage. |
| Camera, audio, and display | Briefly reading messages, following visual walking directions, or viewing captions and assistant responses | Meta Ray-Ban Display; Ray-Ban lists a 600-by-600-pixel full-color display in the right lens. Meta says it ships with the Meta Neural Band, an EMG wristband that detects muscle signals such as subtle finger movements. |
Neither design is a general-purpose work screen. The most grounded productivity use cases are short, contextual actions rather than extended writing, spreadsheet work, or managing an entire workday from the glasses.

AI glasses are part of a connected system, not just a frame. Ray-Ban says Ray-Ban Meta requires a compatible smartphone and operating system, the Meta AI app, wireless internet, and a Meta account. Functions can also depend on supported messaging, navigation, music, or calendar services, as well as country and software rollout. Verify current model and regional support before choosing based on a specific feature.

- Interaction: Decide whether voice and audio are enough, or whether you want a visual display and are comfortable with wristband input.
- Task fit: Focus on your actual short tasks—calls, messages, hands-free capture, visual questions, navigation, captions, translation, or quick schedule checks.
- Wearability: Consider frame fit, prescription options, lens type, comfort, and whether an added wristband suits your routine.
- Battery and capture: Compare the manufacturer’s stated use conditions, case capacity, camera capabilities, and storage for the exact model.
- Privacy and workplace rules: Consider visible cameras, recording indicators, consent expectations, and your organisation’s rules on wearables. Recording laws vary by location; these product sources do not establish jurisdiction-specific legal requirements.
How to think about privacy and AI processing
Some basic actions can run on the glasses, while more advanced AI features rely on cloud computing. In a September 2026 engineering article, Meta said calls and text replies can run on-device, whereas larger, more capable AI models require cloud processing. Meta describes its Private Processing architecture as running models in confidential virtual machines so that, according to the company, Meta cannot access data processed there. That is Meta’s account of its design and privacy aim, not an independent audit of every data flow, retention practice, setting, or product configuration. Meta Engineering’s explanation of Private Processing gives its description.
Where they remain limited
- They are not a phone or computer replacement. The documented features support brief interactions, not extended writing, spreadsheets, or a full desktop productivity suite.
- Hands-free does not automatically mean distraction-free. Audio prompts, camera use, and in-lens content still compete for attention and may be inappropriate in some settings.
- Features are not universal. Model, software rollout, supported country, language, connected services, and phone compatibility can affect what works.
- Battery claims are estimates. Manufacturers state different figures for different models and use conditions; real use depends on the functions used.
- Productivity gains have not been quantified here. The cited official materials describe features, not an independent study measuring how much time or work users save.
Choosing based on the work you want to do
Choose camera-and-audio glasses if your priority is hands-free capture, calls, voice prompts, or asking about something you see. Choose a display-equipped model if you expect to consult short text, directions, or captions without looking down at a phone—and accept the added display and controller as part of the system. If your work involves long documents, detailed editing, or sustained visual concentration, a phone or computer remains the more appropriate tool.
