How do I review AI-generated assets in-game before shipping them? Treat each output as a candidate: import it into the game or a representative build, inspect it in the conditions players will encounter, check its rights and provenance, and record a human decision to accept, revise, replace, or reject it. A generator preview alone cannot show whether an asset works with your camera, lighting, animation, UI, performance limits, or the rest of the game.
How do I review AI-generated assets in-game before shipping them?
Use a repeatable review that separates three questions: Does the asset work in context? Can you use it under the relevant rights and tool terms? Is its final use described accurately wherever a platform requires disclosure? The checks below are practical production guidance, not a universal technical standard or a measured guarantee of quality.
1. Define the asset’s intended use
Before judging the output, note what it is, where it appears, whether players see or interact with it, its expected size and camera distance, and whether it moves or responds to gameplay. Set acceptance criteria for that use. A detailed texture may be unsuitable if it becomes unreadable at the normal gameplay distance; a polished still image may fail once animated.
2. Import it into a representative build
Use the intended engine settings and, where feasible, the target platform. Inspect the asset with production lighting, shaders, post-processing, camera framing, and nearby content—not only in an asset browser or isolated preview. Check it at normal gameplay distance and close up, since defects that are invisible in one view may dominate another.

3. Check visual and technical fit
Use checks appropriate to the asset and its role. This is a practical checklist, not a source-defined benchmark:
- Readability: Does the silhouette remain clear at the intended scale and distance?
- Surface quality: Look for texture seams, malformed details, and artifacts under the game’s actual materials and lighting.
- Art direction: Does it belong beside the surrounding assets in style, color, and level of detail?
- Placement and scale: Does it fit the scene without unexpected clipping or proportion problems?
- Motion and interaction: If it animates, deform it and test it in motion; check relevant gameplay responses.
- UI use: If it appears in the interface, verify legibility at the sizes and display conditions players will use.
- Runtime cost: Check performance and memory impact against the project’s constraints.
Test it in more than one representative scene when its use demands it. An asset that works under one lighting setup or camera angle may not hold up elsewhere.
4. Check provenance and rights
Review the current terms and license for the generator or service used, including restrictions on output, attribution conditions, and any disclosure obligations. Do not assume that being able to generate or download an asset automatically clears it for every use. Keep a traceability note for production: the tool or service and version, if available; generation or acquisition date; source material or prompt where appropriate; edits; reviewer; and final decision. This is a useful recordkeeping practice, not a format the cited guidance establishes as legally required.

5. Record a human decision
A reviewer should explicitly accept, revise, replace, or reject the candidate against the use criteria. Mark the approved version so it is distinguishable from drafts, and keep rejected or superseded candidates out of shipping builds. This is a recommended production control rather than a platform mandate.
6. Match disclosure to the distribution platform
Platform requirements differ. Steamworks’ Content Survey asks about generative AI in development or in the product; its guidance says prerelease review evaluates generated output under the same content requirements as other content. Check the current Steamworks Content Survey when completing it, because forms and requirements can change.
Kongregate’s developer guidance requests disclosure of player-facing AI use in the game description and says developers are responsible for their game’s content and rights compliance. Do not assume one store’s instructions apply to another; consult each platform’s live guidance and describe the shipped or player-facing use accurately.

Can I use AI-generated assets in my game?
That depends on the tool’s current terms, the asset’s provenance, applicable law, and the rules of the platform where you distribute the game. Review those factors for the specific asset rather than treating AI generation as blanket permission. Keep responsibility for the final content with the development team, and do not ship an asset whose rights or permitted use are unclear.
In the United States, the Copyright Office’s January 29, 2025 announcement of Part 2 of its AI report says outputs may be protected only where a human author determined sufficient expressive elements. Its AI resource page also provides registration guidance for works containing AI-generated material. This is U.S.-specific guidance; it should not be treated as a statement of copyright law in other jurisdictions.

Steam’s Content Survey includes questions about generative AI used in development or in the product. Use the current form to answer for your game accurately, and distinguish development use from content players encounter where the form calls for it. Steam’s guidance says generated output is reviewed under the same content requirements as other content; AI generation does not exempt an asset from those requirements.

Why should the final check happen in the game?
A standalone preview cannot reproduce all the conditions that determine whether an asset is fit to ship: camera distance, surrounding art, material response, motion, interface scale, and runtime constraints. Epic Developer Community once described more than 41,000 AI-generated assets uploaded to Fab in a short timeframe, which it said overwhelmed systems for managing and surfacing content. The announcement also described planned creator labeling and a reporting path for suspected mislabeling. That is one platform’s account of a marketplace-management incident—not a measure of typical upload volume, asset quality, or the review burden in a game project. How to compare candidates when several might work
When choosing between outputs or deciding whether to revise one, compare them against the job they need to do rather than judging only which looks most impressive in a preview.

There is no quantitative benchmark here that predicts which candidate will ship successfully. Use the criteria to document a project-specific decision, and reject an output if it fails a requirement that revision cannot reasonably fix.
