AI makes sense for business growth when it can improve a specific, repeatable workflow and the business can provide suitable data, manage the risks, and measure the result. It is not a growth strategy by itself: evidence that businesses use AI does not prove that AI raises revenue or productivity.
When is AI a sensible fit for a business?
Start with a workflow, not a tool. A promising task is repetitive or information-heavy, has a clear definition of success, and can be checked by a person when errors matter. Before adopting AI, answer five questions:
- Task fit: Is the task frequent and bounded enough to describe what a useful result looks like?
- Data and access: Are the inputs accurate, permitted for this use, and available to the system?
- Risk and review: What could go wrong, who would be affected, and who checks the output?
- Implementation: What workflow changes, staff training, cloud services, or integration work will be needed?
- Measurement: What baseline and outcome will show whether the change helped—for example, handling time, resolution rate, timely follow-up on qualified leads, or time spent searching?
These are decision criteria, not guaranteed benefits. A 2025 Statistics Canada survey found that among Canadian businesses reporting AI use, 40.1% reported developing new workflows and 38.9% reported training current staff to use AI. Those figures make implementation effort part of the decision; they do not establish that every business needs AI. Statistics Canada, October 27, 2025.
Which business workflows are plausible candidates?
The five cases below are practical use categories, not a ranking. In each, begin with a bounded task and keep a human responsible for consequential decisions.

1. Customer service and engagement
AI may help staff find answers in approved materials, sort routine requests, or draft replies for review. A virtual agent can also handle a limited set of common questions if there is a reliable way to hand off unfamiliar or sensitive cases to a person. Canada’s second-quarter 2025 business survey lists virtual agents and chatbots among applications reported by businesses using AI. OpenAI’s 2025 enterprise report also describes customer-support and customer-facing applications. These sources show use, not proof of improved satisfaction, lower costs, or higher sales.
Set boundaries before deployment: which sources are approved, which requests require escalation, and what response-quality or resolution measure will be monitored.
2. Marketing content and personalization
AI can assist with first drafts, marketing automation, and finding patterns in customer feedback. Statistics Canada reports marketing automation and text analytics among AI applications; a U.S. Census Bureau working paper identifies Sales and Marketing as a common function among firms using AI. These findings document activity, not a causal increase in conversion or growth.

3. Sales research and workflow support
For sales teams, a bounded use might be summarizing account information, searching internal materials, or assisting with repeated steps in a sales process. Sales and Marketing appears among common AI-using functions in the Census Bureau working paper, and OpenAI describes repeatable enterprise workflows. Neither source establishes that AI improves close rates.
Define what the system may use and what the salesperson must verify, especially for customer-specific facts. A useful pilot could measure whether staff spend less time searching or follow up with qualified leads more consistently; those are suggested measures, not reported outcomes from the cited sources.

4. Internal productivity and operations
Document-heavy work—such as drafting, summarizing, retrieval, and recurring status updates—can be a candidate when the source material is accessible and outputs can be checked. In 2024, 61% of the 282 generative AI use cases reported by 11 selected U.S. federal agencies were in mission-enabling functions, according to the Government Accountability Office (GAO). The agency report describes communications, information access, report summarization, and program status tracking. This is a count of selected government use cases, not an estimate of private-sector productivity or business growth.
For a business pilot, select one workflow and measure a baseline such as time spent preparing a routine update. Keep the underlying records authoritative and make clear who approves the final document.
5. Analytics and decision support
AI-supported text or data analytics may help a business identify patterns in reviews, emails, survey responses, or operational records. Statistics Canada lists text analytics and data analytics among applications reported by AI-using businesses. The usefulness of this work depends on data quality and a specific decision the analysis is meant to inform; the survey does not measure resulting business growth.

Adoption surveys show that some businesses are using AI, but the estimates have different definitions, geographies, and reference periods. They should not be read as a single comparable trend.

| Measure | Reported result | How to interpret it |
|---|---|---|
| U.S. firms using AI in a business function | 18% of firms during the November 2025–January 2026 supplement reference period; 32% when weighted by employment | Among adopting firms, 57% used AI in three or fewer business functions. Sales and Marketing (52%), Strategy and Business Development (45%), and IT (41%) were the most common functions reported. The function percentages use adopting firms as their denominator. U.S. Census Bureau, 2026. |
| Canadian businesses using AI in producing goods or delivering services | 12.2% over the prior 12 months | This is a different geography, period, and definition from the U.S. Census measure, so the percentages are not directly comparable. Statistics Canada, 2025. |
| Applications among Canadian businesses reporting AI use | Text analytics: 35.7%; data analytics: 26.4%; virtual agents or chatbots: 24.8% | The denominator is Canadian businesses reporting AI use, not all Canadian businesses. Statistics Canada, 2025. |
| Reported implementation activities among Canadian businesses using AI | Developing new workflows: 40.1%; training current staff: 38.9%; purchasing cloud services or storage: 25.7%; vendor or consulting services for installation or integration: 18.2% | These are reported activities among AI-using businesses, not requirements to use a particular service or provider. Statistics Canada, 2025. |
The Census Bureau revised its core wording in November 2025, changing its measure from AI use in producing goods or services to use “in any business function,” and expanded measurement to 15 functions. For that reason, attach the survey period, geography, and definition to adoption rates rather than presenting them without context. U.S. Census Bureau, Business Trends and Outlook Survey.
Adoption and performance are also different questions. A U.S. Census Bureau working paper reports a positive correlation between commercial performance and breadth of AI integration; correlation alone does not show that AI caused better performance. A July 2026 Bureau of Economic Analysis paper says the connection between stated adoption motivations and measured outcomes is not yet clear, while reporting some evidence of changes in production processes and an association between AI use cases and increased R&D intensity. Neither finding justifies a promise of growth.
How to evaluate a proposed AI pilot
- Write down the workflow. Specify the task, who performs it now, how often it occurs, and what a correct result looks like.
- Choose one measurable outcome. Record a baseline before changing the process. Select a measure relevant to the task, such as handling time, resolution rate, search time, or qualified-lead follow-up.
- Check the inputs and permissions. Confirm that source information is accurate, accessible, and allowed for the intended use. Decide what information should not be entered or exposed.
- Set review and escalation rules. Identify errors that could harm a customer, employee, or the business. Assign a person to verify outputs and define when the system must defer to a human.
- Account for implementation work. Estimate workflow redesign, staff training, cloud services, and integration needs before comparing the expected benefit with the effort.
- Run a limited evaluation. Compare the chosen measure with the baseline and review errors as well as speed. Expand only if the results are useful, the risks remain manageable, and staff can sustain the process.
What evidence cannot establish
Business surveys and agency reports can reveal reported adoption and use cases; they do not, by themselves, demonstrate that AI causes revenue growth, customer satisfaction, or productivity gains. GAO’s evidence covers selected federal agencies, not private businesses. Its report identifies challenges involving policy compliance, technical resources and budget, and keeping appropriate-use policies current. These are relevant governance considerations, not findings from a business survey.
GAO’s general conclusion is that “Generative AI offers potential benefits.” That is a statement of potential, not a business-growth guarantee. U.S. Government Accountability Office, Artificial Intelligence: Generative AI Use and Management at Federal Agencies, July 2025.
