AI-generated food photos can affect more than whether a burger looks appetizing: they can shape what customers think they are ordering, how much they trust a restaurant, and whether they intend to buy. But the evidence does not show that every synthetic image misleads diners—or that everyone reacts the same way.
The assignment’s title refers to a product marketing expert, but no interviewee identity or interview remarks are available to substantiate what that person said. The findings below therefore distinguish published research and platform guidance from interview claims.
Why a food photo can matter beyond appearance
A menu image is a representation of a dish, not just decoration. Customers may use it to form expectations about ingredients, portion, plating and likely taste. If an image depicts something the restaurant does not actually serve, the mismatch can undermine confidence even if the image is visually appealing.

That concern is distinct from whether an image was made with AI. A synthetic image could accurately represent a real recipe, while a conventional photograph could still be outdated or show a version unlike the dish customers receive. The useful question is whether the image makes a faithful promise—and what customers infer when they learn how it was made.

What consumer studies say about AI food images
Recognition and appeal are not the same thing
A 2024 paper by Califano and Spence reports that participants in two online experiments could identify AI-generated food images relatively easily, particularly images of ultra-processed foods. Yet when image origin was not disclosed, generated images were often preferred. Labeling an image as genuine increased its appeal, while saying it was AI-generated mitigated that effect. These results describe those experiments, not a universal preference among restaurant customers. Read the 2024 study.
Disclosure may affect purchase intention
A 2026 paper by Chen and colleagues, “Tainted by technology?,” reports three scenario-based experiments. Its abstract says an AI-generated label reduced participants’ intention to purchase the pictured cuisine, with lower perceived authenticity and effort influencing perceived taste. The negative effect was stronger when the scenario involved a high price premium. The abstract does not report sample sizes or effect magnitudes, so it does not establish how large the effect would be in a particular restaurant or market. Read the 2026 study abstract.

Together, the studies suggest that image origin can matter to viewers, but not in one simple way: an undisclosed synthetic image may be appealing, while disclosure may change how it is judged. Neither study proves that all diners can detect AI imagery, that disclosure always reduces sales, or that every AI-generated menu image is deceptive.
Why generated dishes can look plausible but still be wrong
Some image-generation errors are not merely odd styling. An image can capture the broad idea of a dish without correctly assembling its ingredients or objects. In a September 2026 IBM article, senior staff writer Dave Bergmann describes the issue this way: “It’s not generating pasta and shrimp and butter and parmesan and garlic—it’s generating the monolithic idea of shrimp scampi.” That is an explanation of a possible limitation, not proof that every image model or every output has the same flaw. For a restaurant, the practical test is concrete: compare the image with the dish currently served. Check ingredients, quantity, sides, garnish, serving vessel and plating. A picture that looks like the category of food but invents a topping, omits an ingredient or suggests a larger portion can create a misleading expectation regardless of how attractive it is.
What a restaurant should check before using an image
- Verify the dish. Confirm that ingredients, portion, sides and presentation match what customers can order now.
- Review the finished image. Look closely for fused or missing ingredients, impossible textures, duplicated objects and details that could imply something the restaurant does not provide.
- Consider disclosure and context. The studies indicate that disclosure can affect appeal or purchase intention, but they do not prescribe a universal label or establish a legal rule. Follow applicable requirements and avoid presenting an illustrative image as a literal photograph if that would mislead customers.
- Check the specific platform’s current policy. Do not assume one delivery or restaurant platform’s image rules apply to another.
- Get restaurant approval before upload. The person accountable for the menu should sign off on whether the image accurately represents the item.
Platform rules are separate from customer reactions
Zomato’s official photo guidelines say clear, focused, appetizing food shots may be featured in restaurant galleries and list possible moderation consequences, including reduced visibility or deletion for violations such as blurry or unclear photos, plagiarized photos, promotional-content photos and unpleasant images. The reviewed guidelines do not establish a blanket ban on AI-generated images, and they apply to Zomato rather than every platform. Check the current rules where the restaurant plans to publish. MenuLift describes a service that can generate images from a restaurant’s recipe, ingredients, plating direction and brand notes, or enhance existing photos. The company says it sends image batches to restaurants for review and that the images must represent the actual dish. Those are the provider’s own statements about its process, not independent verification of output quality or a guarantee that a platform will accept an image. See MenuLift’s description of its workflow.

There is no comparable cost evidence here to support a numerical savings claim for AI versus photography. Restaurants weighing options should compare actual quotes and workflow requirements rather than assume synthetic imagery is cheaper or faster in every case.
What AI-image detection research can—and cannot—tell us
A 2024 preprint by Gambetti and Han describes 20,144 restaurant review-image pairs: 10,143 authentic pairs and 10,001 generated pairs. The authentic reviews were scraped from Yelp in New York City; the generated examples used GPT-4-Turbo and DALL-E 2. The authors report 99.80% multimodal accuracy for a FLAVA model on their test set. That figure applies to that dataset and test setup; it is not a general guarantee that a tool can reliably detect AI food images across platforms, cuisines or newer image models. Read the AiGen-FoodReview paper.
The dataset is useful for studying synthetic review imagery, but it is not a representative survey of consumers or restaurants. A detector’s score on a defined dataset also does not answer whether a particular menu image is truthful, appetizing or acceptable to a platform.
