A broad-market ETF usually gives you more genuine diversification. It spreads ownership across far more companies, industries and business models. An AI ETF is a thematic allocation: it may include semiconductor makers, cloud-infrastructure providers, software companies and data businesses, but many of those holdings can still rise and fall with the same artificial-intelligence capital-spending cycle and valuation assumptions.

The useful comparison is therefore not simply the number of tickers. Examine how much the largest positions represent, which sectors and countries are included, whether holdings share the same economic driver, how the index is weighted and rebalanced, and what you pay to own it. A broad-market fund is commonly a core equity holding; an AI fund is more often a satellite position for an investor who accepts concentration risk.

What “diversification” means in this comparison

Diversification is the reduction of portfolio-specific risk by owning assets whose returns are not perfectly tied to one company, sector or economic scenario. A fund can hold hundreds of securities and still be exposed to one dominant theme if most companies depend on the same customers, financing conditions or technology cycle.

There are several layers to check:

  • Company breadth: how many distinct issuers are held and how much of the portfolio sits in the largest ten.
  • Industry breadth: whether exposure spans technology, consumer businesses, industrials, financials, health care and other sectors, or clusters in one area.
  • Geographic breadth: whether holdings are concentrated in one country or include companies from multiple markets.
  • Economic-driver breadth: whether businesses earn money in meaningfully different ways, or all rely on the same AI infrastructure spending, advertising demand or enterprise budgets.
  • Methodology breadth: the index rules that determine eligibility, weighting, rebalancing and diversification limits.

Two funds with the same number of holdings can therefore have very different risk profiles. A broad index may own many companies but give its largest firms substantial weights. A thematic index may own fewer companies and also have a high overlap in suppliers, customers and valuation factors. Diversification is a portfolio characteristic, not a ticker-count contest.

Broad-market ETF and AI ETF at a glance

Question Broad-market example AI-themed example Why it matters
Mandate Owns a wide slice of the investable stock market. Targets companies selected for artificial-intelligence and related data exposure. The broad mandate seeks market representation; the thematic mandate seeks a particular trend.
Holdings breadth Vanguard’s VTI fact sheet lists 3,544 stocks, data as of June 30, 2025. Holdings vary by index and rebalance; a ticker count alone does not show independent risk sources. More issuers generally widen company exposure, but overlap and common drivers still matter.
Sector profile VTI’s technology allocation was 35.9% as of June 30, 2025, with additional consumer-discretionary, industrial, financial, health-care and other sectors. AI funds can cluster in technology and adjacent industries such as semiconductors, cloud infrastructure and software. Sector spread can reduce the impact of a single industry downturn.
Illustrative cost VTI’s fact sheet listed a 0.03% expense ratio in 2025. The retrieved AIQ materials establish its objective but do not provide a directly comparable current expense ratio. Fees vary by fund; compare each fund’s current expense ratio and trading costs rather than assuming a category-wide result.
Typical portfolio role Often used as a core equity allocation. Often used as a satellite allocation for investors comfortable with concentration risk. Your role assignment determines how much thematic volatility your overall plan can absorb.

The figures in the table are snapshots, not permanent specifications. Fund holdings, sector weights, fees and classifications can change, so check the latest fact sheet and prospectus before trading.

Why a broad-market ETF usually diversifies more

Many issuers and revenue sources

A total-market approach attempts to represent companies across the market-cap spectrum rather than selecting only firms associated with one innovation. That creates exposure to different revenue sources: household spending, business investment, health services, financial intermediation, manufacturing, energy and communications, as well as technology. Weakness in one activity may be partly offset by strength elsewhere.

This does not make a broad fund immune to losses. A market-wide recession, rising interest rates or a broad equity valuation decline can affect nearly every holding. The benefit is that the fund is less dependent on the success of one technology, customer group or investment narrative.

Broad does not mean evenly weighted

Many broad indexes use market-capitalization weighting. SEC guidance on index funds explains that companies with larger market values receive larger index weights. Consequently, a fund can own thousands of stocks while a relatively small group of very large companies drives a substantial share of returns.

That is concentration of weight, not necessarily the same as concentration of theme. The largest firms may operate in different businesses and earn revenue from different customers, even when their share prices respond to common macroeconomic conditions. To evaluate the distinction, review the fund’s top-ten percentage, sector allocation and individual position limits.

How an AI ETF creates exposure—and where concentration appears

Thematic selection rules

AI ETFs do not all define “artificial intelligence” the same way. Some select companies developing machine-learning software; others include chip designers, equipment suppliers, cloud platforms, data-center operators, cybersecurity firms or businesses using AI in their products. Read the index methodology for the inclusion test, minimum revenue or exposure thresholds, eligible countries and rebalancing calendar.

Global X states that AIQ seeks to track the Indxx Artificial Intelligence & Big Data Index before fees and expenses. That objective tells you the fund is designed to follow a focused index, not to replicate the entire stock market. The prospectus and methodology are the places to verify how the index decides which businesses qualify.

Non-diversification language is a material warning

The Xtrackers AI and Big Data ETF prospectus identifies non-diversification risk and says the fund invests at least 80% of assets in securities that are components of its index. This kind of language means the fund can be materially affected by a small set of industries, companies or countries represented in the index. It is not a prediction that losses will occur; it is a description of the exposure the mandate permits.

Shared AI drivers can link otherwise different companies

A chip manufacturer, cloud provider and enterprise-software vendor are separate issuers, but their results may depend on the same customers expanding AI data-center budgets. If those customers delay projects, if financing becomes more expensive or if a new architecture reduces demand for a particular component, several holdings can decline together. Count each company, then ask whether its cash flows would behave differently in the same scenario.

Holdings overlap is more informative than the ticker count

When comparing an AI ETF with a broad-market ETF you already own, identify the positions that appear in both. Overlap can be measured by the percentage of the AI fund invested in companies you already hold, by the number of shared names, and by the combined portfolio weight of those names after considering your own account allocations.

High overlap is not automatically bad. It may be intentional if you want to increase exposure to a conviction. It does mean the AI fund adds less new diversification than its standalone holdings list suggests. A fund with 40 names could add more distinct economic exposure than one with 100 names if the latter is concentrated in a single supply chain.

Look beyond company names. Compare revenue sources, customer types, geographic sales, debt sensitivity and valuation factors. Two funds may hold different issuers that nevertheless respond to the same interest-rate or capital-expenditure shock.

Index methodology determines concentration

Weighting methods

Market-cap weighting lets rising companies become larger parts of the index. Equal weighting gives each constituent a similar starting weight and periodically trims winners, while capped or modified weighting limits any one issuer or sector. Fundamental or revenue-based methods use different measures to set weights. None is universally superior; each creates a different pattern of concentration, turnover and tracking risk.

Eligibility and rebalancing

Read the rules for adding and removing securities. A strict AI-purity test may produce a narrow portfolio of specialist firms. A broader test may include large diversified companies whose AI exposure is one business line among many. Check how often the index rebalances, whether it buffers borderline names to reduce turnover, and whether it can hold cash or related instruments during implementation.

Diversification limits

Prospectuses may specify limits on individual positions, industries or countries, along with the percentage that must remain in index components. These limits can prevent one holding from dominating, but they do not eliminate correlated risk. A dozen companies can still move together if they share the same economic driver.

Fees, spreads and the cost of implementation

Expense ratio is only one cost. The SEC advises investors to understand an ETF’s objectives, holdings, fees, risks, net asset value and any premium or discount to NAV. Also consider the bid-ask spread, brokerage commission where applicable, and the effect of trading at a time when the underlying markets are closed.

Do not assume every AI ETF is more expensive than every broad-market ETF. Fees differ within both categories, and the AIQ material available here does not establish a directly comparable current expense ratio. Compare the latest standardized expense ratio for each candidate, then assess whether the thematic exposure is worth its total implementation cost.

Lower costs generally improve results when two funds deliver identical holdings performance, because less return is deducted each year. They do not make a concentrated fund diversified, and a cheaper fund can still be unsuitable if its methodology does not match your objective.

Should an AI ETF be your core holding?

For most investors seeking a single long-term equity foundation, a broad-market ETF is easier to justify as the core because it spreads exposure across more sectors and business models. An AI ETF can be considered a satellite allocation when you deliberately want to overweight the theme and can tolerate larger drawdowns, periods of underperformance and uncertainty about which companies will capture the eventual profits.

The decision depends on your complete portfolio, not the ETF in isolation. Include workplace retirement accounts, individual stocks, international funds, bonds and cash when calculating technology or AI exposure. A modest AI position inside a diversified portfolio can create a very different risk than the same percentage in an account already dominated by technology shares.

Questions to answer before making a thematic allocation

  • What percentage of the entire portfolio may be exposed to AI-related companies?
  • What loss or underperformance would cause you to sell at the wrong time?
  • Are you adding genuinely different businesses, or increasing positions you already own?
  • How long can the allocation remain invested if the theme falls out of favor?
  • What rule will you use to rebalance back to your target weight?

A practical comparison process

  1. Define the job of each fund. Write whether the candidate is intended to provide broad market exposure, a sector tilt, a geographic allocation or a narrowly defined theme.
  2. Download the current fact sheet and prospectus. Record the date of the holdings, the stated objective, expense ratio, index name, country eligibility and risk disclosures.
  3. List the largest positions. Note the percentage in the top ten and any single-position cap. A high top-ten share deserves a different risk budget from a broadly distributed fund.
  4. Map sectors and countries. Identify whether the portfolio spans multiple industries and regions or is mostly technology and adjacent infrastructure.
  5. Check overlap with your existing holdings. Add the weights of shared companies and investigate companies that serve the same customers even when their names differ.
  6. Read the weighting and rebalance rules. Determine whether the index is market-cap weighted, equal weighted, capped or based on another formula, and how often it changes.
  7. Estimate all-in trading cost. Compare expense ratio, spread and the size and frequency of your planned trades. Use limit orders when appropriate for the market conditions and your broker’s rules.
  8. Set a portfolio limit and review date. Decide in advance how large the thematic sleeve may become and what event—such as a scheduled annual review—will trigger rebalancing.

The SEC Investor Bulletin puts the central suitability test plainly: “Understand how the ETF achieves its stated investment objectives and whether those objectives are consistent with your financial goals.” That test is more important than a fund’s marketing label.

When each approach may fit

An investor seeking one equity foundation

If you want one fund to anchor long-term stock exposure and do not have a specific thematic view, a broad-market ETF is generally the more diversified starting point. Its mandate is designed to capture a wide market rather than depend on one technology outcome. You still need to check its country coverage, weighting concentration and whether you want additional bonds or international exposure.

An investor intentionally overweighting AI

If you already have a diversified core and want a measured AI tilt, a thematic ETF can provide a packaged basket instead of selecting individual companies. The trade-off is concentration and potentially greater volatility. Define the maximum allocation before buying; do not let a rising theme determine your risk limit after the fact.

An investor replacing a concentrated stock position

An AI ETF may reduce single-company risk compared with owning one AI-related stock, but it can still leave you exposed to a common industry cycle. Compare the ETF’s top holdings and sector weights with the stock you are replacing. The result may be broader issuer exposure without being broad-market exposure.

Common mistakes and how to avoid them

Mistaking many tickers for independent risks

Count companies, then test whether they rely on the same suppliers, customers and spending cycle. Correlation can rise sharply during market stress, when diversification is most valuable.

Assuming a broad fund has no concentration

Market-cap weighting can make the largest companies a substantial influence. Review the top-ten share and technology allocation instead of relying on the word “total” or “broad.”

Comparing stale facts

Holdings, sector weights, expense ratios and index classifications change. Match the dates on the documents and use the latest prospectus and fact sheet available before placing an order.

Looking only at the expense ratio

A low fee does not offset a poor fit, a wide bid-ask spread or unintended overlap with your existing portfolio. Evaluate objective, risk, liquidity and total trading cost together.

Using a thematic fund as a permanent core by default

A theme can experience long periods in which expectations outrun earnings. If you cannot explain what would make you reduce the position, the allocation may be larger than your plan can tolerate.

How to monitor the choice after purchase

Set a recurring review—often annually or on the index’s published rebalance schedule—to verify that the fund still performs the role you assigned. Record changes in top-ten concentration, sector and country exposure, expense ratio, index methodology and overlap with the rest of your portfolio.

Also check whether the fund has changed its name, index provider or investment objective. A methodology change can alter diversification even when the ticker remains the same. Rebalance according to your written target rather than chasing whichever fund recently performed best.

Bottom line: breadth versus concentration

A broad-market ETF generally provides more genuine diversification because it owns companies across many sectors and economic activities. An AI ETF can complement that core when you deliberately want concentrated exposure to companies linked to artificial intelligence and big data, but its holdings may share the same capital-spending and valuation risks. Compare top weights, sectors, geography, overlap, index rules and total costs before deciding; the right choice is the one whose objective and risk level match your complete financial plan.
