AI-driven MDR automates more of the repetitive work behind detection and response—such as enriching alerts, prioritizing them, and carrying out some bounded actions—but it does not automatically replace human analysts or transfer accountability. Traditional MDR already uses automation, rules, and playbooks. For a security team, the meaningful difference is how much work the provider automates, what controls govern that automation, and who is authorized to act when an incident is underway.
What MDR includes—and what AI changes
Managed detection and response (MDR) is a service, not simply a security product that raises alerts. The service provider monitors security signals, investigates potential incidents, and either takes agreed response actions or advises the customer’s team. Microsoft describes its analysts as managing the incident queue, triaging and investigating incidents, then acting or guiding the customer through response. By contrast, endpoint detection and response (EDR) and extended detection and response (XDR) products supply detection data and capabilities; an organization still needs people or a service to monitor and act on that information. Microsoft’s overview of Defender Experts MDR explains the service boundary.
AI can change the speed and scale of parts of that service. A system may summarize an alert, gather context from multiple sources, correlate related signals, or recommend a next step. Depending on the provider and the customer’s settings, automation may also carry out a defined response action. That does not make every provider using AI equivalent, nor does it mean a security team can stop reviewing risk, setting policy, or coordinating incident response.

| Detection and correlation | Rules, detection engineering, and automated tools identify suspicious activity; analysts may tune detections and connect related signals. | AI may support detection engineering, signal correlation, or prioritization. Providers may also use deterministic rules and playbooks. | Which data sources are covered, which techniques are used, and whether a claim refers to a model, a rule, or both. |
| Enrichment and triage | Automation can collect known context, while analysts assess whether an alert warrants investigation. | AI may gather and summarize context or make an initial classification, leaving analysts to supervise, validate, or handle exceptions. | What “accuracy” means, how uncertain results are escalated, and whether decisions can be audited. |
| Investigation and hunting | Analysts investigate incidents and may proactively hunt for threats using available telemetry. | AI may assist with searching, summarizing evidence, or recommending investigative steps; human expertise remains important for context and complex cases. | Whether human analysts are available around the clock and what investigation and hunting work is included. |
| Response | Playbooks can automate known actions, subject to agreed rules of engagement; analysts may act or request customer approval. | Some actions may be executed automatically within customer-defined guardrails, while higher-impact actions remain approval-gated or analyst-led. | Who can isolate a device, disable an account, or block activity; what triggers approval; and whether actions are reversible. |
| Accountability | Provider and customer responsibilities are defined by contract and operating procedures. | Automation adds questions about policy, authority, oversight, and records, but does not itself settle responsibility. | Who owns decisions, escalation, incident communications, and post-incident review. |
This is a difference in degree and governance, not a clean divide between “human MDR” and “AI MDR.” A 2024 buyer’s guide treats automated resolution of known-good behavior, playbooks, detection engineering, reporting, service-level agreements (SLAs), threat hunting, and response under rules of engagement as baseline MDR capabilities. The CRITICALSTART buyer’s guide is a useful reminder that established providers already automate parts of the workflow.

What “AI-driven MDR” means in practice
There is no universal definition of “AI-driven MDR” established by the sources cited here. Treat the label as a prompt for a workflow-level explanation, not proof that one service is more capable than another. Ask a provider to identify which stages use AI, which use conventional automation, and where a human must review or approve an outcome.
- Detection engineering: Are models used to create or tune detections, or does the provider rely on analyst-authored rules?
- Enrichment and correlation: Does automation gather context from identity, endpoint, cloud, network, or other telemetry? Which integrations are supported?
- Triage and investigation: Does AI classify alerts, generate summaries, or propose investigative steps? What happens when evidence conflicts or confidence is low?
- Recommendations and execution: Does the system suggest actions, execute them under a playbook, or do both? Which actions require customer approval?
- Governance: What controls define the system’s authority? Are the inputs, decisions, approvals, and resulting actions recorded for review?
“Agentic” and “AI-native” are provider descriptions, not outcome measures. A useful evaluation asks for the actual task performed, the data used, the failure-handling process, and the customer’s ability to constrain or stop actions. It also distinguishes model-generated analysis from deterministic playbook automation: those methods can appear in the same service but have different failure modes and oversight needs.
Does AI replace MDR analysts?
AI can reduce repetitive work and help analysts handle a large queue, but the evidence does not support treating it as a wholesale replacement for people. Analysts remain important for ambiguous or high-impact incidents, contextual judgment, threat hunting, and coordination with the customer. The service still needs a clear owner for decisions and escalation, even where a system performs triage or response automatically.

IDC’s 2025 assessment for Asia/Pacific excluding Japan makes the distinction explicit: “Although GenAI and agentic AI are increasingly embedded into MDR workflows, human-led threat hunting, contextual analysis, and incident response expertise remain critical.” IDC’s regional MDR assessment also emphasizes measurable outcomes, the balance of automation and human expertise, regional alignment, and hybrid or multivendor integration. Its geographic scope is Asia/Pacific excluding Japan, so its regional guidance should not be treated as a universal market ranking.
Security teams should also separate analyst availability from automated response speed. A fast automated containment action does not establish that a provider has the right people available to investigate a complicated intrusion, explain business impact, or coordinate recovery. Ask who is on call, how escalation works, and what the service includes after an initial alert is contained.
What the published numbers do—and do not—show
Operational metrics can help frame provider questions, but figures published by different vendors are not a controlled comparison. Their definitions, data sets, customer environments, and measurement methods differ. Treat each number as a claim about the named provider and ask for its denominator, time period, exclusions, and relevance to your own workload.

| Source and date | Reported figure | How to interpret it |
|---|---|---|
| SANS Institute, 2025 Detection and Response Survey | 73% cited false positives as a top detection challenge; 59% cited a lack of skilled personnel as a top detection challenge; 56% cited skill gaps as a leading barrier to response. | Survey findings describe reported organizational challenges, not the performance of a particular MDR provider. |
| SANS Institute, 2025 Detection and Response Survey | 90% relied on automated tools for detection; 66% reported at least partial automated response, while 13% reported full automation. | These figures show automation was already part of many detection and response programs; they do not show that all respondents used the same tools or level of oversight. |
| SANS Institute, 2025 Detection and Response Survey | 76% planned to expand AI and machine-learning use in detection and response. | This is a reported plan, not evidence that the planned changes were completed or improved outcomes. |
| Sophos MDR service page, accessed 2026 | Sophos reports that 52% of cases are resolved end-to-end without human intervention and that the average time from alert to automated response is 89 seconds. | These are Sophos’s own service figures, not independently validated head-to-head benchmarks. The page’s metrics should not be generalized to other MDR services. |
| CrowdStrike announcement, February 13, 2025 | CrowdStrike reported more than 98% triage accuracy and over 40 hours of average weekly manual work eliminated. | CrowdStrike defines accuracy as agreement with expert decisions by its Falcon Complete MDR team. Its work-hour estimate assumes five minutes of triage per alert, and results vary with alert volume. |
The SANS figures illustrate why automation is attractive while also showing why it is not a complete answer: false positives and staffing constraints remain challenges even as automated tools are widely used. A service’s own claims may be useful as a starting point, but ask the provider to show how it measures false positives, missed detections, analyst workload, time to escalation, and customer outcomes in a way that can be compared across reporting periods.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteHow to compare MDR providers
Compare providers on the service they will deliver to your environment, not on whether their marketing uses “AI,” “agentic,” or “traditional.” Request concrete answers in writing and map them to your organization’s telemetry, incident policies, staffing, and regulatory obligations.
- Map telemetry and integrations. List the endpoint, identity, email, cloud, network, and other sources you need covered. Ask which are monitored, which are supported only through particular connectors, what data the service can access, and what gaps remain. Check whether the provider can work with your existing mix of vendors.
- Trace an alert from detection to closure. Ask the provider to walk through a representative case: how a signal is enriched and correlated, who investigates it, how the customer is contacted, and what evidence and records are delivered at closure. Have it distinguish AI-generated steps from rules and playbooks.
- Set action authority before an incident. Document which actions the provider can take independently, which require approval, and which are advisory only. Specifically address device isolation, account disabling, and blocking activity. Define confidence or severity thresholds, exceptions, approval channels, reversibility, and a way to pause automation.
- Check human coverage and escalation. Confirm whether qualified analysts are available 24/7, how the customer reaches them, what happens when the primary contact is unavailable, and how quickly the provider escalates a suspected incident. Ask who leads coordination when an incident affects business operations.
- Define the scope of response and investigation. Clarify whether the service includes proactive threat hunting, forensic analysis, incident-response support, recovery guidance, and post-incident reporting, or whether those are separate services. Ask what the provider will do outside the telemetry sources it directly monitors.
- Evaluate outcomes and SLAs. Request measurable commitments for acknowledgment, escalation, investigation updates, and reporting, with definitions and exclusions. Ask how the provider reports false positives, detection coverage, response actions, and service performance over time; do not accept a single speed or accuracy figure without its measurement method.
- Review auditability and control. Confirm that the customer can see alerts, evidence, decisions, approvals, and automated actions in an audit trail. Ask how long records are retained, which roles can change policies, and how configuration changes are reviewed.
- Validate regional and regulatory fit. Check where data is processed and stored, which languages are supported for service and incident communication, and whether the service aligns with your regulatory and contractual requirements. For organizations operating across regions, verify local escalation coverage and integration support rather than assuming one provider’s regional claims apply everywhere.
Ask for representative incident examples and customer references as well as service documentation. A provider should be able to explain not just what its automation handles, but where it stops, how it handles uncertainty, and how the customer can inspect what happened.

Examples of different service boundaries
Microsoft Defender Experts MDR
Microsoft’s documented service illustrates why coverage boundaries matter. Plan 1 covers Microsoft Defender workloads and includes analyst triage, investigation, threat hunting, and response action or guidance. Plan 2 adds selected non-Microsoft signals collected through Microsoft Sentinel, which is a prerequisite; for supported third-party products, Microsoft describes response guidance. The documentation states a 1,500-seat minimum for Plan 2 and advises customers to confirm availability with Microsoft. These are dynamic service terms, so verify the current scope and eligibility directly in Microsoft’s service documentation before making a purchasing decision.
Sophos MDR
Sophos describes its service as combining AI-driven detection technology with human security experts who monitor, investigate, and respond around the clock. The company says its analysts supervise AI and retain accountability, and reports more than 500 third-party integrations. Those are provider descriptions and claims, not a neutral industry definition or an independent integration audit. Its published automation figures are listed above with their attribution and limitations. See the Sophos MDR service page for its current description.
CrowdStrike Charlotte AI Detection Triage
CrowdStrike announced general availability of Charlotte AI Detection Triage in February 2025, describing customer-defined bounded autonomy and guardrails for triage and response workflows. This is an AI triage capability; it should not automatically be treated as a like-for-like comparison with an entire MDR service. When evaluating it or a similar capability, establish which service team provides monitoring and investigation, what workflows the capability can execute, and which controls belong to the customer. CrowdStrike’s announcement provides the company’s description and its attributed performance claims.

Common evaluation mistakes
- Assuming “traditional” means manual. MDR services commonly use detection engineering, automated handling of known behavior, and response playbooks. Ask what the provider automates today rather than inferring it from the label.
- Comparing unlike products and services. An EDR or XDR product can provide detection and response features without supplying the same analyst monitoring, investigation, and service coverage as MDR. Compare like-for-like scopes.
- Treating all AI claims as equivalent. An AI-generated alert summary, a triage decision, and autonomous containment are different capabilities with different risks. Ask which one is meant and what evidence supports the claim.
- Confusing speed with quality. A short alert-to-action time does not establish that the alert was correctly interpreted, that the action was appropriate, or that the incident was fully handled. Evaluate decision quality, escalation, auditability, and outcome measures together.
- Leaving response authority vague. “We respond on your behalf” is not enough to define who can disrupt a device or account. Translate service language into explicit permissions and approval rules before onboarding.
- Ignoring the environment behind a metric. Alert volumes, telemetry coverage, customer policy, and definitions affect reported performance. Request the method and scope behind any number before using it to forecast your own results.
Which model fits your security team?
A more automated MDR service may suit a team that needs help processing a high-volume alert queue, wants faster handling of well-understood cases, or lacks staffing for continuous monitoring—provided its guardrails match the organization’s risk tolerance. A provider emphasizing analyst-led investigation may be a better fit where contextual judgment, complex incidents, or direct human collaboration are the primary needs. Many services combine both approaches; the decision is about which tasks should be automated and where human judgment and customer control must remain.
Before selecting a service, write down the business impact of an incorrect containment action, the actions the provider may take without approval, the systems and regions it must cover, and the evidence your team needs after an incident. Then use those requirements to assess a provider’s workflow, contract, SLAs, integration list, and audit trail. The right choice is the one whose actual scope and controls fit those requirements—not the one with the most ambitious AI label.
