Andhra Pradesh Police are using AI-based crowd analysis, a command control centre and other technology to manage security during the 2026 Dasara Sharannavaratri festivities at the Sri Durga Malleswara Swamy temple on Indrakeeladri in Vijayawada. DGP Harish Kumar Gupta said the systems are helping officers identify likely rush points, request extra deployment, regulate traffic and respond to emergencies, but technology is being used alongside human supervision and police teams on the ground.
What the DGP announced
Gupta made the remarks while inspecting the police command control centre at Vijayawada’s Model Guest House. Deccan Chronicle reported and updated his comments on 14 October 2026, with the festivities scheduled to continue through 20 October.
“We are extensively using artificial intelligence in policing during this year’s Dasara festivities,” Gupta said. The inspection also covered arrangements for President Droupadi Murmu’s visit, including route maps, convoy management, public-meeting venues and locations where the President would stay.

How AI is being used to manage Dasara crowds
Movement and density analysis
AI-based crowd analysis assesses devotee movement and helps identify areas likely to experience heavy rush. This gives controllers an early indication of where crowd pressure may build instead of waiting for congestion to become an emergency.
Alerts for additional deployment
When analysis indicates that an area needs more supervision, the system alerts officers so that additional personnel can be sent there. Field officers still make the operational decision and carry out the response.
Command-centre coordination
A police command control centre monitors situations in different areas and supports coordination between teams. Technology inputs are used with on-site reports to regulate queues, coordinate traffic diversions and speed up emergency responses.

Why human supervision remains central
Gupta’s qualification is important: AI is not replacing police officers at the temple. He said technology alone is insufficient and must be combined with human supervision, effective deployment on the ground and coordination among government departments.
Algorithms can indicate a developing concentration of people, but officers must interpret the situation, account for barriers or changing routes, communicate with devotees and choose a safe intervention. Interdepartmental coordination is also necessary when a response involves traffic control, medical assistance, fire services or arrangements connected with the President’s visit.

These steps matter even when monitoring systems are active: crowd analysis can support decisions, but it cannot identify every individual who needs assistance or resolve confusion caused by visitors ignoring a route instruction.

The reported operation does not identify the AI or camera vendors, analytics models, command-centre equipment or traffic-management suppliers. It also does not state how long footage or derived data are retained, what privacy safeguards apply, how alerts are verified, or how the systems perform in different lighting and crowd conditions.
