AI data-center borrowing could put upward pressure on long-term interest rates by adding fixed-rate duration to bond and swap markets. A February 2026 analysis from the Federal Reserve Bank of Dallas identifies three possible channels: long-term corporate bonds, interest-rate swaps used alongside floating-rate private credit, and a potential reduction in bond issuance by financial firms that normally help offset duration supply. These are market mechanisms and estimates—not proof that AI financing alone sets Treasury yields.

How could AI debt affect the yield curve?

The yield curve plots interest rates across maturities. When investors must absorb more long-term interest-rate risk, they may demand higher yields as compensation. If that pressure falls more heavily on longer maturities than shorter ones, the curve can steepen. AI infrastructure investment may add that risk to markets both directly and synthetically.

Corporate bonds add duration directly

When a company issues a long-maturity, fixed-rate bond, investors take on exposure to interest rates over the life of the bond. More issuance can mean more duration for the market to absorb, potentially putting upward pressure on long-term yields at the margin.

The Dallas Fed’s February 2026 analysis said Wall Street estimates for AI-related investment-grade bond issuance in 2026 were centered on $300 billion. The analysis said that issuance could represent as much as $360 billion in ten-year equivalents—about one-eighth of Treasury duration supply. Those figures are estimates, not a record of completed 2026 issuance.

Pay-fixed swaps can add duration synthetically

Private-credit and other loans are often floating-rate. A borrower can use a pay-fixed interest-rate swap to exchange floating-rate payments for fixed-rate payments. That can make the borrower’s financing costs more predictable and leave the swap dealer or counterparty with the other side of the interest-rate exposure. In market terms, the swap can create synthetic duration supply even though no long-term corporate bond was issued.

Market-participant anecdotes cited by the Dallas Fed suggested pay-fixed swaps may have supplied as much as $50 billion or more in ten-year equivalents in 2025’s fourth quarter. This was an estimate based on market anecdotes, not a measured total. Swap-based supply also affects pricing differently from Treasury issuance: it can put pressure on swap yields relative to Treasury yields rather than adding Treasury securities to be absorbed.

Other issuers may offset less duration

The Dallas Fed also discusses a possible substitution effect. If AI companies issue more long-term debt while financial firms that typically hedge duration issue less, the market may lose some of the supply that would otherwise offset the added duration. This is a possible channel, not a claim that such offsetting issuance has already fallen by a known amount.

Will AI data-center borrowing push long-term interest rates higher?

It could contribute to higher long-term yields or a steeper curve, but the size of any effect is uncertain. The Dallas Fed’s analysis looks for evidence by comparing how the slope of the 10-to-30-year Treasury curve and long-term Treasury asset-swap spreads respond to term-premium measures. That is an inference from market behavior, not a clean causal estimate: many forces affect Treasury yields and swap spreads at once.

It is also important to distinguish the markets involved. Corporate bond issuance adds fixed-rate credit exposure; swaps alter exposure between counterparties; and Treasury issuance adds government securities. They can all affect the broader pricing of duration, but they are not interchangeable measures of Treasury supply.

How large is the AI financing wave—and what does it say about risk?

The International Monetary Fund’s April 2026 Global Financial Stability Report estimated $3.4 trillion in AI-related capital expenditure through 2029. The IMF also reported that hyperscalers had raised more than $100 billion in bond financing since January 2025. The first figure is a forward-looking spending estimate; the second describes bond financing reported by the IMF as of its April 2026 report.

These totals do not mean every AI-related project is financed in the same way or carries the same credit risk. The IMF said hyperscalers’ earnings growth had kept pace with capital expenditure and that their average credit quality and bond-market demand were strong, with financial-stability risks remaining contained at the time of the report. It also warned that future spending could pressure earnings and cash buffers, and that circular arrangements between companies can create additional channels for shocks to spread.

The European Central Bank’s May 2026 Financial Stability Review offered a mixed picture: spreads for riskier IT companies had widened more than broad bond spreads, indicating that markets were differentiating among borrowers, while business-debt growth remained low in both the United States and euro area. The ECB also reported a historical finding: 15% of years in its sample with particularly strong growth in both equity prices and business debt were followed by a financial crisis within two years. That historical statistic is context, not a forecast of an AI-driven crisis.

Why the financing structure matters as much as the headline debt total

A large, highly rated hyperscaler bond and a project-financed data-center obligation are not equivalent risks. The Bank of England’s July 2026 Financial Stability Report described expanding use of leveraged finance, structured finance, private credit, and off-balance-sheet structures. It highlighted debt-service sustainability, maturity mismatch, opacity, and the quality of leases and guarantees as important to the risk debt holders bear.

Financing channel How it can add duration What to examine
Long-term corporate bond Fixed-rate bonds put interest-rate exposure directly into investors’ portfolios. Issuer balance-sheet strength, credit rating, bond maturity, and refinancing schedule.
Floating-rate private credit or other loan with a pay-fixed swap The swap can turn floating-rate borrowing into fixed-rate exposure, adding duration synthetically and affecting swap-versus-Treasury pricing. Who bears the swap exposure, how the swap matches the loan’s term, and whether the borrower can service debt if earnings or cash buffers weaken.
Structured, leveraged, or off-balance-sheet project financing The duration effect depends on the debt and related contracts; the reports do not provide one comparable market-wide duration figure for this category. Debt-service capacity, maturity mismatch, transparency, and the enforceability and quality of lease cash flows, customer commitments, and guarantees.

What the evidence can—and cannot—tell investors

The mechanism is plausible, and the Dallas Fed’s estimates indicate why market participants are watching AI financing as a potential source of duration. But the figures combine estimates, market anecdotes, and observations from different reports and dates. They do not establish a single realized amount of AI-related duration, isolate its effect on Treasury yields, or show that AI borrowing is the only—or dominant—reason long-term rates move.

For a more grounded read, track actual issuance separately from estimates, distinguish corporate bonds from swaps and project debt, and consider the borrower’s credit quality and maturity structure. Keep the market conclusion narrow: AI financing may influence long-end yields and swap spreads at the margin, while the direction and size of rates still depend on many factors beyond AI.
