An AI content detector estimates whether text may have been generated or altered by AI. Its score or highlighted passages are signals about likely origin, not proof of who wrote the text, how it was produced, or whether someone broke a rule. Both false positives and false negatives are possible.
What an AI content detector does
A text detector looks for patterns it associates with AI-generated writing and returns an estimate, often as a score, label, or marked passages. The output depends on the particular system: there is no single detector design or universal meaning for a percentage.
For example, OpenAI described its former text classifier as a fine-tuned language model trained on pairs of human-written and AI-written text. Turnitin describes its AI Writing Report as an estimate about qualifying long-form prose that may be AI-generated or AI-altered. These descriptions apply to those systems, not every detector.

Can an AI detector prove someone used AI?
No. A detector result cannot establish authorship or misconduct on its own. A false positive occurs when human-written text is flagged as AI-generated; a false negative occurs when AI-generated or AI-altered text is not flagged. A score is therefore a reason to review the work, not a verdict.

- Long Battery Life & Portable Design – Built-in 800mAh rechargeable battery provides up to 25 hours of continuous use. Fully charges in just 1.5 hours via USB. Small enough to carry anywhere – weighs next to nothing, so you can take it on every trip.
OpenAI’s former classifier illustrates why its figures should not be treated as proof. In its 2023 English challenge-set evaluation, it correctly identified 26% of AI-written text as “likely AI-written” and incorrectly labeled 9% of human-written text as AI-written. OpenAI discontinued that classifier. These are results for that historical system and test set, not estimates of the accuracy of current detectors generally.
Why results vary
Performance depends on the text, the detector, and the conditions of the test. Sample length, language, writing format, predictable phrasing, and later edits can all affect a result. A tool’s published performance on one dataset, language, or model should not be assumed to apply to other writing or current systems.
Human writing can be misclassified. OpenAI’s educator guidance notes that its former classifier sometimes labeled human writing, including Shakespeare and the Declaration of Independence, as AI-generated. It also cautioned about possible disproportionate effects on some English learners and writers with concise or formulaic styles. As OpenAI put it, “ChatGPT has no ‘knowledge’ of what content could be AI-generated.”

What Turnitin’s report measures—and its limits
Turnitin’s product guide, accessed in 2026, says its AI Writing Report requires at least 300 words of prose in a long-form writing format, with a stated maximum of 30,000 words. The guide lists English, Spanish, Japanese, and Arabic as supported languages, and notes that features of the English detector are not available in the Spanish and Japanese detectors. These are product-specific conditions, not general requirements for AI detectors.
Turnitin says its AI percentage is separate from and independent of its similarity score. An AI-writing estimate is not a plagiarism result, and a similarity score does not establish whether text was generated by AI.
How to assess a detector or interpret a flag
When choosing or comparing a tool
- Check which languages and content formats it supports, and the minimum and maximum input lengths.
- Find out whether it distinguishes AI-only text from AI-altered text, and how it treats low scores.
- Look for transparent evaluation details: the data, test conditions, and measures used to report performance.
- Understand what human review and policy steps are expected before anyone acts on a result.
A 2023 Open Information Science study evaluated 16 publicly available AI text detectors using accuracy, decisiveness, false-positive, and false-negative measures. Its abstract reported high accuracy for three systems it evaluated. That finding is limited to those systems and study conditions; it does not establish how all detectors perform or how current tools handle new models and text.

When a result could affect a student
Do not use one detector score as the sole basis for an adverse decision. Turnitin’s guide warns that its model may misidentify human-written, AI-generated, and AI-paraphrased text, and advises against relying on the report alone. Review the work in context, consider relevant drafts or other evidence of the student’s process, apply human judgment, and follow the institution’s policy.

1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesAI detectors and watermarks are different
A detector estimates likely origin from patterns in text. A watermarking system instead embeds or looks for a statistical signal—for example, in word choices. Neither kind of signal establishes a person’s identity, ownership, factual accuracy, or the extent of human contribution. No detected watermark does not prove that text was written by a human.
In a preliminary 2026 evaluation of its textGrain watermark, OpenAI reported that, at a target false-positive rate of 1%, it detected the watermark in about 80% of 200-token passages and about 95% of 400-token passages for content such as psychology; detection rates were substantially lower for mathematics. In its 400-token evaluation, replacing 10% of words with synonyms reduced detection from about 92% to 66%, while replacing 25% reduced it to 17%. These are OpenAI-reported results for its watermarking approach, not a general benchmark for AI text detectors.
Can ChatGPT tell whether it wrote a passage?
No. OpenAI’s help article says ChatGPT has no knowledge of whether it generated a particular text and may make up an answer if asked. Its response should not be treated as an authorship check.
