AI coding tools can help developers produce code and may improve parts of the workday, but faster generation does not automatically mean faster releases, better software, or less burnout. Time saved writing can move into prompting, checking, testing, and review. Whether teams benefit depends on the work, their delivery practices, and what they mean by “productive.”
Does AI actually make software developers more productive?
It can, but “productivity” is not one result. A developer may finish a coding task sooner or feel less mental strain while the team’s release pace stays the same—or delivery becomes less stable. Surveys of perceived productivity, experiments measuring task time, and organization-level delivery metrics answer different questions.
DORA’s 2025 report summarizes responses from nearly 5,000 technology professionals worldwide, alongside more than 100 hours of qualitative data. It reports that 90% of technology professionals use AI at work and that more than 80% believe it has increased their productivity. Those figures describe adoption and respondents’ perceptions; they do not show that software reaches production faster.
DORA also calls AI an “amplifier”: “It magnifies the strengths of high-performing organizations and the dysfunctions of struggling ones.” That framing helps explain why the same tools can feel useful on a well-supported team and burdensome where testing, review, or priorities are already weak.

Why do studies reach different conclusions?
The results vary because the studies measure different outcomes in different settings. A reported improvement in developer experience is not a measured reduction in end-to-end delivery time, and an experiment on selected tasks does not establish what will happen across every team or codebase.
| Evidence | What it measured | What it found—and what it does not establish |
|---|---|---|
| METR randomized trial, 2025 preprint | Task completion time for 16 experienced developers completing 246 tasks on mature open-source projects, with early-2025 AI tools available | Participants took 19% longer when allowed to use AI. This is a bounded result for the study’s participants, tools, and tasks; the authors note that experimental artifacts cannot be entirely ruled out. |
| GitHub developer survey, published 2023 and updated 2024 | Respondents’ reported use and beliefs about AI coding tools | 92% of surveyed developers said they used AI coding tools at work. These are self-reports, not observed changes in delivery or code quality. |
| DORA generative-AI summary, updated April 13, 2026 | Associations between AI adoption and delivery measures | A 25% increase in AI adoption was associated with a 1.5% decrease in delivery throughput and a 7.2% decrease in delivery stability. These are reported associations, not randomized evidence that adoption caused either change. |
The METR result does not cancel out perceived benefits reported in surveys, and the survey findings do not refute the trial. The trial timed work on mature projects; surveys captured developers’ experiences and beliefs. DORA’s delivery measures describe organizational patterns rather than an individual’s speed on a particular task.

Does AI-generated code create more bugs?
The evidence summarized here does not establish a universal increase or decrease in bugs. Faster code generation alone cannot answer a quality question: generated changes still need to fit the existing system, pass tests, and withstand review. DORA’s reported decline in delivery stability is an association with adoption, not a direct count of bugs in AI-generated code or proof that AI caused incidents.

- Split-Key Ergonomic Design: One-piece split layout separates keys into left and right zones to reduce wrist bending and support a natural hand position, helping minimize strain during long hours of typing.
- Long Key Travel & Tactile Feedback: Extended key travel delivers responsive, tactile feedback with audible confirmation, similar to brown mechanical switches. Built for durability with up to 20 million keystrokes.
- Old-School Curved Row Design: Stepped, curved key rows promote a natural typing posture and reduce fatigue during long sessions. Made from high-quality ABS with membrane switches and 4.2 mm key travel.
- Ergonomic Curved Keycaps: Curved keycaps with flatter tops and back edges fit fingertip contours for improved comfort and control. Available in black, beige, and white color options.
- Natural Learning Curve: Ergonomic shape may require a short adjustment period. Most users adapt within 1–2 weeks and experience improved comfort and reduced wrist pressure with continued use.
Where does the time saved on writing go?
AI can reduce some of the effort involved in drafting code while adding work to other parts of the software development lifecycle (SDLC): describing the task to a model, checking its assumptions, correcting output, testing changes, and reviewing code. DORA’s March 2026 qualitative analysis describes auditing and reviewer cognitive load as recurring tensions.
That analysis examined 1,110 open-ended responses from Google software engineers collected in Q3 2025. It was a thematic analysis, and preceding survey questions may have primed respondents to discuss code generation. One anonymous respondent described the tradeoff this way: “I feel somewhat more productive, but it’s at a cost. While I end up spending less time writing code, I spend more time babysitting the AI and reviewing what it is trying to do.”

This does not mean review effort always rises by the same amount or that every AI-assisted change is harder to inspect. It does mean teams should track the work after generation, not count generated code or prompts as completed delivery.
Can AI coding make developers burn out?
It may help some people with parts of the work, but the available figures do not show that AI prevents burnout across the workforce. GitHub’s survey reports that 41% of developers believed AI coding tools could help prevent burnout. That is a respondent belief, not a clinical measure or a longitudinal finding that tool use reduced burnout.

DORA’s 2024 research presents a more conditional picture: it reports benefits for extensive AI users, while also linking unstable organizational priorities with burnout. The findings do not establish AI as a universal cause or cure. If time saved is converted into ever-higher output expectations, or if developers must absorb more review and verification without adequate capacity, the experience can worsen even when code generation feels easier.
GitHub’s developer-experience framing is relevant here: “the most important thing for developers isn’t story points or the speed of deployments. It’s the developer experience, which determines how efficiently and productively developers can exceed standards, enter a flow state, and drive impact.” It is a useful reminder that raw output is not a full account of sustainable work.

DORA’s 2024 and generative-AI research emphasizes the delivery practices that help teams manage the consequences of adoption. These are not a guarantee of success, but they give teams ways to constrain risk and see where work is accumulating.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →- Keep changes small. Small batches are easier to understand, test, review, and roll back than large generated change sets.
- Strengthen automated checks. Robust testing and continuous integration can catch problems before they reach production; they do not replace understanding what a change does.
- Protect review capacity. Use fast code review and monitor queue age and reviewer load so generation does not outpace inspection.
- Give fast feedback. Short feedback loops help developers discover misunderstandings or regressions before more work depends on them.
- Set clear acceptable-use policies. Make expectations for AI-assisted work explicit, including what needs verification and how sensitive information should be handled.
- Stabilize priorities and make room to learn. Dedicated work-time learning and stable priorities reduce the risk that adoption becomes another unmanaged demand on top of existing commitments.
Teams should evaluate AI against outcomes at more than one level: developer experience, time to complete representative tasks, review and rework burden, throughput, and delivery stability. A gain in one measure can coexist with a cost in another, so no single productivity number can tell the whole story.
What should a developer or engineering leader conclude?
AI-assisted development is neither inherently fast nor inherently fragile. It can make parts of a developer’s work easier, yet selected experiments, organizational delivery measures, and survey responses point to different outcomes because they capture different settings and questions. The sensible test is whether a particular workflow saves time after verification and review—and whether the team can absorb that work without weakening quality or making workloads unsustainable.
